Yeah, consider the source: the National Enquirer. But apparently these two names are swirling around the casting debate for the sequel to the box office shattering “Dark Knight.”
(Actually…there’s no source on the Depp bit.)
Thanks to reader Ronn for passing in the information. You all know my Bat allegiance, so I’ll use just about any nugget as an excuse to spout off at the mouth on this subject. Personally, I’m not big on either of these choices, though Hoffman could put a certain bent on Oswald Cobblepott that would be interesting. His name has always been in the cards, though.
The point is, these types of rumors go crazy right around this time: post release of a successful film that’s bound to have another installment on the way. Last time it was Crispin Glover and Jude Law as potential candidates for the role of the Joker (with the former actively campaigning for the part). Then Christopher Nolan surprised us all with an out-of-the-box, unanticipated name and voila: potential Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
My thoughts on casting the rest of the series are already on the record, but here’s two more names, grist for the mill, do with it what you will.
Thanks again to Ronn.

i must be getting old – my first thought was dustin hoffman??
Nolan seems to stray away from using the big movie stars, so Toby Jones as Penguin? Michael Sheen as Riddler?
I really think the Penguin should he handed over to Phillip Seymour Hoffman.
The Riddler should be a character who seems flawless and is a great man in the Gotham public’s eye but is a villain behind the scenes; a great contrast to the reckless vigilante the people of Gotham will now surely hate. This way when Batman has to try to stop him, the public hates Batman even more, so he has to overcome his outcast status to defeat this villain.
As far as casting for this role, the Riddler can’t be too much like the Joker so he needs to be reserved but with that potential to just blow at any minute, an eloquent, sophisticated looking and sounding villain. Ewan McGregor, or Paul Giamatti would be pretty good I think, or a little more out there but suited pretty well for the role would be John Cusack.
I don’t really care about any of the other villain options…I don’t think Catwoman fits in Nolan’s world very well but they’ve done some remarkable things so if anyone can convince me it’s them.
Hmm, I totally forgot about the recent Catwoman movie debacle when thinking about upcoming villain(es). Does anyone else think it might rule the character out because of that?
Anyhow, like I said earlier, Depp is too big of a star and a factor. It goes totally against the nature of Nolan to cast him.
I think about Ben Kingsley playing Mr. Freeze, and I get tingles. (God help me if they base the storyline on “Heart of Ice” from the animated series.)
Personally, I’m not a big fan of introducing Robin into the series, but then someone suggested Joseph Gordon-Levitt and… that’s actually kind of intriguing.
One problem with all this name-guessing is when they do announce a new actor for the film someone, somewhere might’ve actually been right somewhere, sometime. That person will probably be Poland or Wells. Scary huh?
depp and hoffman would make an excelent choice. who ever thinks differnt is an idiot
robin is gay. DONT BRING HIM IN!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ROBIN IS A LITTLE GIRL
I LIKE HARRY POTTER
@ Benjamin James Taylor: I kinda agree with your first post, but the others… Um, WTF?
@ parker: Well, Dustin Lee Hoffman was the first choice to play The Penguin in Batman Returns. (BTW; does anyone know why he didn’t get that part? I’m not saying Danny DeVito didn’t do a good job ’cause he did, obviously, but I still wanna know.)
