Startling ‘Antichrist’ trailer

Put Lars von Trier and Charlotte Gainsbourg together, and you have me at hello, so I don’t need to be sold — but damn it if this fragmentary-nightmare trailer doesn’t sell me on the film anyway.

I wasn’t quite expecting a full-throttle dive into horror from von Trier, but that’s certainly the vibe given off here. Intriguing. I assume this will crop up at Cannes?

I thought this movie couldn’t be bleaker than Dogville, regardless of it’s premise. Looks like I was wrong.

It looks really creepy but also slightly off-putting. I don’t know.

Lars Von Trier has guided actresses to their best performance : Watson in Breaking the waves, Bjork in Dancer in the dark, Kidman in Dogville (though there are many great perfs in her résumé to call this one her best)… hope he’ll do the same for Gainsbourg

In two words: powerful and intriguing. On the other hand, I think that Charlotte is not a great actress, but the director can do miracles. But certainly, one to look at this year

Another movie I think will be tremendous. Remember: Von Trier has experience in the horror realm, having done THE KINGDOM (later ripped off by Stephen King, no less). I have no idea if it’ll be great or not, but I do know it must be seen, particularly if Lars Von Trier is at the helm. However, because of that, very few people-at-large will like it.

Is Willem Dafoe not worth noting?

Dafoe is the fucking man. This flick looks very intriguing.

I find it very interesting that the end of the trailer only bothers to mention Lars von Trier, and not, say, any members of the cast. It’s not that Lars Von Trier won’t be a draw for the audience the film will get (which, since it’s Lars von Trier, won’t be much), but I always had the impression he was kind of an egomaniac. An egomaniac with moments of real genius, but an egomaniac nonetheless.

Genius have the right to be egomaniacs. That is why they are genius. For me, fine.

I know, huh? The trailer doesn’t even add anything to his name like “the director of ‘Dogville’” or “the man who brought you ‘Dancer in the Dark’”. In fact, it doesn’t say he’s the director.

JAB: No doubt, Dafoe is a fine actor. I’m just a little bit in love with Charlotte Gainsbourg, hence the extra appeal. Plus, Von Trier has a knack for putting his actresses through the ringer with spectacular results, so I’m really intrigued by that pairing.

As for the trailer credit, I’m with Bernardo — Von Trier’s earned the cred to advertise himself however he wants. If you need to be reminded of what else he made, chances are you’re not all that interested in the film.

Rewatched Dancer in the Dark last night and it melted my face off again. So, so good.

Good point, Guy. Lars von Trier doesn’t exactly strike me as a guy with mainstream appeal, but just showing his name will automatically attract hardcore fans of his.

Still, it is striking to find that he has more confidence in the marketability of his name in his trailers moreso than, say, Terence Davies or Gus Van Sant (the Elephant Van Sant, not the Milk one).

Von Trier is full of himself. Always has been and it’s no secret. The title card for Dancer in the Dark is a painting of his name that fills the entire frame, with the actual title superimposed much smaller in front of it. Putting his name in there has little to do with marketing if you ask me, although it does excite fans like myself.

Does the “sexy-ugly” concept apply to women? Or is it just reserved for men like James Woods? Charlotte Gainsbourg is certainly the least attractive woman I find so sexy.

It certainly can apply, Burma (think of the term “jolie-laide”), though I personally wouldn’t apply it to Gainsbourg. Just straight out beautiful, in my book.

It’s the “Gainsbourg” in her; she inherited her father’s allure, who was fascinating person to say the least.

Completely random, likely pointless observation: didn’t she wear the same sweater in The Science of Sleep? I don’t why this stood out to me or why I remember everyday apparel.
