ACE nominees

They sure cranked these out early this morning.  Thanks to N8 for posting in the comments section.  This year’s American Cinema Editors (ACE) nominees are:

Best Edited Feature Film (Dramatic)
“The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” (Angus Wall & Kirk Baxter)
“The Dark Knight” (Lee Smith, A.C.E.)
“Frost/Nixon” (Mike Hill, A.C.E. & Dan Hanley, A.C.E.)
“Milk” (Elliot Graham)
“Slumdog Millionaire” (Chris Dickens)

Best Edited Feature Film (Comedy or Musical)
“In Bruges” (Jon Gregory, A.C.E.)
“Mamma Mia!” (Leslie Walker)
“Tropic Thunder” (Greg Hayden)
“Vicky Cristina Barcelona” (Alisa Lepselter)
“WALL-E” (Stephen Schaffer)

Best Edited Documentary
“Bush’s War” (Steve Audette)
“Chicago 10” (Stuart Levy, A.C.E.)
“Man on Wire” (Jinx Godfrey)

No surprises whatsoever, really.  Except maybe some love for “In Bruges” and “Tropic Thunder” in the comedy category.  After a discussion earlier this morning about “the five” dominating the guild circuit so far, the dramatic nominees prove to solidify the mixture even more.  I don’t think we’ve ever seen a consensus like this develop, with five clear-cut industry favorites popping up everywhere like clockwork.

Benjamin Button, Slumdog, Milk, Dark knight and F/N again. I have a bad feeling that race is over, we know nominees. Final five is going to look like this.

Jeez, the way the same five titles keep getting listed over and over again seems to me a virtual admission of what a weak year it’s been.

Still, it’s nice to see at least one guild acknowledging that animated and live action films can actually mix.

It’d be great if Frost/Nixon or Curious Case of Benjamin Button could be replaced by Wall-E or In Bruges at the Oscars. That would be much more exciting.

Is everyone just on autopilot? Here’s hoping for a surprise come Jan 22nd cause if this is indeed the lineup, I don’t know how I’ll muster any excitement for the BP award.

At least the acting races have us guessing…

I mad as hell and I’m not going to take this anymore! One (or Two) of the five needs to die.

Is it just me or is ‘Wall-E’ far from a comedy?

Hmm, Wall-E makes it in here, and was ineligible for WGA and DGA, so it’s hardly out of this thing.

I still feel surprises coming on…. Just feel it. It can’t just be these five.

Rob: Pixar movies always make it in with ACE. So it isn’t THAT telling, but obviously, the film is still in the hunt.

I can’t think of F/N as anything other than a Frank Langella showcase. Every other element about the movie was just okay, nothing spectacular. All this guild love is just baffling. Still, I don’t see it getting in for BP with the WALL-E love that’s been happening all year.

I love how wild card Wall-E is. Whenever it’s not ineligible, it does the business.

I will squeal with delight if it makes into the final five.

Is there a relative percentage breakdown of Academy of Arts and Sciences members? I’m just curious…’cause at this point, unless the actors’ branch (who I imagine are the largest by a fair margin) gives Doubt a big push, it won’t make the Best Picture shortlist. Hopefully even they can recognize that the actors carry that show, not the director. The same could be said of Frost/Nixon, but I felt they opened that up a bit more from the stage version. Pretty much all of the theatrical symbolism of Doubt came across heavy-handed in the screen version.

So disappointing that such an unworthy film, Benjamin Button, is nominated for best editing. That ending sequence when Brad Pitt starts talking about what “some people” do is one of the sloppiest transitions from one scene to another that I can recall and that alone should automatically disqualify it from any editing recognition.
