Happy Independence Day to my fellow Stateside brethren. I was trying to find something nifty on YouTube, but this map from the folks at Hollywood.com is pretty cool. Click on the image to head that way, where you can hover your mouse over your state and find out what movie set there the editors consider tops. My two stomping grounds — Virginia and North Carolina — got “Donnie Darko” (boo) and “Blue Velvet” (nice) respectively.
And oh, why not a couple nifty YouTube clips after all (on the jump).

My state got Wedding Crashers. Sweet.
Donnie Darko (boo), good call.
Florida got Scarface. Wildy overrated, but still good. I can’t complain.
New Jersey has Clerks. I can’t believe i didn’t see that one coming.
“I miss you like Michael Bay missed the mark, when he made Pearl Harbor”
— I love that movie.
I didn’t even realize Donnie Darko was set in VA. Ugh.
My other state, MA, got The Departed. Seems about right, although certainly predictable.
My two states are Tennessee are Mississippi, and they got The Blind Side (saw it coming, but still depressing) and O Brother, Where Art Thou? (better), respectively.
And I would love for my state to have Donnie Darko.
I love that they picked up on Fight Club and Delaware.
Crabcakes and football! That’s what Maryland DOES!
Though I don’t think a lot of Wedding Crashers was actually filmed in Maryland… oh well. We always have the best TV show ever filmed (The Wire), showing off our glorious mainstay city of B-more.
I’d have had “Liberty Heights” for Maryland, but I might be the only one who remembers that movie in the first place.
I oppose your boo for Donnie Darko, I have always loved that movie and every subsequent work from Richard Kelly. But, this being Independence Day and all, I respect your right to have a difference of opinion and acknowledge your freedom to be wrong (;^P)
I didn’t predict Scarface for Floria, but now it seems obvious in hindsight. Would have been hilarious if it had been Ace Ventura :P
On an off-topic note, Despicable Me is 6-for-6 on RT with an 8.4 average. Wouldn’t it be insane if we had three animated contenders for BP nods?
Yay we get Pulp Fiction, but I’d rather have Mulholland Dr.
Hans – I saw ‘Despicable Me.’ No way is it even coming close to BP. But it’s not bad either.
My state got “To Kill A Mockingbird”. Not much else it could get aside from junk like “Sweet Home Alabama” so for that I will definitely take Gregory Peck and a creepy Robert Duvall any day.
Yay for Pulp Fiction and A streetcar named Desire!
Somebody needs to make another good movie set in Kansas. I do love The Wizard of Oz, but come on.
@Mr. F; You have “In Cold Blood.” And if memory serves, “Paper Moon” is set in Kansas too.
Oh come on! “American Splendor”!?!? Don’t get me wrong, I like the movie, and Giamatti is always excellent, but “Bye Bye Birdie” is definitely the All-Ohioan movie!
I forgot about “In Cold Blood” (and I guess “Capote” is also set in Kansas) and I’ve never seen “Paper Moon,” so that never crossed my mind. I do wish somebody would make a movie set in present-day kansas that does not go straight-to-video
I gotta say, I think it’s kind of missing the forest for the trees to call The Wizard of Oz a “Kansas movie”. It’s like calling Reservoir Dogs a movie about Madonna.
Well, not really, Zack. Since she’s just dreaming, I guess the film really IS all set in Kansas.
Oh, spoiler warning for whoever lived under a rock for the last 70 years.
I hope it’s just the extreme exhaustion from the Peachtree Road Race I ran this morning but I totally forgot about “Gone With the Wind” for Georgia. For some reason, the first one to come to mind was “Fried Green Tomatoes.”
Kind of surprised New Hampshire got “What About Bob?” instead of “On Golden Pond.”
I will second the opposition to the Donnie Darko boo…
I got There’s Something About Mary and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Weak.
i’m surprised they picked election for nebraska, given about schmidt, boys don’t cry, up in the air and others (the stand was not eligible? that one glorifies nebraska!) were available. i have lived there all my life and i know that it’s a payne but i had no idea it was set in nebraska. a lot of the choices, i noticed, could have been set in any state.
Kinda disappointed they picked Hoosiers over Breaking Away for my Indiana.
Fargo for Minnesota, obvious choice I suppose. Juno would come to mind as a runner-up (too bad they filmed it in Canada).
McAllister: “Fried Green Tomatoes” is set in Alabama. I live about fifteen miles from where it was set. Though, I’ve never seen it.
Michigan – Grosse Point Blank
Ohio – American Splendor
Yeah, Mr. F., who could have imagined that Kansas would get the Wizard of Oz? That’s not cliche or anything.
It’s a great movie, but even when I’ve gone to France and say I’m from Kansas I get, “Ah, tu as vu le Magicien d’Oz?” from everyone. At some point it might be nice to be known for something else! People assume the whole culture and ethos of Kansas centers around it…
You have it easy. I can now look forward to a lifetime of answering the question “Is it really like in ‘District 9’?” whenever I say I’m from Johannesburg.
‘Election’ for Nebraska. While I like the movie, I was surprised (and upset) that it wasn’t ‘Boys Don’t Cry’.
Interesting, even provocative in some cases… Of course, I’d make a few changes.
IA: Call me corny, but it’s all about The Music Man

My homestate, CA: Pulp Fiction is a great choice, but there’s a lot more to CA than LA. How about Milk? The Joy Luck Club? East of Eden?
Lastly, for TX, the definitive film is actually a miniseries: httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xiFpjPNNH1I
