Hey, remember when an unheralded indie called “Get Low” debuted to standing ovations at Toronto last September? And remember the accompanying talk that Robert Duvall’s second Oscar could be in the bag? And remember when all such talk died as soon as the movie was pushed back to 2010? Such is the give-and-take nature of the festival circuit.
Anyway, it’s baaaaaack. And so, I suspect, will be the Duvall Oscar talk. The trailer sets my Twee Alarm ringing something fierce, but others seem impressed.

I wish this film would go away. It’s hard to imagine anyone actually being engaged or impressed while watching or thinking back on it.
Nathaniel and Nick didn’t like it and though their opinion is not God’s law (or Law, whatever), combined with the “nothing” feeling I got from the film, I don’t think I’ll like it.
And although I think DuVall will probably get nominated, I have a feeling Firth will win for that movie I had know idea about before Nathaniel made his predictions.
*I got from the TRAILER
I *still* firmly believe that Bill Murray is currently the front-runner for Best Supporting Actor.
Well, Ed Harris surely has a good chance to win if he goes supporting in The Way Back
This role looks a bit too light for Murray to win with it, however good he may be. A nomination, I could see, especially if voters see the film for Duvall – it worked for Maggie Gyllenhaal, right?
Robert Duvall acting Cuh-Razy, Sissy Spacek looking amazing, and Bill Murray being… Bill Murrah… Ummm, YES PLEASE!
*I meant to say Bill Murray being Bill Murray
Sissy Spacek is one of my favourite actresses of all time, but how exactly does she look “amazing” in this trailer?
I saw this at TIFF and championed Duvall’s performance moments after seeing the picture — I stand by that — he is extraordinary in the movie and will get nominated and might win, depending on Bridges in “True Grit” — Duvall is at his best in these Southern tales that feel like they came from the pen of Horton Foote — and crazy? Nope, not even close…just eccentric — and yes Murray is terrific and good land in the supporting category — seeing the two of them in a film together was surreal, but I will be damned if it was not entertaining to watch them on screen together — Duvall dominates.
Bill Murray winning an Oscar would be the best move in a long time. The man deserves an apology for their glossing over his last twelve or so years of fine dramatic work.
Keep in mind, my feelings have nothing to do with my opinions on the performance itself (of which I’ve seen only pre-release clips), but rather a SERIOUS Robin Williams/Morgan Freeman/Alan Arkin “he’s overdue and it’s an Oscar-friendly character” vibe.
Feel free to throw this prediction back at my face if it all goes south.
I think you could be right, Robert. After all, Bullock/Bridges/Winslet were all very recent Lifetime Achievement Awards. He has gotten close with Lost in Translation, so it could very well happen.
Did that make anyone else feel really sorry for Nothing Winner Lucas Black?
This trailer really didn’t do anything for me except confirm what Robert previously said in the comments – that Murray has a real shot here.
Other than that, nothing really jumped out at me. Who knows, though, maybe that’s a good thing? It will keep expectations at a reasonable level.
“I wish this film would go away. It’s hard to imagine anyone actually being engaged or impressed while watching or thinking back on it.”
AMEN. This movie is middle-of-the-road pap. I honestly don’t understand how anyone is getting enthused over it.
Duvall does boring, cliched “grizzled” schtick, and then **SPOILER** cries.
Oscar!!!!
to Guy – I meant literally LOOKING amazing. I love her as an actress and I don’t care if people question my sanity but I think she is gorgeous and looks even better as she has aged. So I literally think she looks good with the old fashioned clothing and styling, I think it makes her look beautiful. But I don’t question that she will give a really good performance b/c seriously when has she not?
Oh, I see. Fair enough.
Saw it at SXSW Film Festival. Murray wins Best Supporting Actor for his performance in this.
I thought the trailer was fantastic.
Not making any predictions until I see the film. But it’s certainly a film of interest. Dunno much about the director though. And I hate the music in the trailer and the way it’s cut. What everyone is really commenting on here is the marketing, not the movie. Too early to tell.
Hey Rob, others, most of us mere mortals don’t get to see these movies until they actually come out, maybe we’re reserving judgment or even enthused based on the talented involved…
Dean: The reason you don’t know much about the director is that this is his debut feature — though you might recall he won an Oscar for his (quite good) short “Two Soldiers.”
Sissy Spacek most certainly does look amazing. An object lesson in the benefits of avoiding Botox and the surgeon’s knife.
