In Contention

  • Updates to The Circuit

I’ve been a bit sluggish in getting recent guild news out there.  I think I’m already closing up shop in my mind.  Nevertheless, the Motion Picture Sound Editors and Costume Designers Guild have announced winners this week.  The latter infuriatingly keeps things a guessing game in that Oscar field.

  • Updates to The Circuit

Today “Black Swan” and “Inception” maintained their uniquely perfect guild status (having been cited by every single guild and society) by nailing down nominations in the contemporary category from the Costume Designers Guild. Every frontrunning possibility was chalked up, so the task is still pretty daunting to predict how that will go with Oscar.  That leaves just one industry precursor, the Motion Picture Sound editors, which should announce nominees tomorrow.

(Someone do the math for me.  Has a film ever been nominated for EVERY industry precursor?  PGA, DGA, WGA, SAG, ACE, ADG, ASC, CAS, CDG, MPSE and VES?)

Meanwhile, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) spoke up with its list of nominee.  I’ve noted only the three film categories.

  • WEEKLY WRAP: ‘Hurt Locker’ BAFTA sweep, minor fracas

Best Actress winner Carey Mulligan at the 2009 BAFTA Awards• “The Hurt Locker” continued its cruise through the precursors, taking six awards at the BAFTAS.

    • The pile of guild awards grew as the writers, costume designers and sound editors all picked their winners.

    • In our ongoing Oscar Guide series, we broke down the lead actress, documentary feature, documentary short, original score and original song races.

    • Off the Carpet took stock of a quiet season, mainly just counting down the days.

…have been announced.  Check out The Circuit for more.

  • Costume Designers Guild nominees

Sacha Baron Cohen in BrunoA nice guild mention for “Crazy Heart” which establishes some wider-spread love for the film.  It’s still a threat to slide into the 10, I’m telling you.

I expect this to be the period field minus “Julie & Julia” and add “Inglourious Basterds” (which was surprisingly snubbed) or “Bright Star” (which, the fact that it missed here is a friggin’ TRAVESTY).

Then again, I suppose Nora Ephron’s film, or even the flashy “Bruno,” are certainly possibilities.  Maybe even the vibrant threads of “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus,” my pick for best in show in this category.

“Avatar” gets another guild boost, while Danny Glicker is cited for “Up in the Air,” reminding me of our discussion of his vision for the threads in Jason Reitman’s film.  Check out the full list after the jump and at The Circuit.

  • CDG nominees

I’ve been out and about, so apologies for getting to the Costume Designers Guild nominees late:

    Contemporary Film
“Iron Man” (Laura Jean Shannon and Rebecca Bentjen)
    “Mamma Mia!” (Ann Roth)
“Sex and the City” (Patricia Field)
    “Slumdog Millionaire” (Suttirat Larlarb)
    “The Wrestler” (Amy Westcott)

    Period Film
    “Changeling” (Deborah Hopper)
“The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” (Jacqueline West)
    “The Duchess” (Michael O’Connor)
    “Milk” (Danny Glicker)
    “Revolutionary Road” (Albert Wolsky)

    Fantasy Film
“The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian” (Isis Mussenden)
    “The Dark Knight” (Lindy Hemming)
“The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor” (Sanja Milkovic Hays)

I have to say, while I could understand the classification for, say, the Tim Burton films, I’m increasingly agitated by the “fantasy” classification of Christopher Nolan’s Batman franchise.  And “The Dark Knight” is 10 times more “contemporary” than “Iron Man,” but whatever.  If the false classification means the films find some guild love in the fields of art direction and costume design, so be it, I guess.

More frankly surprising guild support for “The Wrestler,” while “Slumdog” and “Button” remain the guild champs.  I’m happy “Prince Caspian” finally popped up somewhere.

I see no real reason to change my Oscar predicitons here based on these results, but we’ll keep an eye on it as always.
