Okay, it’s The Sun. I know. But a fun rumor nonetheless. Here’s the juicy aside, via Lumenick On Film:
George is very keen — he’s been trying to do a movie with Johnny for a long time. He thinks they’ll make the perfect on-screen partnership.
Well, personally, I would find it difficult not to laugh hysterically if this came to pass. I don’t want to say I’d hate it, because let’s face it, a Clooney/Depp team-up would be fun. And a movie with their names above the title would make boatloads of money — BOATLOADS. And maybe that’s the ultimate edict of Disney, steering more and more toward the tent pole route like Warner Bros. up the street.
Anyway, here’s Lumenick’s opinion:
…it sounds like a truly terrible idea to me. The 75-year-old radio character’s last iteration was in 1981, when Michael Horse played Tonto in one of that decade’s worst movies, “The Legend of the Lone Ranger.” The title role was the first and last film appearance of Klinton Spilsbury, who won Razzies for worst actor and worst newcomer. Let’s just pray Hollywood is celebrating April 1 a few months early.
There’s also a bit about the Russell Crowe dual “nottingham” casting that was reported over the weekend and, to my mind, remains a bizarre idea to say the least.

This sounds like an INCREDIBLE idea to me. Take two of the best actors out there — Depp and Clooney — and combine them with the showmanship of Jerry Bruckheimer who would then pony up a massive budget of at least $150 million on an epic Western adventure. Who doesn’t want to see that?
Now, if Gore Verbinski actually directs it, as it was initially reported last year when it was announced that Bruck was bringing the franchise back, that will really be the icing on the cake. After his work on the Pirates trilogy, I will follow him anywhere. Come to think of it, I’ve enjoyed all of Verbinski’s efforts thus far.
And if Gore is too busy, here’s another idea for the director’s chair:
Tony Scott — he’s ALWAYS wanted to do an epic-sized Western, and while his dream film is of a more serious nature (Tom Mix & Pancho Villa), he’d get to hop back in the saddle with Bruck and flex his Western action-chops.
And also, if Ridley Scott actually gets around to tackling a new Robin Hood flick, I could only hope that he’d do something radical and different with the material. Who needs another Prince of Thieves? I know I sure don’t. A filmmaker like Scott should be given the money to do whatever he damn well pleases. Nobody does epic like him. And with Crowe in the lead, this is a sure-fire hit. At least with me.
Yeah, but Crowe as the Sheriff AND as Robin Hood?
[…] There are a few ideas kicking around the ole noggin today for Cinematically Correct. One, where did InContention.com get the idea today of sticking a mask on a picture of Clooney? I wonder […]
maybe he’s the sherrif and then he BECOMES robin hood…
I think this movie will be in the vein of the PotC franchise. A whole lot of fun like the genre hasn’t had in over a decade. Though I am not too keen on Clooney though.
Leave it to Sir Ridley to reinvent something like the Robin Hood mythos. The sherriff and Robin being the same person is a nice idea and a fresh take. Combined with his gritty realism it should make one hell of a film.
Fairly certain Scott was joking.
I’d rather see Crowe in the role of Friar Tuck…
[…] Which brings me to this impressive rendering of the “Smoke Jumpers” poster from the guys at ibored. Impressive to me, anyway. We’ve seen the height of my Photoshop prowess. […]
