‘Rachel,’ ‘The Wrestler’ were close; Cruz, Hawkins sit pretty

Mickey Rourke in The WrestlerAs I suspected, “Rachel Getting Married” and “The Wrestler” were right in the thick of today’s NYFCC voting.  As he does annually, Tom O’Neil runs down the inside scoop on the particulars of the vote.  He gets his info from the New York Post’s Lou Lumenick.

Apparently “Rachel” was nipping at the heels of “Milk” for Best Picture, while Mickey Rourke came in a relatively close second for Best Actor honors in “The Wrestler.”   Robert Seigel’s script for the latter was also in the conversation, landing in third place.  It’s nice to see Kate Winslet was also in the running for Best Actress (for “Revolutionary Road”), albeit in fourth place.

The only mentions for “The Dark Knight” were a second place showing for Heath Ledger and a third place showing for Best Cinematography, while the only landslide win looks to have been “Man on Wire” for Best Documentary, 20 points ahead of “Waltz with Bashir.”

Entertainment Weekly’s Dave Karger, meanwhile, shrewdly points out that “in the last seven years, 11 actors have been recognized by both organizations (LAFCA and NYFCC) and all 11 eleven went on to score Oscar nominations as well.”  The peculiarity bodes well for Penelope Cruz and Sally Hawkins, Karger says, and I’m inclined to agree.

I have a lingering hunch that The Wrestler is gonna end up on the top 5 with Slumdog, Milk and Button. And the final spot belongs to The Dark Knight.

“The only mention for “The Dark Knight” is a third place showing for Best Cinematography”

What you talkin’ ’bout, Kris? Ledger was second for supporting actor (and only seven points short of Brolin).

Again, Happy Go Lucky, overrated and Hawkins will be lucky if she even gets an Oscar nomination.

Leaving Las Vegas won in LA and NY and didnt score a BP nomination. Cruz is a lock, but Hawkins is far from being a lock. She will get a GG comedy nod (very weak this year), but we will see if she gets a nod in SAG.

Paulo: The point isn’t the films, it’s the performances, which have a perfect track record when landing wins with both groups as of late…as Karger points out. Hawkins is looking great.

Glad Ben Button at least got 3rd in some categories…

Wish I could get into the Variety screening tomorrow night in NYC – I am dying to check it out.

I’m wondering if Benjamin Button, and Revolutionary Road will play better with the Academy then they have so far with these other awards groups. Surely, they are two of the more ambitious undertakings of this movie year, and the Oscars always seem to adore the more epic, sprawling films. But, they aren’t getting much love so far. Is it that they are just both emotionally distant?? Because they seem to have everything else in the world going for them.

Kris, the Best Actress, Drama category looks especially exciting. However, I was so sad to see Cate Blanchett left out; I was for sure she would be in. Do you think she will still make the list for the Best Actress Oscar, or do you think Angelina Jolie and Sally Hawkins have a better shot?

And the Oscar goes to…(for supporting actress)…Penelope Cruz.
