David Poland dings ‘Dark Knight’

Slightly.  Here’s a taste:

I wanted that movie that Nolan was chasing. I really wanted that movie. But as is the nature of the dramatic arts, there is a mystical and undeniable gut feeling when you know that even the best film has come to its natural end. And in The Dark Knight, this occurs more than half an hour before the picture actually ends… maybe an hour…

But he makes a mistake positing that Nolan would ever offer a “director’s cut.”  The director has infamously debunked such ideas, making it clear that his definitive vision of a film is what is on the screen.

I think this is the first time I’ve ever read a review making the case that a 2.30+ movie should’ve been longer.

Yeah I know, right. I still wouldn’t call this a “negative” review, he says he liked it.

He calls it “terrific”, in fact.

It’s odd that, right now, the worst criticisms of the movie are that it’s “great”, “terrific” or another synonym for high quality, but that it’s not quite a masterpiece.

    Sounds special to me.

Very interesting point of view. I’ve been a little skeptical of all the glowing ones, always preferring those who admitted that it was flawed. It’s based on a comic book character who dresses up as a bat – how can it be the Best Movie Ever? I quite liked his perspective.

kris, I don’t call it a “negative” review, this is a very positive review… In fact, even with a few points of criticisms, “The Dark Knight” has a great reception even when many people think this could be “another comic adaptation”.

It’s true that not everyone could think this is a masterpiece, but I haven’t heard no one (Unleast now) who said “I didn’t like it” or “This is a overrated film” – so was a great shot. Even oscarish films could suffer of detractors

Saw “The Dark Knight” yesterday… simply put, whatever you thought of “Batman Begins” is what you’ll probably think of “Dark Knight.”

For me, that means it’s an entertaining and well-made superhero film with some interesting issues on its mind, but it’s also a film that fails to reach greatness because it’s bogged down by its determination to be so serious and meaningful.
