Every year AMC Theatres puts together a showcase of the five films nominated for Best Picture. I’ve been very curious to see how the chain will handle matters this year, given the small matter of, well, 10 films being nominated rather than five.
Today AMC has announced its plan. The showcase will be divided among the back-to-back weekends of February 27 and March 6. “Avatar” has been announced as one of the films set to play the first weekend, but fans can vote on the other four via an online poll at AMCEntertainment.com/BPS. That poll closes at midnight Sunday night and the schedule will be revealed Monday, February 7.
Passes for the showcases will be available at the same website on Friday, February 12. The online price for the package is $60.00. Some notes of interest from the press release after the jump.
AMC Theatres® (AMC), a leading theatrical exhibition and entertainment company, is proud to continue its AMC Best Picture ShowcaseSM program offering guests the rare opportunity to experience the 10 films nominated by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for “Best Picture” at more than 100 theatres in 46 markets (theatre list available at www.AMCEntertainment.com/BPS).
With the doubling of nominated films in 2010, this year‟s program will be divided among back-to-back weekends, Saturday, Feb. 27 and Saturday, March 6…
New this year, guests will be invited to select the films to join box office smash hit “Avatar” (in 3D*) the first weekend of the Showcase via an online poll. This feature allows guests the unprecedented opportunity to help design the program’s show schedule for the first time.
As in previous years, with the purchase of a pass, attendees receive a large popcorn with unlimited refills and a souvenir lanyard, which will feature artwork from the 10 nominated films and will give guests the freedom to come and go throughout the event.

I’d keep District 9 away from Avatar. For Avatar’s sake. Although they do make a fascinating double bill.
I make my wife do this every year so she can catch up. Funny thing is she actually loves it.
I would like to mix up the Best Picture nominees so that not all of the fanboy/girl type of movies are in one weekend thereby making one showing more “popular” than the other. With that said…
First weekend: The Blind Side, A Serious Man, Precious, Up and Avatar.
Second weekend: Up in the Air, The Hurt Locker, An Education, Inglourious Basterds, District 9.
Considering a weekday price at my AMC is less than 5 dollars, this is a little pricey. Maybe I would do it if I had not seen so many of the nominees already. Although, it is so very tempting to see The Hurt Locker and Inglourious Basterds on the big screen again.
Interesting that despite the expanded field, this is the first year in a long time that I’ve seen every nominated film before the ceremony. So for the first time in a while this nominee’s showcase does nothing for me.
Funny thing is, the film with the highest amount of votes right now is Precious. I never would have predicted that.
I really want to see Avatar and The Hurt Locker in the same day. Really get down to the nitty gritty and compare the two. See if one is really that much better than the other.
Did anyone else notice the fine print that basically said that AMC can change the lineup from what the votes say if they feel like it? Why even bother?
It’s $40 at the Box Office if you have a MovieWatcher card. I can’t wait for this. I voted for the first Saturday, Precious, The Hurt Locker, An Education and Up (hoping that will be in 3D too if it gets voted into the first weekend).
I go to this every year and it is such a blast! I am so glad they aren’t backing out of it this year. I made a pact with a friend of mine that no matter where we are in the country, we would come back for this. Definitely worth checking out!
I want the first weekend to be Avatar, An Education, District 9, Up, and Blind Side. That way I wont have to see Avatar/Blind side again (films I didn’t like) or Precious, Up, or An Education again (films I enjoyed but don’t need to spend 30 bucks on again.)
In terms of what the second weekend would then be: A Serious Man, Inglourious Basterds, The Hurt Locker, Up In The Air, and District 9 – this would be the best time I ever had at the theater. Im hoping it turns out this way.
I meant to include Precious, not District 9 on my first day list, not that it matters, just correcting the inconsistency.
This looks to be pretty much what it’ll be:
Feb. 27: Avatar, The Blind Side, Inglourious Basterds, Up in the Air, Precious
Mar. 6: The Hurt Locker, Up, A Serious Man, District 9, An Education
Nice to know I’ll be able to save some money, since all three of the “eh” movies are in the first weekend.
Wow, judging by the current poll results people still are just aren’t buying “The Hurt Locker”.
Ouch.
Or people would just rather not see it with three mediocre movies.
I know for a fact that I voted for The Blind Side and Precious to keep them OUT of that second weekend.
I’d just like to see Avatar in 3D. I wonder if its possible?
Ditto on Avatar 3d only.
