Hey Kris, did you see in Nikki Finke’s piece on the Universal/Dreamworks/Disney disaster mention of Disney trying to unload Miramax. Have you heard anything about that?

Of the nominees, I choose Michael O’Connor’s work on The Duchess.

Button.

“Australia.” Beautifully and vibrantly designed costumes that are as bombastic – and effective – as the film they serve.
I love this slate of nominees, however, and would be fine if any of them won (save “The Duchess,” the kind of film that has won this category for the past two years. Something new, please).

This is Australia’s house.
The movie was completely maligned by some critics. I loved this movie and it was one of the most enjoyable movie-going experience I had last year.
It totally deserved more nominations.

Agree, Richard. Its snub in Cinematography is one of the most ludicrous and inexcusable of the decade. And Art Direction? Sound? Pitiful. How such an immensely enjoyable, beautifully crafted film got snubbed in almost all categories is beyond me. Oh well, I move on. But it should win this, its only category.
A really quality field this — three of the nominees (Milk, Australia and The Duchess) would feature in my own ballot. Hard to pick between them — The Duchess arguably had the most character-serving threads, as it’s pretty much about a woman who learns to define herself through her clothing, but I loved the range and wit of the work in Australia. I guess I’d go for the latter.
I really hope they pull a “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” and vote for Catherine Martin’s work on “Australia”, despite being maligned and not too popular it’s hard to deny the costumes were stunning. As Speaking English said “The Duchess” was won for the past two years under different titles so I hope they go for something a bit different.

After the victory of poorly embraced films like “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” and ” Marie-Antoinette” in this category, I feel OK predicting “The Duchess” to win.

The Duchess seems like the obvious one to win this. Being brilliantly decadent, detailed and old, I mean. But this is a tough category this year.
Jacqueline West did a beautiful, subtle job on Benjamin Button, as did Danny Glicker on Milk.
The costumes in the scene where Harvey goes to the christening of Dan White’s child are the best of the year to me.
