‘Hereafter’ trailer

Written by

in

Clint Eastwood’s “Hereafter” is set to play Toronto this Sunday.  No screenings in LA until after the festival but there have been a few vague reactions already.  The story revolves around current event disasters (the London tube bombings, the Sri Lanka tsunami, etc.) to tell a story of, you know, death and stuff.  The trailer just released via Apple and looks properly somber, revolving mostly around Matt Damon’s character (of the reported triptych).  What else to say other than that?  Check it out by clicking the link below or watch an embed after the jump.

Looks like Eastwood is back on track after a so-so effort in Invictus.

Looks a lot better then his last few films, I had no expectations for this but now it looks like it may be some quality entertainment.

Well, aside from some shoddy looking special effects (to me), it looks … intriguing?

Looks better than Invictus at least

It won’t be difficult to beat “Invictus.” Looks excellent.

Interesting.. I don’t really know what to make of the trailer, but the tsunami part gave me chills. I’m still interested in this, and I’ll be looking for the early reactions after it screens this weekend.

    Predictably terrible.

Looks good to me, besides that odd spoken “HEREAFTER” right at the end.

well depicted from the trailer it looks like the movie will be intresting. to me it looks like jenifer lewis shined in the trailer.

This is the first Eastwood movie I have been excited about since Million Dollar Baby.

Jesus, guys! Matt Damon is an Academy Award winning screenwriter!! That means his acting in the movie will be amazing. Plus, tsunami, questions about what is beyond this life, being there for someone who is afraid of “being alone”…

    What more do you want??

Mr Eastwood, is this movie you did any good?

Clint: I DON’T DO THIS ANYMORE!

    Seriously, it looks skippable.

Weird thing about Hereafter in Toronto. It only has one public screening (most films have three and nearly all films have two), and I checked the press and industry schedule and it apparently doesn’t have a single screening scheduled there. No clue as to why or if there’s any significance attached to that, but it’s strange.

It is nice to see Mister “I hate special effects” embracing CGI magic with a Deep Impact style tsunami.

Not going to hate, this actually looks very promising to me. The first Eatwood directed flick that I’ve anticipated, at least now, since Unforgiven nearly twenty years ago.

I could honestly care less and do genuinely not see this as having a shred of quality, but I’ve been wrong before.

Are you guys fucking kidding me? What frame of this doesn’t look god awful, even by Eastwood’s terrible standards. Please tell me you all are just placating him because he’s an old man.

How dare he use the tsunami to dramatize some white family’s grief.

    Blame that on Morgan.

I’ll be really interested to see how Eastwood handles the supernatural, something that’s never really been a part of his movies before. Plus, a great cast. “Invictus” was pretty average (though with great performances), but “Gran Torino” was one of my favourite films of the last decade, and he’s one of the most consistent working filmmakers.

If the trailer was just two minutes of Jenifer Lewis then I think it would’ve jumped to the top of my must see list. Probably no more than a one-scene cameo, but she looked potent.

Other than that… hmmm… that tsunami stuff felt a bit strange to tell you the truth.

It’s definitely not something you expect to see in an Eastwood film – but I’m really intrigued by the big scope he’s going for here.

Personally, I think it looks extremely intriguing. I could see how some people have certain reservations about this, especially since many of Eastwood’s past few movies have been met with so-so reactions, but I’ve always loved the supernatural and spiritual as both a moviemaker and a moviegoer, and this looks like a potential top-notch handler of a style of moviemaking in which I greatly enjoy. It could be bad, or it could be really good. Regardless to critical reaction, I’ll wanna see it when it comes out, so I guess the trailer had the right impact on me.

After reading the screenplay, I can say this. It’s not a disaster drama. It’s not a supernatural thriller. It’s a straight drama. Which is why I think this trailer is not good. It’s completely misleading. The CGI events in the film are flashes in the screenplay. It’s much more spiritual and emotional at the core. It’s one example of a badly cut trailer misleading the audience.

Not what I was expecting at all. I will still see it but I don’t think this is going to be going far at all in terms of Awards. I do think it is nice to see the actress from Haute Tension get a big role in a Hollywood film.

Also, I am not gonna lie – I have always found it frustrating whenever they advertise Matt Damon as an Academy Award winner. I know he won an Oscar, but for writing, not for acting! If he was writing the screenplay – then I wouldn’t be annoyed if they said written by Academy Award winner Matt Damon, but when they advertise that for a movie that he is just acting in, I can’t help but roll my eyes. (I know he has been nominated twice but still…)

Put me it the “intriguing” camp. Clint always seizes on topics that pose questions and provoke thought about things that have meaning to me.

I think this looks interesting, but a little unwieldy. If Clint can pull it off, it could work, but I’m a little skeptical.

    Gotta’ love BDH though. ;)

“How dare he use the tsunami to dramatize some white family’s grief.”

It’s not like that, Chad. The tsunami is a plot device setting in motion a chain of events to help Matt Damon’s character get laid.

    see? silver lining and whatnot.

The most supernatural thing in the movie is watching Peter Morgan channel Paul Haggis.

Eastwood has a big ally in Spielberg here. His touch is felt.

Well at least it seems well-lit.

And it looks like the opposite of “2012” – instead of a disaster-movie with forced teary-drama parts, it looks like a teary-drama with forced disaster parts.

Looks intriguing. Invictus may have been a dull, flat snooze, but this looks far better, more a long the lines of his earlier work. Color me interested.

Looks like a M Night Shamaylawateva film directed by Old Clint.
But at least we get to see Marthe Keller again in a big film.

I was gonna say what Jen said, it looks like something right out of the M. Night Shyamalan playbook.

Gotta say this looks like the least interesting film by Eastwood in ages, maybe because the trailer manages to feel like it’s showing a lot about the movie, yet it gives me no real idea what the hell it’s about. Very confusing trailer, and not in the good teasing way.

Damon’s collaborations with Eastwood is looking like they’ll be remembered as the low-points of his career, Oscar nomination be damned.

looks good but can I just say one thing without being crucified by CE fans? :)
A tsunami doesn’t look like that. They perfectly reconstructed the wave we saw in some youtube videos, but that was the second wave.
The first one has never been filmed and was 50 meters high.

Not to beat a dead horse, but rewatching the trailer makes me think that anyone who watches Damon’s character’s website ends up dying (or nearly). Like The Ring, except a website instead of a videotape.

I was just watching Unforgiven a few days ago, Clint’s last great movie. Letters From Iwo Jima is probably #2. The rest of his 90s-00s filmography is spotty at best.

I just think Eastwood is overrated. My opinions:

    Unforgiven – Excellent.
Bridges of Madison Cty. – An acting showcase.
Million Dollar Baby – Very good, if tv movie-ish.
Flags/Iwo Jima – Lonnngg, boring, but pretty.
Gran Torino – Clint good, direction/script stunk.
Invictus – OK, but bland as dishwater.

And Hereafter … like I said earlier, intriguing. But it doesn’t necessarily look good to me, either.

Finally something I can agree on with Chad. This looks terrible.
Although I liked Million Dollar Baby and thought Gran Torino was at least a decent film.

Looks too ambitious to have that kind of dialogue. It was kind of cliché and I thought the movie was aiming higher.

And BTW Mystic River is great and I thought Changeling was good.

It looks terrible, I didnt expect that… even less the special effects involving a tsunami..?! Not moving either, his best movies to date were a lot simpler but strong storytellers..

Great to see Clint harking back to some older comedic roots.
Is this a kind of follow on to “Any which way you can” and “Every which way but loose?
More than a few parallels noted.
    No damn Orang-Utan though.
