Makeup bake-off leaves seven

Christopher Plummer in The Imaginarium of Doctor ParnassusVia AMPAS press release, the final group includes:

“District 9”
“Il Divo”
“The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus”
“Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian”
“The Road”
“Star Trek”
“The Young Victoria”

Well, there was always one spot in flux for me here and most recently I was giving it to “Cirque du Freak” for some great work by a veteran of the branch.  If I were to hazard a guess as to which of these gets it, I guess I’d say “Parnassus,” its one and only nomination.  There is some good work in “Il Divo,” too (from the artist who brought the natives of “Apocalypto” to prosthetic life), so maybe that could come around.  Or “The Road.” The rest seem like non-starters to me.

District 9, The Road & Star Trek will be the nominees. If they go traditional it will be Parnassus over The Road.

“Il Divo” is a VERY inspired pick. Good on them.

I must admit, the possibility of that film being an Oscar nominee in any capacity makes me happy.

Il Divo had some fantastic make-up work. I’m glad it’s recognized and believe that it will get in the top 3 if it made it so far… But I really don’t understand why they ignored Drag Me to Hell and Inglourious Basterds…

I’m with Pablo (Col). “District 9,” “The Road,” and “Star Trek,” with “District 9” winning.

I think I’d be content if the makeup award was relegated to one yearly winner that is announced ahead of the awards, like the honorary Oscars and such.

There really isn’t enough quality or quantity in this category anymore that there needs to be three nominees. Like Star Trek, yeah, you get pointy Vulcan ears and a green girl, neither of which anything revolutionary or Oscar-worthy, yet that’s one of the three I’m predicting!

District 9 is the only film worthy of Oscar’s attention out of these.

Honestly, I think Star Trek is probably the best contender here. I don’t understand this notion that makeup has to be big and flashy in order to be recognized, like so many other tech categories. Last year, The Dark Knight was nominated, with the only notable makeup job being The Joker. The impact of that work, however, resonated throughout the film. Same with Star Trek. The most obvious makeup jobs are, of course, the Romulans and the Vulcans, but scattered throughout the film are background aliens and the like that definitely help give the film a sense of being in this intergalactic world.

I’m hoping that District 9 takes it all the way in this category.

I have to parrot Bryan here. Biiiiiiiig fail not shortlisting Drag Me To Hell.

District 9 takes this in a fucking walk.

so does Watchmen get zero play because it didnt do well? like even if it has some achievements in other categories. like I get people didn’t like it. but i feel like it did some things right in the technical and makeup categories.
