Tribute to Michael Kahn

Posted by · 5:46 pm · February 21st, 2011

I wasn’t able to make it to the ACE Eddies this weekend, and the main reason I was bummed about that, if I’m honest, was a tribute to editing legend Michael Kahn.  The tribute reel really hit the right spot and now it’s available to watch.  Check it out below and relive the magic.

‘Social,’ ‘Alice’ win ACE awards

Posted by · 9:31 pm · February 19th, 2011

Alright, so I should have gone with what I said was the safe bet for the ACE drama Eddie.  Rather than making history by awarding a film not nominated for the editing Oscar and giving it to the truly deserving contender, “Inception,” the editors decided to rethink it and go with “The Social Network” instead.  […]

Predict the weekend in societies

Posted by · 6:00 pm · February 17th, 2011

Anne and I will be briefly previewing the American Cinema Editors and Cinema Audio Society awards in tomorrow’s Oscar Talk, and maybe a little Motion Picture Sound Editors thrown in to boot.  All three will be announcing winners this weekend, while members of the Costume Designers Guild will put a bow on the guild season […]

WEEKLY WRAP: Guilds galore and season fatigue

Posted by · 7:13 pm · January 14th, 2011

• The Directors’ Guild of America presented few surprises in their award nominations, though some raised eyebrows at “True Grit”‘s omission. (Their documentary nods didn’t move the needle either.) • The American Cinema Editors’ nods matched those of the directors; the American Society of Cinematographers didn’t deviate much from the formula either. • This week’s […]

ACE springs for Best Picture frontrunners

Posted by · 5:50 am · January 14th, 2011

Guy rightly noted yesterday a seemingly “whatever” coagulation of the guild awards circuit into “easy-to-recall season staples.” If you were hoping the American Cinema Editors (ACE) would put an end to that, keep dreaming. Of course, ACE historically skews as populist and inside-the-box as the DGA set, which is why the two are often coupled […]

‘Hurt Locker,’ ‘Hangover’ win with ACE

Posted by · 10:08 pm · February 14th, 2010

Friday we spotlighted the film editing category in our daily Oscar Guide feature.  Tonight at the Beverly Hilton, the editors themselves had their say at the 60th annual ACE Eddies ceremony. Bob Murawski and Chris Innis were the big winners in the drama category for “The Hurt Locker” (my prediction for the Oscar win), while […]

WEEKLY WRAP: BFCA awards, Guilds triple, Rohmer passes

Posted by · 5:47 am · January 16th, 2010

• As you’ve just heard, “The Hurt Locker” emerged triumphant at the BFCA Critics’ Choice Awards. • Earlier this week, Éric Rohmer, sly giant of New Wave intellectualism, passed away at the age of 89. • That same day, “Avatar,” “The Hangover” and “Star Trek” were among the films nominated by the WGA. • The […]

Welcome to Oscar Talk, a weekly kudocast between yours truly and Anne Thompson of Thompson on Hollywood. ACE: “AVID FTW”

Posted by · 4:02 pm · July 3rd, 2009

Sorry, I couldn’t resist the anagram train on that headline, but this David Cohen story at Variety is interesting for us cinema tech hounds.  It seems the American Cinema Editors will be dishing out the first ever ACE Technical Excellence Award to Avid’s Media Composer software, amounting to”an unprecedented endorsement of a commercial product,” Cohen […]

‘Slumdog,’ ‘WALL-E,’ ‘Wire’ win big at the Eddies

Posted by · 9:32 pm · February 15th, 2009

UPDATED: Alright, back from the show and it seems “Slumdog” also predictably won the ASC award, which brings me to a possibility that has come up in a number of conversations recently: could the film sweep all its Oscar categories in one week’s time?  It is the film of the year and truthfully, there seems […]

‘Man on Wire’ wins Doc Eddie

Posted by · 7:57 pm · February 15th, 2009

The year’s most talked about documentary just beat out “Chicago 10” and “Bush’s War” here at The Beverly Hilton’s Crystal Ballroom in the second award of the evening. Sadly, editor Jinx Godfrey wasn’t here to accept the trophy, but she sent along her assistant to handle things. More to come…

‘Slumdog’ tonight, too?

Posted by · 11:27 am · February 15th, 2009

In addition to the ADG award “Slumdog Millionaire” took yesterday, the Cinema Audio Society also bestowed it with their award in something of a surprise (I’d say).  I usually go to that ceremony, but with it being Valentine’s Day, other duties beckoned. I will, however, be at tonight’s ACE Eddies ceremony, so look for a […]

WEEKLY WRAP: Globe surprises, best shots, BAFTA nods

Posted by · 6:00 pm · January 16th, 2009

Sorry the Weekly Wrap feature has been M.I.A. these past few weeks — between the holidays and various disasters, they got a bit forgotten. Anyway, it’s back this week, and what a busy week it was: • In a new annual institution at IC, Kris reviewed the top 10 shots of the year here … […]

Gimme five

Posted by · 2:34 am · January 13th, 2009

I was contemplating writing a post bemoaning the stultifying consensus that has been reached in the assorted guild nomination lists this past week. But now Nathaniel Rogers, tack-sharp as ever in his assessment of yesterday’s ACE nods, has spared me the trouble by saying everything I needed to say: I’m so confused right now. I […]
