In Contention

Here’s another question…

Can anyone tell me why “Let the Right One In” and “A Christmas Tale” are not eligible for a nomination in any category at the Oscars?

Sure, so the latter film was never going to score with them anyway. But I was considering “Let the Right One In” as a dark horse possibility for Best Adapted Screenplay — a category that frequently throws up surprise nominees — until I saw neither film is on the official AMPAS list. (You’ll be relieved to know, however, that “Disaster Movie” is securely in the running.)

Both films had 2008 Stateside releases, as far as I know. Illuminate me, readers.

I am sorry for popping in…. But for me when people keep talking about snubbings only one movie comes to mind… Revolutionary Road. Movie city news has it decently high in top ten chart board. The movie has a really good theater average and Kate Winslet is the golden girl and yet no love. The Movie is easily among the years best… On acting alone it is the best. But it gets snubbed for picture, director, actor (Dicaprio kick Brad Pitts older a55), supporting actor (Patel or franco over shannon… LOL), and many of the other categories you oscar watchers see it fighting to hold on to or expendable in. To me the biggest snub of the year. Yet Gran Torino is gaining steem. Enjoyable yes, but the film is like the titanic and Bee Vang is a Glacier. The acting other than Eastwood or the priest really sinks the film from being anything other than good. But yet there is a buzz building for maybe a best picture surprise nod. This year feels to safe compared to the last two years. Daring films like Rachel Getting Married, The wrestler, and Rev Road really don’t have a shot a best pic. Yet Gran Torino Does… Enough Said.

Outrageous. LET THE RIGHT ONE IN deserves noms for director, cinematography, and screenplay, and Deneuve should be up for Best Actress for CHRISTMAS TALE.

On my way to the Inauguration. Enjoy this day, everybody.

Other movies stay out of the list:

    The Brothers Bloom
    Flight of the Red Balloon
    A Girl Cut in Two
    I.O.U.S.A.
    Love Songs (Les Chansons D’Amour)
    Man on Wire
    Paranoid Park
    Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired
    Savage Grace
    Tuya’s Marriage

“The Brothers Bloom” was pushed back to 2009, Kurt. I think it’s being released in the spring.

Don’t know what the deal is with the others, though I saw several of them in 2007, so maybe that’s when their qualifying screenings were. Just guessing.

I think that every country gets to have only 1 Foreign language film in play and that film alone is eligible in other categories too. So Let The Right One In (Sweden submitted Everlasting Moments) & Christmas Tale (France submitted The Class) got snubbed. I think both might be eligible in all categories next year.

Last year France submitted Persepolis but Diving Bell, another French film was popping up in multiple categories. Thats because it was a part US production.

Again, 1 film per country rule is ridiculous and needs to be scrapped. But then again, almost 200 Hollywood films are released in the US every year and on top of that if we expect the Academy to watch another 200 foreign language films, thats really asking too much.

Red Wine: No, that’s not the case. “La Vie en Rose” and “Talk to Her” are recent examples of films that got nominated in general field categories, despite not being selected as their respective countries’ foreign-language entries.

I forgot to add that “I’ve Loved You So Long” is obviously eligible in all other categories this year, despite not being the French selection.

I actually think for Let the Right One In it didn’t obey the Oscar rule about the TV airings. I saw Let the Right One In at the Tribeca Film Festival last April. The writer & director were both there and I remember something down the line like that. Not 100 percent sure but I believe I remember them saying that it did air in Swedish television first. So that could be it.

I know Let the Right One in wasn’t eligible to be picked by Sweden for their submission since it was released after the ’08 deadline but I do not think that would/could have affected its chances in other categories…

Bill, I’m not sure about Let The Right One In, but I’m pretty sure A Christmas Tale is out because of TV as it has (and still is) available on IFc on demand pay-per-view, Paranoid Park did the same thing earlier this year and it is not eligible also.

One thing that really does bug me is why is Man on Wire not eligible for general oscars like BP or editing, it is on the doc shortlist and I know documentaries can compete for those awards and there are other doc shortlisted films on the reminder list, so did they just not submit it outside of documentary?

“I know Let the Right One in wasn’t eligible to be picked by Sweden for their submission since it was released after the ‘08 deadline but I do not think that would/could have affected its chances in other categories…”

Does that mean it could potentially be their pick next year?

I thought the score for “A Christmas Tale” was excellent and could have been a dark horse for that category. I also agree that there were possibilities for general category nominations for “Let the Right One In”. I knew they weren’t eligible for Best Foreign Language Film, but I was surprised and disappointed to learn about their ineligibility for other categories. Sigh…

I don’t know for sure, but it could be that the films did not submit the required forms to be considered eligible for the awards. According to the Academy’s rules, a film is not eligible if they do not submit a form, signed by the producer or distributor, containing the film’s complete credits, the name of the L.A. County theater where the film was played and the dates of the L.A. run. So my best guess is the producers did not submit the forms so the films are not eligible. Again, I don’t know this for sure, but it is a probably explanation.

Does anyone know where i could get the lists for previous years of eligible films. I’ve tried searching with no luck. They used to be on the old oscars.org site but they aren’t on the new one. If anyone has these and has time, shoot me an email. It would be very much appreciated. Also cassandra’s dream wasn’t on the list, i’m not sure why, it wasn’t on last years either. Not that it would be in contention for anything, but there are a lot worse films that are on the list. And it was realeased this year in LA, i’m not sure why its not on the list…as for the two you mentioned, i think its because of the tv thing which has been the case with foriegn films in the past, so i assumed that was the case with those two.

Andrew Smith is probably right about the lack of paperwork since both “Man on Wire” and “Let the Right One In” has the same distributor. It’s a shame.

i happened to see ‘let the right one in’ last night and was floored. it was the work of a steady handed and secure director. with a subject that teeters on the edge of the ridiculous cliff, it would have not been a stretch to think most directors jump off and go for silly gags and vampiric…um…{BLAH!} but to hold the film steadily and keep it grounded in reality was a wonder. i’d have said slumdog and rev road were two of the better NON WALL-E films this year and would not be mad if either took top prize. but after seeing ltroi….there’s not even a discussion anymore. it is not a horror movie, it is not a vampire movie, it is a movie about friendship and how solitary and unforgiving youth can be on some/most kids. i demand a screenplay nod and a dp nod. and if you have any power WHATSOEVER, please don’t allow ‘them’ to remake this movie.
