BOX OFFICE: A good weekend for Portman

She’s got two entries on the box office chart and a headwind going into phase two.  Nice ink for “The King’s Speech” being in the top four after last night’s big win.  “True Grit” closes in on $150 million.

Just back from ‘Another Year’. Gut-wrenching. No major character dies, and yet, I haven’t felt a heavier film in quite some time. It actually surprasses ‘Blue Valentine’, for me (slightly), as far as me feeling like a cement block was on my chest as the credits rolled.

The writing is excellent; no shock there. Every actor/actress is perfect.

But Manville? Good God. She is superb, and yet, even I have no idea where to place her (Lead or Supporting) …

She doesn’t really enter the movie until 15 minutes in. She comes and goes throughout. But the ending is very much so about her. Timewise, it’s supporting. Dramatic heft – she accounts for a lot. I don’t know. It’ll be a travesty when she’s not nominated, unless by some miracle, she is.

Anyone have any idea how the film is doing in extremely limited release? The theater I went to was packed (mostly old folks). And the general sentiment when it was over was very positive.

And so happy by the holds for TKS, Black Swan, True Grit, & The Fighter. Wow.

I am so happy for Natalie Portman. I saw “No Strings Attached”, and I liked it a lot. It was really funny and the chemistry between Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman was red hot.

I can’t wait to see her standing on stage accepting her Oscar at the end of February.

With the likelihood of having the most Oscar noms come Tuesday, a nice expansion, and weak new competition, there’s a chance The King’s Speech could be #1 this coming weekend.

Toy Story 3 – $414,806,932 (no longer in theatres)
Inception – $292,576,195 (no longer in theatres)
    True Grit – $138,633,427
    The Social Network – $94,964,387
The Town – $92,186,262 (no longer in theatres)
    Black Swan – $83,580,631
    The Fighter – $73,031,236
    The King’s Speech – $58,623,270
The Kids Are All Right – $20,811,365 (no longer in theatres)
    127 Hours – $11,299,448
    Winter’s Bone – $6,267,070

Regardless of how Best Picture plays out next month, we’re looking at the possibility of 6 out of 10 BP nominees grossing 100+m. That’s something to cheer.

True Grit held a little bit better then I expected. Personally, while I have no stake in box-office, I’d like to see if it could surpass something like grown-ups if it holds enough momentum into the oscar season. Won’t happen, but a man can wish can’t he?

I was quite concerned about this movie and its chance of hurting Natalie’s Oscar chance. Coming out at the top of box office is good for her and adds to the narrative about her!

On a different note, Chris, i am glad you liked it. I was just talking to a friend. We both agreed that some critics are very tough on some movies just because they are rom-coms! Some movies are for critical praise and awards and some others are just for fun! If they nominated Natalie for this movie, it would be different. But this movie just shows that she has range! From a very heavy fantasy-drama to a funny rom com! Good for her!

There’s a little belt of BP nominees from 4-6 and then 8, with only “Little Fockers” breaking the chain.

Actually Ashton Kutcher’s movies What Happens in Vegas and Just Married had higher attendance than No Strings.

Sertan – I agree, critics are never favorable when it comes to romantic comedies. But “No Strings Attached” is by far one of the best of the genre, I have seen in a while. And even the reviews for the film, aren’t as bad as I thought they were going to be. It’s a very good movie, and proves how talented Natalie Portman is.

Good for Natalie Portman. I’ve heard surprisingly good things about the film (especially for Portman) and she’s also an exec-producer. Debuting at number one in the middle of the awards season plus having her Oscar contending hit ‘Black Swan’ in the top 10 still, holding up strong on it’s way to the $100 mil mark, just bodes well for Portman. She’s enjoying a career high, and with a baby on the way and her engagement, a personal high as well. Good for her!

‘True Grit’, ‘The Fighter’ and ‘The King’s Speech’ holding up so strong on the charts is a great thing to see.

JJ1, I feel Manville is clearly a leading performance. The film is about her, with (as Guy so rightly mentioned) Tom and Gerri as the sounding board. She ends the film, and you leave thinking about her and what will become of her as another year rolls on. She flavors the entire picture, and even when she is not on screen you think of her. It’s like Hopkins in “The Silence of the Lambs” but with more screen time.

I really am so happy Black Swan will hit $100m. That is absurd for that movie, and i still can’t believe it, but amazed a great movie can still make a lot of money. (and not just BS..most of the awards contenders are seeing much higher numbers than usual)

I, too, made a point of seeing NO STRINGS today. Reitman shot PORTMAN like a movie star and she delivered. She’s gorgeous, charismatic, and surprisingly committed for such a film. I don’t think it will hurt her it all. I didn’t like the movie as much as come of the other commenters – it needed some editing and better dialogue, but the stars definitely have some chemistry.

Speaking English, I “think” I agree, haha. I basically feel that it is Leading, but I’m trying to substantiate all the reasons it “could” be Supporting in my mind. I’ll go Leading, but will be absolutely fine if she’s acknowledged anywhere.

I’m not a huge fan of “The Way Back”, but it was still sad to see it make little impact. A $2,000 per theater avg. isn’t terrible, but I would have liked to have seen it perform better.

These numbers are not the real weekend estimates. Most films did quite a bit better than they did according to the numbers above. True Grit made $8m for example, The Green Hornet had $18.1m and The King’s Speech nabbed $9.2m.

It’s pretty fascinating that The Social Network, which seemed like it’d be one of the most successful films box office-wise now might not even be one of the top five grossers among the Best Picture nominees. Black Swan should make it past $100m, and The King’s Speech could also make it that far by virtue of it probably becoming the film with most nominations (thus getting all the headlines: “King’s Speech leads Oscars with XX nominations”), and it still can expand quite a bit to keep momentum going.

So Jackie Burkhart and Michael Kelso both slept with Natalie Portman and both scenes were taped? I guess it was That 70’s Show. ;)

No way “The King’s Speech” gets more nominations than “Inception.” It should come in around second though.

If the King’s Speech keeps adding screens over the next 4-5 weeks (from 1680 to, say, 2300-2400), I can see it squeaking past The Social Network, if not substantially more. Incredible.

Does anyone have any idea how many screens a movie like The King’s Speech could get up to?

Inception will likely get pic, dir, os, ed, cin, art, soundx2, fx, score. That’s 10.

I could see The King’s Speech getting pic, dir, actor, sactor, sactress, os, ed, art, cost, score. That’s 10.

Cin and/or Sound makes it 11-12.

  21. Loyal Avatar

I think the fact that The Social Network could be #7 in box office behind Toy Story 3, Inception, True Grit, The King’s Speech, Black Swan, and The Fighter by the time Oscars are awarded on Feb 27th says a lot about how strong the box office is for contenders this year.

I also think Inception is good for 10 noms while The King’s Speech should do one better for 11. Black Swan will be up there as well, and The Fighter and True Grit should be good for at least 8 noms apiece.

I wouldn’t be shocked if The Social Network is 7th in box office and 6th in overall nominations, maybe even tied with Toy Story 3.

I saw The Illusionist and The Green Hornet this weekend. One was so touching and beautiful that I’m slowly gathering my thoughts and trying to word it’s simple elegance. The other warranted a reaction so strong I had to vomit out my disdain immediately!

    TKS’s numbers are amazing.

  25. Speaking English Avatar

“Social Network” should be good for eight or so. That should put it around third place.

  26. Kristopher Tapley Avatar

I’m expecting 11 nods for TKS, 10 for Inception. Not that far-fetched.

9 for True Grit, 8 for Black Swan, 7 for TSN and The Fighter.

    But more on that tomorrow.

  27. Speaking English Avatar

I’m predicting it for nine, but I guess those extra two come from borderlines like cinematography and editing? I’m not quite on board with those yet, but possible.

Seven for “Network” seems low however. That would mean you’re probably counting out supporting actor, score, and/or sound mixing?

  28. JJ1 Avatar
    JJ1

I don’t think The Social Network will get much more than pic, dir, actor, sactor, as, ed, score. That’s 7. But I could see 8 or 9 (cin, sound) if they luvvv it. And that’s also if Garfield gets in.

  29. Kristopher Tapley Avatar

Inception getting nominated for Best Picture would be a victory in itself. Although I would love to see Chris Nolan take home Best Director.

Nice to see the contending pics–TKS, TG, BS, and TF–being embraced at the box office. Hooray for the audiences who are supporting these fine films aimed at adults.
