‘Uncle Boonmee,’ Bardem, Binoche take gold at Cannes

No prizes for guessing which award here makes me happiest. I’m quite proud of having semi-called (who sees a tie coming, anyway?) Elio Germano for Best Actor — didn’t hear anybody else mentioning his name. Also got the top two prizewinners, just in reverse order. More discussion later, but for now, I have a dinner appointment to keep. The list of winners:

Palme d’Or: “Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives”

Grand Prix: “Of Gods and Men”

Best Actor: (tie) Javier Bardem, “Biutiful” and Elio Germano, “La Nostra Vita”

Best Actress: Juliette Binoche, “Certified Copy”

Best Screenplay: Lee Chang-dong, “Poetry”

Best Director: Mathieu Amalric, “On Tour”

Jury Prize: “A Screaming Man”

Camera d’Or: “Año Bisiesto,” Michael Rowe

Best Short Film: “Chienne d’Histoire”

    Loyal, yes, it seems that

    1) Binoche has both an Academy award and a Cannes award

    and

    2) Guy will eat!!

Binoche not only has and Oscar and Cannes. With the Cannes win she completes the festival triple crown: Venice for Trois Couleurs: Bleu, Berlin for The English Patient and now Cannes.

By the reaction Uncle Boonmee was clearly an extremely popular choice. Everybody seems very happy with it winning. France might now submit Of Gods and Men which has the important air about it. And Binoche is really quite the star, beautiful and graceful and did bring up Panahi. She’s definitely not going to other plaudits after this.

I would say Burton acquits himself well with a well liked choice of winners and a truly bold choice for the Palm.

Yay Juliette Binoche! So glad she won and cannot wait for Certified Copy to come out. I don’t really have any interest in any of the other films (that won) but I will probably end up seeing Biutiful, On Tour, and Uncle Boonmee eventually. Sorta a lackluster set of films but Guy’s coverage was anything but lackluster. So glad you are getting to eat, tell the waiter you are pregnant and are eating for two!

Thanks for kicking ass with your coverage, Guy. Well done.

    A Screaming Man? Weird.

Germano? Also pretty weird. I heard more good things about Xueqi in Chongqing Blues.

Binoche’s win is not altogether surprising and only gets me more excited for the film – although I really did think Jung-hee had it in the bag.

Amalric, and Another Year walks away with nothing? Go figure.

Really enjoyed your coverage, Guy. Thanks.

Juliette Binoche is incredibly overrated. That aside, I’m a little surprised that “Another Year” failed to get any prizes.

This won’t change the films potential Oscar prospects though.

    An interesting set of winners.

Guy, thanks for your terrific coverage. It’s been a pleasure reading it.

Am I the only one that finds that title absolutely ridiculous (Uncle Boonmee…)?

Oh yeah, and good for Thai Joe. One of my favourite directors; I’m bursting at the seams to watch Uncle Boonmee.

English: I find the title slightly precious, I admit. And “Uncle Boonmee Recalls His Past Lives” would at least sound a little less clunky.

Anyway, I shouldn’t keep harping on the film. Onward!

First of all great coverage Guy but I must not be the only one who now wants to send you food parcels.

On the prizes, have to say I expected the Manville to win Best Actress and this would start her Oscar campaign but I am equally glad that Binoche won. I have to say that I was rather suprised by Amalric winning best director given the universal average reviews.

    “Juliette Binoche is incredibly overrated.”

She is underrated, under-appreciated, and damn near forgotten stateside.

    Guy,
Another note of appreciation for your effort in covering as many bases as possible through the fest. This was my first year missed in 8, but you had me feeling very connected indeed.

Urgent question: where did you eat at the end, and how was it?

    cheers,

    Via Collins.

Collins: At the ever-fantastic Lahore Kebab House in East London — a hearty curry fix. Don’t you worry ’bout me!

Thank you (and everyone else) for the kind words … glad you enjoyed the coverage.

Yes, excellent coverage of the fest (the only coverage I was really following). Great stuff!

So far, the most I’m looking forward the most this year are the ones that were presented at Cannes: “Uncle Boonmee”, “Biutiful”, “La Nostra Vita”, “On Tour”, “Certified Copy”.

I’m only anticipating “Inception” from the movies with Oscar buzz so far.

“La Nostra Vita” is nothing to look forward to, believe me — even if I did see that Best Actor award coming. Major disappointment after Luchetti’s last film.

Why only the winners? Would you be looking forward to “Another Year” if it had taken an award? ;)

Is it just me that can’t find it, or why isn’t Incontention covering the Semaine de la critique? It might not be the main competition, but if you want a pointer on which documentary feature will end up in the oscar race, Danish Janus Metz won the side competition / critics award with his Afghanistan-war – danish soldier portrait documentary, Armadillo.

It’s the first documentary to ever win that competition, and the the film has had almost near perfect reviews in international press, with many critics putting it up there and comparing it to “The Hurt Locker” in terms of it being a relevant and essential comment on the war, and what it does to the soldiers fighting it.
