Updates to The Circuit

Today “Black Swan” and “Inception” maintained their uniquely perfect guild status (having been cited by every single guild and society) by nailing down nominations in the contemporary category from the Costume Designers Guild. Every frontrunning possibility was chalked up, so the task is still pretty daunting to predict how that will go with Oscar.  That leaves just one industry precursor, the Motion Picture Sound editors, which should announce nominees tomorrow.

(Someone do the math for me.  Has a film ever been nominated for EVERY industry precursor?  PGA, DGA, WGA, SAG, ACE, ADG, ASC, CAS, CDG, MPSE and VES?)

Meanwhile, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) spoke up with its list of nominee.  I’ve noted only the three film categories.

TDK did. Didn’t get an ensemble nom, but it one-ups Inception’s Stunt nod (which looks like we’re counting) with an additional Supporting Actor nod.

Makes me hate 2008 all over again.

On the costume guild … no big surprises. Any big names missing, I suppose, would be Secretariat, Robin Hood, The Way Back, or Made in Dagenham (a hit with BAFTA). But yeah … good choices all around, I’d say.

My guess for wins would be: Burlesque/The King’s Speech/Alice. But I feel like any of those could miss, too. The noms are solid. The wins? Slightly up in the air.

The flip flops Jesse Eisenberg wore in The Social Network were stunning. lol.

No, but in all seriousness, though… I had commented before that I could see Inception sneaking in Costume Design at the Oscars. With the competition it currently has… I’d give it a 50/50 of getting in at the expense of Black Swan.

    – Alice in Wonderland.
    – Black Swan vs. Inception.
    – Burlesque.
    – The King’s Speech.
    – True Grit.

The Fellowship of the Ring didn’t get a CDG nomination in 2001 !!!! And Moulin Rouge neither!

Is anyone else depressed that The Fighter is a “period film”. I can’t disagree with the categorization, it just makes me feel old.

I thought “The Hurt Locker” was nominated for every guild last year? And I remember “Slumdog Millionaire” also being cited at each one, although VES I can’t be sure about.

Thanks for mentioning the GLAAD nominations, Kris. I find it odd that they only nominated The Girl Who Played With Fire – why not just give the three films a single nod? Despite that minor complaint, a pretty good list and I’m glad (ha) they didn’t snub The Kids Are All Right, where I know some had issues with the treatment of Jules’ sexuality. (I disagree with their complaints, and I’m glad GLAAD agrees.)
