Clint Eastwood growls through the opening of Best Original Song contender

Gran TorinoI like Clint.  I really do.  I’m sticking up for him against all this timidity regarding his “cranky old guy” performance in “Gran Torino” because I know the role is something special.  Despite considering his recent string of success to be the most overrated era of any filmmaker’s career, I’m glad he’s out there making movies.  In the face of sudden disgust with his latest film, “Changeling,” I went to bat for him and even thought it to be his best work in quite a while.

Basically, I’m no Clint basher.  But even I have to stop and wonder why the hell he’s singing in the opening verse of this Best Original Song contender for “Gran Torino.”  Suddenly I have the ole’ Adam Sandler sketch in my head: “There all gonna laugh at you!”

Have a listen…if you dare (apologies for the crude recording…had to do it manually and I’m knee deep in holiday packing):

I take back everything bad I said about Eastwood. He is an antagonistic performance art genius. Move over Andy Kaufman.

And we discover yet another of Clint’s endless lists of talents: impersonating Bob Dylan.
    Brilliant song btw, beautiful.

Oh, and we have yet another winner.

Down to earth is the winner…(Wall-E)

Well, he’s no worse than he was singing in “Paint Your Wagon.” (Not that that’s any kind of achievement.)

C’mon, Clint. We respect your versatility. But it doesn’t hurt to delegate once in a while.

The trailer made Gran Torino look like a comedy and I think this proved it.

I’ve said it before, but I thought we would be spared of having to hear Clint “sing” after Flags of our Fathers. Unfortunately, I was wrong. I love him as a director, but he needs to maybe stay away from the music in his films. I liked Changeling a lot, but the score was both repetitive and intrusive.

I really hope this doesn’t beat Bruce’s song from The Wrestler. I can appreciate the attempt and love Clint as much as anyone else, but holy hell was that singing ever bad.

Yeah I love Eastwood as an actor and director…but this is just bad.

I didn’t think it was that bad. it sounded pretty sad, and i’m sure it will sound better when it is played in the movie, that way it makes more sense

I feel like a hypocrite for laughing at this but loving Tom Waits.

Love Clint……however…..when he is “acting” he uses a low whispering, raspy, gravely voice…….as opposed to his normal speaking voice.

It was a distraction in both Million Dollar Baby & Gran Torino.

Kris, you obviously don’t like Eastwood… You just don’t hate him like many of your readers.

I’m going to be be very frank: I think most of you are just pop-art-lovers that don’t appreciate films and other pieces of art made in a more classic form. I bet that, if we were in the 30s, 40s or 50s, you would say that John Ford was just a regular filmmaker, and would hail many “artistis” whose name nobody would remember just 20 years after.

I really think this is true…
