The ONLY slight surprise in the Art Director Guild, for me, is no ‘Secretariat’.

Otherwise, I think, pretty bang on.

Yeah, pretty safe and kind of predictable, too. Pick five from the contemporary and fantasy fields. Is there anything, really, that can slide in that wasn’t noticed there?

But, but… Inception is not a fantasy. It’s a dream!

    :)

One could also argue that “Shutter Island” is in a wrong category. It’s clearly got a period setting baaaaaaaaaaht

Finally some Shutter Island love. I hope the ASC and ACE follow suit.

I had hoped Scott Pillgrim would get an ADG nomination in the contemporary category, but it could also be categorized as a fantasy.

Shutter Island fans, what would you like the movie to get?

    Thelma, Thelma, Thelma, darklayers.

When in the name of all that is holy is the NSFC announcing? Damn it, I look forward to their picks all year long.

Wouldn’t you say that Thelma’s overrated? Her win for The Aviator is particularly perplexing considering that the plane crash sequence that was shown in all of the awards montages was just terrible (though Scorsese might be equally to blame for that).

Nobody mentions Michael Kahn (like ever!) who leads her by only one nomination but he is an infinitely more versatile editor. He should have friggin’ won for his work on Minority Report for the way he cut all the visions alone. But I digress.

darklayers, as a huge Shutter Island fan, I’d enjoy Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, and Best Make-Up.

Ideally, hoping it at least actually gets editing, cin, and art direction.

    Best Art Direction:
    “Alice in Wonderland”
“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I”
    “Inception”
    “The King’s Speech”
    “True Grit”

Shutter Island absolutely deserves to get in for Cinematography and Art Direction. It’s STILL tops in my book in both of those categories, although I do have plenty yet to see.

Solid bunch of nominees from the ADG. I do agree that Inception belong more in contemporary than fantasy, but I can’t really think of any film that got really unfairly snubbed in the fantasy category anyway.

One film that deserved notice here though would be The Wolfman. The film wasn’t great, but the much of the craftsmanship was really well done.

I would also echo Guy’s comments on 127 Hours’ Art Direction. It’s obviously art directed, but there’s no way it warranted a nomination.

And I believe there should be 2 acting nominations from “Shutter Island.” Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo.

Plus, Picture, Director, Adapted Screenplay, Art Direction, Costume Design, Film Editing, and score if it is eligible.

RE: “Shutter Island” I forgot Best Cinematography.

Can anyone please explain to me the ‘ART DIRECTION” in The Social Network? Why didn’t they just put Inception in Contemporary category and oust The Social Network… I don’t think Inception is a Fantasy…

Anyway, nice to see Get Low getting some love… It deserves the nomination….

“Wouldn’t you say that Thelma’s overrated?”

No, I would never say that. Since you asked.

And yes, Michael Kahn is amazing, too.

matsunaga: I think any movie with zero-gravity fight sequences and cities folding onto each other could easily be considered fantasy.

These guilds routinely fuck over contemporary designers. The only reason “The Town” and “The Fighter” are considered better contemporary designs than, say, “The Joneses”, “Burlesque”, “Fish Tank” or several other titles is because they’re on Oscar’s radar. I bet “Conviction” would’ve been nominated if it had caught on, too.

“127 Hours” gets nominated this year, “The Descent” didn’t get nominated in 2005. I wonder why that is? (that was sarcasm, don’t answer it.)

    And “The Ghost Writer”, obviously.

Perhaps its because “127 Hours,” while not as much work as “The Descent,” actually seemed buyable. At least 50% of “The Descent”‘s sets looked absolutely fake. I’m not sure if that was the fault of the art director or the gaffer for not rigging them properly, but they just flat-out looked like a stage, while I thought “127 hours” looked realistic in every shot.
