Christopher Nolan’s “Inception” is 13 days away, though the bulk of reviews will be dropping in 51 hours. How’s that for a countdown?
The score from Hans Zimmer is exciting the same people behind the scenes who saw greatness and potential awards success in his work on “Sherlock Holmes.” It’s already available for pre-order at Amazon, but even though the album doesn’t release until July 13, you can listen to excerpts from the ominous work.
The guys at Nevermind Pop Film went to the trouble of collecting a nifty sampler widget from the tracks available in part at Amazon. It’s a dense work, very unique to Zimmer’s experiences collaborating with Nolan, but I wonder if it will have the same staying power in the awards season as the delightful melodies of “Sherlock Holmes.” Which would speak nothing to quality, mind you.
Have a listen after the jump and judge for yourself.

Some of it’s pretty good, but mostly it’s just the same old stuff.
I’m trying so hard to decipher your tone, Kris. It’s killing me to know what you thought of the movie.
I quite like it… I love some of it. Overall it’s good, but nothing really got me like Zack Hemsley’s score for the trailer. None-the-less, it’s very good, but I agree that the score for ‘Sherlock Holmes’ was better and more interesting sounding.
Holy crap! I cannot thank you enough for the mention Kris.
i found time the most emotional one while mombasa was the most entertaining one, can wait to listen to it when the movie is released
Dang! Now that is a score. Easily the best score I’ve heard this year. If the film is even half as awesome as the soundtrack, I think we’re all in for a BIG treat.
Not bad. There is some bits like Dream is Collasping that sounds too much like something from Danny Elfman, but watch as I say that now I’ll think that it kicks ass as I’m watching the film. Ones I like
Half Remembered Dream
Radical Notion
Old Souls
528491(love it)
Mombasa
One Simple Idea
Paradox
Time
I trust that we will get to know your thoughts on it too soon, Kris?
48 hours.
Fair enough.
This is the only indication i’ve seen:
devincf: At the bar with @mrbeaks. Trying to guess who hates INCEPTION from today’s screening. Guessing @kristapley.
That’s only an indication that Devin likes to drink with Jeremy and be silly on Twitter. Neither was at my screening.
Great stuff here. “Time” is my early favorite.
Same old. But I love it. Looks like “Time” is going to be the album’s masterpiece.
That’s good to hear.
Looking forward to your review Kris!
Highly doubt Tapley has a 51 hour countdown only to trash it. But, we’ll see I guess.
So we can’t even get a quick thumbs up or down? I totally understand if not, I’m just anxious to hear something.
I think it’s obvious that Kris liked it, why would he be sharing this if he didn’t like it? The question to me is: how much did he like it?
Nothing, Drew.
I’m anticipating the reviews more so than the film at this point. Its working as marketing in itself.
Pretty good, but a step down from his greater work on Gladiator, Pirates of the Caribbean, Batman, and Sherlock.
“Mombasa” and “Half Remembered Dream” sound particularly incredible. A bit outside of the norm, those two.

I have a feeling this is going to get a lot of those 3.5/4, or A-/B+ type of reviews, whether or not it goes over well with the public, and/or it becomes a cult classic down the line.
Haha, having said that, having not seen more than 2 minutes spliced together, God only knows. And Kris. :-)
As for the score, I liked it a lot. But I don’t find it instantly memorable on a few first listens.
“I have a feeling this is going to get a lot of those 3.5/4, or A-/B+ type of reviews, whether or not it goes over well with the public, and/or it becomes a cult classic down the line. ”
Boy, I hope so because that will mean that it’s something a lot more interesting than just another heist flick. As for the score, we’re only getting samplings of each track, not the whole track, and we’re not hearing these tracks in context with the movie. That can make an enormous difference in what you get out of it.
The Dark Knight meets Pirates of the Caribbean. Not really doing it for me, although the track “Time” really stands out.
So, maybe this is a naive question, but what’s it say about the film’s quality that Peter Travers writes up the film weeks before it comes out, but you and (I presume) pretty much everyone else has to wait to talk about it? Is it that he writes for a national magazine? Or is it that he’s just impatient and wanted to be first, no matter what the consensus is?
“Is it that he writes for a national magazine?”
Yes. And a pop one at that. It makes sense to go with a Rolling Stone review early, more so than a Time review, given the audience they’re aiming for.
Can’t wait to see your review Kris and listen to the podcast. But after reading Travers’ review, whom I tend to agree with on a lot of films, I’m sold. I’ll be seeing the film in IMAX midnight July 15th. Nolan has yet to disappoint and this looks no different. In fact, it’s almost as if the bigger the budget, the better he does, Memento aside. I truly believe Nolan is the new Spielberg in every sense of the title. He’s the most relevant mainstream director of our generation, with only Tarantino (though he certainly has his detractors) close behind, though he’s popular, but not necessarily mainstream. I’ve decided that now that Travers already raved about it, I’m not going to read any more reviews until I see the film myself. I want to go in with a completely clean slate. I think this is because even if you don’t really go by reviews, critical consensus or trends can color your perception of a film while watching it. Not reading any Inception reviews will help me continue my streak of knowing as little about the film as possible, and I want to keep it that way. In any case, after I see it, I will read your review Kris. :)
How can be the one composer in Hollywood who outsources his work in Hollywood be such a big deal?
(Can you imagine a major director starting a directing shop and passing on his work to others to complete and getting a pass?)
It’s certainly not due to his music alone (which is second rate nearly all the time) nor due tothe movies he scores (most of which are crap). Ironically his best work comes when he scores “smaller” character dramas (i.e. as Good As It Gets and Holiday) that show his best work, not the overrated junk like his score for “Sherlock Holmes).
Here’s a guy whose near the very top in reputation and success but is nowhere near the level of greatness that others have achieved. People who compare him to John Williams must be out of their frigging mind. It should be some sort of a cinematic sin to even mention them in the same sentence.
To clarify: I know nobody compared Zimmer to Willimas on this talkback. It’s just that I have heard that comparison too many times in the past and felt compelled to bring it up in relation to Zimmer’s reputation.
By now I have made my dislike of Zimmer apparent, I think. Stil, I feel it useful to justify it. I find the man’s attemps at “epic” orchestrations incredibly cheesy and derivative. This is especially true of his post late 90s work, I also find that, by and large, his musical ideas don’t get properly developed so it often films, that despite having a clear theme his music goes nowhere.
To be clear, I do not coniser the man to be a hack. As I’ve mentioned I think he is capable of writing decent themes for non-action films (“Rain Man” comes to mind here). The biggest source of my frastation, however, comes from his disproportionte popularity.
When the Dark Knight came out, everyone was talking about Zimmer and virtually no one, including here, was talking about James Newton Howard whom I like a heck of a lot more.
Tapley, can we expect your review right at 6PM EST or should those extremely curious about Inception look for other places?
Just pre-ordered the album on iTunes. Cant wait to see the movie in IMAX next week.
