Big ole’ poll this month

Inspired by John’s recent post on Oscarless directors, I thought I’d leave it to the masses to decide which helmer deserves it most. I collected 16 names from the discussion for the sidebar poll, so tell us what you think.

I love Hitchcock, Lumet, Bergman, Altman (for his structure but hardly ever the content of his films), MALICK, Leone, Chaplin & Fellini… but Hitchcock deserves to win this poll much like he deserved (probably more than one) Oscar.

Had to go with Altman. I’m sorry, but I love the man.

I was going back and forth between Kubrick and Hitchcock and decided to vote for Kubrick since at least one of Hitchcock’s films, Rebecca, won a Best Picture Oscar.

I’d have to say it’s a tie. Maybe that’s not admissible, but it’s true.

Stanley Kubrick–is it possible with many other directors to have THREE films in one person’s top twenty of all time list? And have those three be the greatest in their respective genres. The films, by the way, are “Dr. Strangelove”, “The Shining”, and “2001”, all of which are staggering works of art.

Sidney Lumet–Strangely enough I’ve only seen one of his films, “12 Angry Men”, but that was enough. It is, in my opinion, the greatest film ever made. Yes, even better than “Citizen Kane”, “Casablanca”, and “The Godfather”, and those are tough ones to beat.

Voted for Bergman myself, but seriously – what a coin-toss.

Joel, if you were that impressed by 12 Angry Men, you really should check out more of Lumet’s oeuvre – Dog Day Afternoon, Network, The Pawnbroker…

You’re lucky to have all that to discover still!

Yeah, I know. I have a list I need to sit down and watch. It’s a list of directors whose films I need to see. Lumet is one of them (along with Scorsese, Eastwood, and Coppola). The problem is time; I don’t have any.

But yes, Network is one of the first I will watch (since I’m watching Lumet first and I am seeing his movies in chronological order).
