‘Brighton Rock’ trailer

I’m not sure who at The Guardian called Rowan Joffe’s new adaptation of “Brighton Rock” a “masterpiece,” as this new trailer boasts they did — I like to think they were talking about Graham Greene’s still blood-fresh source novel instead. From where I’m standing, Joffe’s directorial debut, which I reviewed out of the London Film Festival last month, stands as one of the year’s most bewildering disappointments: from its fundamental misread of the text to its tonally scattered ensemble to its egregiously aggressive score. Still, it apparently found enough fans to scoop four BIFA nominations, so there’s no accounting for taste. I’d almost lay money on a 2011 Oscar nod for Best Art Direction, too — that is, if a US distributor ever steps forward. It hits UK screens in February, just in time for BAFTA eligibility.

actually seeing Helen Mirren in this trailer that makes me want to see this movie. isn’t Carey Mulligan also in this movie in small role?

Best part of this trailer is the Atonement score…

This looks completely mis-marketed. There is no ‘love’ story in the novel whatsoever (unless you count Rose’s affection for Pinkie), but here they make it look like a tragic love story between a girl and her gangster. OF COURSE.

i wonder where I heard the musical score at the first part of the trailer? Anyone?

Mikhael: Carey Mulligan is not in the film. She was initially cast in Riseborough’s role, but pulled out. (Good call, Carey.)

Dame Helen is the only reason why I’m going to see it. How is her performance, by the way?

Rizza: It’s the score from Atonement

The fact that many are using Atonement’s original score lately (this, Mildred Pierce…) just goes to prove that it’s one of the best of its decade and definitely goes through the test of time. After 3 years, I’m still constantly listening to tunes from it, which I find brilliant.

I believe you that it might suck a lot. from the trailer I could tell I’m not liking this type of cinematography… But Mirren seems intriguing.

anyway, a much too revealing trailer.

    Luke: I knew it! Thanks…

Alex: I can totally agree on that.. Marianelli did a very well job on Atonement score… Well deserved Oscar for him..

Looks like Helen Mirren can be in contention for her role in this movie given the chance… She has done trashy films this year.. Well Red might be an exception?

Couldn’t agree more, a completely pointless remake.

Will: See my review (linked in the post) for more detailed thoughts on Mirren. She’s not good.
