No explanations, just my annual unfiltered, edge-of-my-seat anticipations. My tastes tend to skew entertainment from afar; I don’t look forward to the Oscar stuff until later in the year, when the pieces of that crazy puzzle are slowly revealed.
Here’s what I’m looking forward to:
1. “Watchmen” (Zack Snyder, Warner Bros. Pictures, March 6)
2. “Public Enemies” (Michael Mann, Universal Pictures, July 1)
3. “Avatar” (James Cameron, 20th Century Fox, Dec. 18)
4. “A Christmas Carol” (Robert Zemeckis, Walt Disney Pictures, Nov. 5)
5. “Terminator Salvation” (McG, Warner Bros. Pictures, May 22)
6. “Shutter Island” (Martin Scorsese, Warner Bros. Pictures, Oct. 2)
7. “Green Zone” (Paul Greengrass, Universal Pictures, TBA)
8. “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” (Gavin Hood, 20th Century Fox, May 1)
9. “State of Play” (Kevin Macdonald, Universal Pictures, April 17)
10. “2012” (Roland Emmerich, Columbia Pictures, July 10)
Least anticipated: “Inglorious Bastards”

Kris, wtf with the less anticipated? dont be a tarantino hater :) lol, what do you think of Pulp Fiction?: My most anticipated top 5 are:
1. Watchmen & Inglorious Bastards
2. Public Enemies
3. Shutter Island
4. Terminator Salvation
5. X-Men Origins: Wolverine
Why is Inglourious Basterds the least anticipated? I’m really looking forward to seeing it.
I’m also looking forward to NINE, the musical adaptation by Rob Marshall with Daniel Day-Lewis, Marion Cotillard, Nicole Kidman, Kate Hudson, Judi Dench, Penelope Cruz, Fergie, and SOPHIA LOREN.
Doesn’t that come out in 2009 as well? I think so…
not a Tarantino fan?
Where is the Public Enemies teaser/trailer? It opens in July and we don’t have anything yet! Has anyone heard what it will be attached to?
Damn I totally forgot about Green Zone. What happened there? We haven’t even seen new still since last year!

Least Anticapated: X-Men Origins: Wolverine looks worst than X-Men 3: The Last Stand, and 2012 anything that has Roland Emmerich directing it I’ll skip it.
1. The Lovely Bones
2. Public Enemies
3. Shutter Island
4. Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince
5. Terminator Salvation
6. Sherlock Holmes

“Broken Embraces” is my most anticipated, by a mile. “Shutter Island” and “Mammoth” follow — the Michelle Williams connection is coincidental, but handy.
I havent really been studying the year as much as i should be.
1.Inglorious Bastards
2.Watchmen
3.Shutter Island
4.The Road
5. NINE
Well, obviously we have a fundamental disagreement about our #1 choice, Kristopher, but the Inglorious Basterds script was, in my opinion, fabulous.
1. Inglorious Basterds (Tarantino)
2. Watchmen (Snyder)
3. Avatar (Cameron)
4. Funny People (Apatow)
5. Sherlock Holmes (Ritchie)
6. Public Enemies (Mann)
7. The Road (Hillcoat)
8. A Christmas Carol (Zemeckis)
9. The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus (Gilliam)
10. Star Trek (Abrams)
If ‘Tree of Life’ does come out in ’09, that’s my number one. Looking forward to ‘Inglorious Basterds’ as well.
The Lovely Bones is another one of those films that seems to have been MIA. Already feels like it wrapped 1,5 years ago at least.
Star Trek is probably the most vital release for me as a Trekkie this year. Everything depends on it ;).
Kris, any news/thoughts on the legal ramblings between Warners and Fox about the distribution of Watchmen?
I’m most looking forward to Amelia.
And I’ve heard from a good source–to my great disappointment–that Shutter Island is merely mediocre.
Most anticipated films:
1. Nine (Day-Lewis, Cotillard, Cruz and Loren!!)
2. Agora (Rachel Weisz and Alejandro Amenabar)
3. The Road
4. Broken Embraces
5. Green Zone
6. The Countess (Julie Delpy)
7. The Vintner’s Luck (The novel is great)
8. Taking Woodstock
9. The Lovely Bones
10.Shutter Island
Especial Mention: Veronika Decides to Die (I saw the trailer and looks great and I love Sarah Michelle Gellar ;))
I know my tastes skew more away from popcorn flicks than most but I just don’t get the Watchmen love.
Even if your 10 were the only films coming out this year I’m not sure it would make my top five.
1.Public Enemies
2.Sherlock Holmes
3.terminator:salvation
4.the imaginarium of dr. parnassus
5.wolverine
6.wolfman
7.avatar
does this mean they moved halo back? i thought that was in 2009. i know they moved hobbit to 2010 though. and the lincoln movie, is that still 2009?
i looked up agora, that’s the only “awards” film i was aware of. great story for a movie, horrible title for that story!
now thanks to your list i really want to see public enemies.
spot on for least anticipated.
is public enemies really rated g?
sorry i was looking at flixster, i should have known
The Road
Tree of Life
The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus
HALO won’t be made due to a lack of investors.
Here’s another hotly anticipated title:
Lesbian Vampire Killers. Could be the best Tarantino film he never made.
01. Where the Wild Things Are (Jonze)
02. The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (Gilliam)
03. Public Enemies (Mann)
04. The Illuisonist (Chomet)
05. Avatar (Cameron)
06. The Road (Hillcoat)
07. Shutter Island (Scorsese)
08. Away We Go (Mendes)
09. The Turin Horse (Tarr)
10. Big Fan (Siegel)
I’m also looking forward to Up, Cold Souls, Mary and Max, King Shot, The Fantastic Mr. Fox, Ondine, A Serious Man, Bruno, and The Boat That Rocked.
Oh, and if I could pin the films I’m anticipating the least:
Watchmen
Nine
2012
Anything statting Mikey Myers, Eddie Murphy, or Will Ferrell
And anything starring Seth Rogan, Michael Cera, or Jonah Hill.
Three of the least funny people in show business.
10. The Lovely Bones (Peter Jackson)
9. Biutiful (Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu)
8. A Serious Man (Coen Brothers)
7. The Box (Richard Kelly)
6. Inglorious Bastards (Quentin Tarantino)
5. Where the Wild Things Are (Spike Jonze)
4. Tetro (Francis Ford Coppola)
3. Public Enemies (Michael Mann)
2. Shutter Island (Martin Scorsese)
And without a doubt, my most anticipated is…
1. TREE OF LIFE (TERRENCE MALICK)
Also really looking forward to Soderbergh’s Informant and Girlfriend Experience, Green Zone, Broken Embraces, Avatar, Mendes’ Away We Go, Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr. Fox, and Watchmen
I agree with the lack of enthusiasm about the next Tarantino’s movies. His last ones were straightly awful.
The most anticipated is ‘The tree of life’. Malick is other dimension.
And besides A serious man, Away we go or Shutter island.
I’m spanish but i don´t expect anything about what Almodovar or Amenabar make. They’re overrated.
1- Shutter Island
2- The Road
3- Public Enemies
4- Nine
5- Tree of Life
6- The Informant (Surprised no one’s mentioned it)
7- Green Zone
8- Up
9- The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus
10- Biutiful
Most Anticipated:
1. Whatever Works (Woody Allen)
2. Broken Embraces (Pedro Almodóvar)
3. Shutter Island (Martin Scorsese)
4. A Serious Man (Coen Bros.)
5. Tree of Life (Terrence Malick)
6. Tetro (Francis Ford Coppola)
7. Were the Wild Things Are (Spike Jonze)
8. Public Enemies (Michael Mann)
9. The Road (John Hillcoat)
10. Nine (Rob Marshall)
Also looking forward to anything by Soderbergh, Greengrass, Iñarritu, Gilliam…
Least Anticipated:
The Clint Eastwood film or films…
AND
The Hillary Swank film.
…really Kris, 2012? There’s no possible way that film cannot be god awful. I read the script after watching 10000 BC, and my rating for the former shot up half a point. Trash.
1. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (Edgar Wright)
2. Nine (Rob Marshall)
3. Brief Interviews With Hideous Men (John Krasinski)
4. Blood Meridian (Todd Field)
5. Moon (Duncan Jones)
6. Life During Wartime (Todd Solondz)
7. Watchmen (Zack Snyder)
8. The Lovely Bones (Peter Jackson)
9. Pierre Pierre (Jason Reitman)
10. Whatever Works (Woody Allen)
As you know, I don’t get anyone’s love for superhero movies—they are SOOOOO boring. But we won’t go there. You know this about me already.
I pretty much agree with AVERAGE JOE. I haven’t studied the upcoming list of 2009 releases too much, as I try and divorce myself from studio hype. But I’d go with
10. The Girlfriend Experience (Soderburgh)
9. A Serious Man (Coen Brothers)
8. The Fantastic Mr. Fox (W. Anderson)
7. The Box (Richard Kelly)
6. Inglorious Bastards (Tarantino)
5. Where the Wild Things Are (Jonze)
3. Green Zone (Greengrass)
2. Shutter Island (Scorsese)
1. (tie) Tree of Life (Malick) and Lincoln (Spielberg)
ALSO: Public Enemies (Mann), Chicago 7, Nine (Marshall), Coraline (Selick), The Boat That Rocked (Curtis), Funny People (Apatow), Bad Lieutenant–Port of Call New Orleans (Herzog), The Road (Hillcoat), Amelia (Nair), and–for popcorn munching–Star Trek (Abrams) and even 2012 (even though Roland Emmerich is one of the worst filmmakers ever).
What about “UP” from Pixar??
Also, Public Enemies, though I haven’t really been impressed with Mann’s most recent output.
I don’t get the Watchmen love either…I think that’s one strictly for the fan boys (though Synder is definitely the right one for the job).
Sorry…Snyder…
I don’t think Blood Meridian is going to make 09, Zach.
1. “Green Zone” (Paul Greengrass)
2. “Shutter Island” (Martin Scorsese)
3. “Up” (Pete Docter and Bob Peterson)
4. “Public Enemies” (Michael Mann)
5. “Inglorious Bastards” (Quentin Tarantino)
6. “Avatar” (James Cameron)
7. “The Lovely Bones” (Peter Jackson)
8. “The Road” (John Hillcoat)
9. “Nine” (Rob Marshall)
10. “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” (David Yates)
Mine has to be NINE, nothing more.
So what do you think will be the Slumdog Millionaire of 2009/2010 season?
Looks like most people here forgot “Up.” Oops. You won’t be forgetting it when it lands next May and knocks the shit out of everyone again, PIXAR style.
I’m pretty amped up for “Ponyo on a Cliff” and “Nine”.
I reckon that the Best Picture will go to….
THE BURNING PLAIN
with the lovely….
CHARLIZE THERON and …
KIM BASINGER
up for Best Leading Actress and Best Supporting Actress respectively.
So MARK MY WORDS!
I’m looking forward to:
“The Lovely Bones”
“The Tree of Life”
“The Private Lives of Pippa Lee”
“Mammoth”
“A Serious Man”
“Broken Embraces”
“The Road”
“The Countess”
“Agora”
“Julie & Julia”
“Dirt Music” (if it comes out)
“Cheri”
“Ponyo on a Cliff”
In my eyes, listing 2012 as one of your most anticipated and Inglorious Basterds (that’s the correct spelling) as least anticipated is just plain crazy talk.
That said:
Tree of Life
Ponyo on a Cliff
Shutter Island
A Serious Man
The Road
The Lovely Bones
Nine
Up
Public Enemies
Inglorious Basterds
Green Zone
Harry Potter
Terminator
Avatar
I wasn’t too pleased with the State of Play trailer, otherwise I’d have that up as well.
Public Enemies
Shutter Island
Green Zone
Transformers 2
The Road
Inglorious Bastards
