‘Tyrannosaur’ trailer

Paddy Considine’s directorial debut was one of the international success stories at this year’s Sundance fest, nabbing awards for both Olivia Colman and Peter Mullan’s performances, as well as one for Considine’s direction. I saw the film, a bruising, thoughtful portrait of abuse and emotional isolation in suburban England, and found the hype more than justified on the acting front. Mullan is as superbly tender-tough as we’ve come to expect from him, but it’s Olivia Colman — perhaps best known for her expert underplaying in the UK sitcom “Peep Show” — who’s the revelation here. I’ll save my full impressions of her stunning performance  for a review soon, but I will say that if Meryl Streep makes half as worthy a case for an Oscar nomination later this year, I’ll eat my literal hat.

The film will get a fresh blast of wind in its sails at next month’s Toronto Film Festival; Strand Releasing already has the US distribution rights, but has yet to announce a release date. (UK audiences have only until October 7 to wait.) Meanwhile, The Guardian unveiled a trailer this morning that gives but a hint of the acting firepower on offer here. Chills. The poster had me interested, this trailer has me hyped. Can’t wait.

I saw this a few weeks back and Olivia Colman’s final scene still haunts me. There’s one line that just tears me up and if Colman doesn’t get nominated it’ll be like Sally Hawkins and Leslie Manville combined. Absolutely devastating.

This looks great. Besides, who doesn’t love Doris from Hot Fuzz!

Anyone know the song at the end?

I can’t wait till more people get to see this movie, including Colman’s BIG big scene. Surely she can have a shot if campaigned supporting, yes? Wishful thinking? I’ve already moved on from the hope of Mullan getting a nomination he’ll likely deserve but if people can be convinced Colman’s supporting thennnn….?

Yes. Looks intense. And in Germany it’s coming out October 13th. Of this year!. That is spectacular. Feels like this year’s biggest release date miracle.

I like how they don’t really give away Colman’s brilliance in the trailer. For most of it, she’s just silent and blank-faced except for that last second of the trailer. With all the word of mouth, it will force voters to go see the film and study her performance in all its complexity…

Paddy Considine is perhaps THE most underrated talent, imo. Dead Man’s Shoes, In America, My Summer of Love, A Room for Romeo Brass, and Submarine (which I plan on viewing today or tomorrow)–just to name several, although there’s clearly more. I hope he gets some proper recognition stateside eventually.

But alas, excited for this. I wonder if we’ll get a 2011 US release date….Then again, Best Actress has some fierce competition it seems, so perhaps 2012 might allow this film to fare better. Though of no awards concern, just curious if anyone else’s performances were particularly noteworthy?

Didn’t like the trailer but since I read so many good things I might see it.

The Other James D: It’s mainly a two-hander, but Eddie Marsan does typically strong work in a tricky role.

Jack: It’s clearly a leading role, and should be campaigned as such — given that she’d be a dark horse in any category, you may as well go for the right one.

I would consider her lead, as well, but I think she can be argued as otherwise if you think of it as The Mullan Show and her character acts to help reveal and bring out his tender fuzzier side or something.

Olivia Colman is probably the most underrated actresses in UK. Even when featuing in some of the most banal of tv drama’s, such as Consuming Passion, she herself never fails to deliver.

This looks like a difficult but rewarding sit. Didn’t really appeal from what I’d read about it, but this trailer has me sold. Colman, an actress I’m not familiar with, looks terrific. Sorry to have missed it at the Sydney Film Fest this year.

She only reason anybody would consider Colman supporting is because “Oh, but she’s not famous and I want to nominate Meryl Streep.”

Having seen the film, seeing that trailer just opened up a whole lot of wounds.

That’s a damn powerful piece of cinema, no question.

Guy, why single out Meryl Streep? She isn’t the only performer to have benefited from Academy’s generosity. Many actresses including Helen Mirren, Judi Dench, Cate Blanchett, Sandra Bullock, Kate Winslet and Renee Zellweger have taken a spot from a worthier nominee. Every year there is at least one outstanding performance that is completely ignored.

Back to Olivia Colman, she is an absolute hoot on Beautiful People. Few episodes from the series are available on logotv website.

wd: I think it’s pretty obvious why I used Meryl Streep as an example — because she has a high-profile performance coming up that most pundits are regarding, sight unseen, as an automatic nominee. (And a performance, I confess, about which I harbour some concerns.)

It was a gentle dig — don’t take it too much to heart.

i had the weirdest sense of deja vu watching that; convinced i had seen the film already. a little googling revealed it’s an expansion of a short film i’d seen a couple of years ago (some scenes are exactly the same). phew, i thought i was going nuts there for a while

I’m a huge fan of Tyrannosaur (caught it at a small screening in London ages ago) and have been reading your pieces about it with great interest, Guy. I really hope that you and others like you (Jeffrey Wells comes to mind), will have some effect in giving this film a strong theatrical life, both here and abroad – it really deserves a bigger audience than films of this ‘size’ usually get, in my view.

As for the awards season, and in particular the Meryl Streep thing, I don’t know if you’ve spotted this little bit of trivia: Olivia Colman is in the Iron Lady, too, playing Carole Thatcher. That role is not big enough for any awards consideration, I don’t think, but all her scenes are with Meryl. And perhaps they’ll be going up against each other in the Best Actress category at the Baftas next year?
