And the films, voted on by like a handful of people (so whatever) are:
“Black Swan”
“The Fighter”
“Inception”
“The Kids Are All Right”
“127 Hours”
“The Social Network”
“The Town”
“Toy Story 3”
“True Grit”
“Winter’s Bone”
Meanwhile, the New York Film Critics Online have announced their winners. No surprise “The Social Network” won Best Picture, Best Director and Best Screenplay. The winners at The Circuit.
Also, the AFI’s “Announcing the Honorees” video after the jump.

It says on The Wrap “The Kids Are Alright” got in the 10 and “The Kings Speech” got a special award.
Because it’s a British film
Wow, AFI is so cut and dry, it could practically be the 10 eventual Best Picture nominees….
Kids? really?
Things are certainly looking good for Christian Bale, Jackie Weaver, and Melissa Leo in the supporting races.
the usual suspects(except for Franco and foreign picture)
The AFI list doesn’t seem to be found on the Circuit.
We don’t bother collecting top 10 lists.
I can understand that – there’s too many of them. But since AFI’s list is not given out by an individual – it seems like it’s something that could be worth tracking, for completness’ sake.
Interesting that 127 Hours got on there, seeing as BAFTA considers it a British film.
Other than that, no shocking omission, no real surprise.
And Libatique picks up ANOTHER award. Wow.. Not that critics awards have much influence on this category, but good for him.
As opposed to last year I guess the AFI is matching up quite a bit with the Academy favorites.
Wow, switch in “The Kings Speech” for either “Black Swan,” “The Kids are All Right,” “The Town,” or “Winter’s Bone” and you’ve pretty much got your BP line-up. I’m guessing, in the end, “The Kids are All Right” gets the shaft (for reasons too complex to try and summarize in a post like this).
@The Dude – I hope the movie they switch out is The Town or Winter’s Bone when they replace it with The King’s Speech. In other words keep Black Swan in the final line-up!!!
I’ll be disgusted if it does The Dude. It’s a far better movie than some of the flavor of the moments being rushed out here in December. But sadly it looks like it has a backlash on it.
If LAFC gives it to Portman the best actress race is over. Regardless of what anyone says.
TSN is sweeping, Inception won`t fail nominations for Picture and Director and Bale is coming closer to BSA win with every critic award. All is good. Although I`d prefer Inception or Black Swan wins in picture and director because I love genre but fat chance, AMPAS doesn`t care. Portman must win and my favorites for Best Actor are Jesse& James.
I wish The Kids Are All Right would be swapped out, or better, that they decided The King’s Speech was lukewarm awards bait and ditched it. Black Swan, Winter’s Bone, and The Town all richly deserve Picture nominations.
The AFI list will almost certainly match the Oscar nominations for Best Picture. However, The King’s Speech will definitely replace one of those films. Which one? I’m thinking Black Swan or The Town.
I think The King’s Speech takes TKAAR’s spot on there. Calling it now TBH.
Wow, the King’s Speech is TANKING! Not even getting nominated anywhere… This race is, eh, over folks!
The King’s Speech was never going to be a critics awards darling like The Social Network. It’s in for Oscars, it hits all the right notes for them.
Not a winner is okay, but not even in the Top 10?
I wouldn’t say that The King’s Speech is tanking. It wasn’t in the AFI’s Top Ten because it wasn’t eligible as a British film. Based on what we’ve seen so far The Social Network is the only film on the AFI list that IS doing exceptionally well.
@Lesley43: TKS is a British production. It’s not eligible for the AMERICAN Film Institute’s Top 10. Nothing is “over” this early.
What about 127 Hours, didn’t Danny Boyle and Brit Film houses make that one?
C0-American production I’d assume, since it was eligible for main awards at the Film Independent Spirit Awards, also restricted to American films only.
Yeah! The Spirit Awards nominated The King’s Speech under Best Foreign Film!
*Nods* It was the same situation with An Education last year and all perennial British BP contender flicks.
Is there anybody who doesn’t think that The Social Network is the Best Movie of the year so far?
I don’t, but I’m not official enough to count :P.
I don’t think it is either, but it should be in the Top Ten.
Oh definitely. I just hope this year is less predictable win-wise. I don’t mind if the nominees are predictable because for the most part, I’m content with the prognostications. I’d love a BP/Director split with Fincher and something else though, to keep it fresh.
I would LOVE to see TSN win BP, since it is, you know, the best picture of the year. And the way things are going, it may very well end up winning.
I’m still waiting for the campaign season to bring some twists and turns where the battle clearly becomes The Social Network v. The King’s Speech, and with the 10 nominees and the ranking system, the two frontrunners end up losing out to a surprise victory by Toy Story 3.
It looks like TSN is going to consolidate enough support, however, to win.
I was kind of expecting “Blue Valentine” on the AFI list, for some reason. They loved putting random Gosling or Williams films on before. Plus, the “little indie that needs help” status is right up the AFI’s alley. Or I would’ve thought something like “Rabbit Hole” or “How to Train Your Dragon” would make it.
The AFI put together this little video of their honorees (film & tv). Pretty nice!
