Um, okay.  So the list of nominations for the Washington D.C. Good winners, but the Best Ensemble win for “The Hurt Locker” confuses me.

Cool! When will the N.Y and L.A film critics announce their awards?

bigelow and up in the air seem like theyve already won, hope its not that easy of a season

nice to see waltz getting more acclaim and the best original screenplay win was certainly deserved, but so would have been a serious man or up

Sidibe and Mulligan are tied for the win. I’m afraid Streep will have to settle for a nom and maybe a GG win.

Mo’Nique starts to gain the attention of the critics as well as Waltz.

Clooney ties with Freeman for the win.

The film, director, and acting wins are kind of looking like that’s how the whole season will shape up.

Haha Inglourious Basterds for Original Screenplay. I wonder if that’ll catch on. And can Clooney really win another Oscar so soon? Can’t wait to see Up in the Air…

Hurt Locker should have taken Original Screenplay. If it’s not Renner, Clooney’s a fine substitute.

Pretty much what I had in mind as the winners.
I wasn’t able to watch “Up in the Air” today. Next week hopefully. Can’t wait.

Looking at their site they listed the nominations as having been announced on the 5th, yesterday, but maybe no one knew/noticed until today.. Still doesn’t explain why the winners came out today and not tomorrow like it did say though.

Hard to argue with their picks, but a little spice wouldn’t have hurt. Even the NBR had more quirky choices than this.

What kind of Mickey Mouse outfit are they?

    Anyway, solid if uninspired selections.

I think the Oscar is Bigelow’s, despite how I feel about the film.

    A. they get to reward the film when it could be shut out completely.
    B. she’s a she.
    C. Reitman would tie as the youngest Best Director winner ever. The other person was Norman Taurog, also 32, in 1930. I mean, come on.
    D. she’s paid her dues.
    E. when will the perfect storm of a critically acclaimed and macho film directed by a woman happen again?

    Let me just say.
If Carey Mulligan wins an Oscar, I will not be happy. Sure she was okay. But there are still plenty of films i haven’t seen yet, and I could think of 6 or 7 better performances than hers.

I would be so content with UITA sweeping Best Pic, Best Dir, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress for Kendrick and Best Adapted Screenplay. What a beautiful fucking film.

For best actress, I’d love to see Cornish get in for a nom, but I’d be happy with Mulligan or Sidibe. Best Supporting Actor, Waltz or Plummer.

Loyal, I did a little research and found the following:

Norman Taurog- 32 years, 8 months, 18 days
    (As Of Oscar Night: 11/10/1931)

Jason Reitman- 32 years, 4 months, 16 days
    (As Of Oscar Night: 03/07/2010)

Reitman would edge Taurog by 4 months and 2 days if he wins.

I’ve got a strong feeling that Kathryn Bigelow will be winning Best Director this year.

  20. The Other James D. Avatar

    That was quite a rush-job.

That being said, I wonder if/when we’ll see Bridges/Firth win some already. But if Clooney wins a ton, it doesn’t mean that much. He did win a slew for “Michael Clayton” after all.

Hooray for Bigelow. Please let that continue!

Oh, and Mulligan….The more I ruminate on her performance, the more I admire it.

I really don’t think Mulligan is going to win. This’ll probably be a similar situation to last year when Hathaway was taking most awards, then of course Winslet came out at the end and won for a performance that had barely won anywhere else (and when it did it was in the wrong category).

Streep is taking this one. And deservedly so, for the best lead female performance of the year.

I don’t understand how they picked the actress winner. Sidibe beat Mulligan in the breakthrough category and then Mulligan beats her in the actress category; that’s rather odd.

The lafc and nyfc will throw a much needed wrench into these. Look out for jeff bridges and ‘a single man’ and ‘a serious man’ (especially with new york) to pick up some noms for cast, screenplays and maybe even picture. That being said, up in the air has got this thing in the bag. And deservedly so. Done deal.

And the point of the nominations were?

Still can’t make my mind up if Mulligan is this year’s Hathaway or whether that is wishful thinking on my part as to be honest the more, I think about her performance, the more I do think it is ‘male critic hype’.

I certainly am not as high on Up in the Air as everyone is. Then again the Academy loved Juno a lot more than I did as well.

Well, if Up in the Air really does have best pic in the bag, then Bigelow won’t be getting a free pass. UitA doesn’t have that many categories it can win, Reitman has momentum from Juno, and “youngest best director ever” is almost as good a story as “first female best director”.

I can’t imagine that the overwhelming favorite for best pic won’t be threatening to bring its director along for the ride. That just doesn’t make sense.

That said, I do think Bigelow is going to win. She HAS paid her dues, and this opportunity doesn’t come along everyday. Still, if UitA is a mortal lock for best pic by the time winners announced, then best director will surely be suspenseful.

Streep won the DC Critic’s Award last year for Doubt. This has no bearing on the Oscars. It’s Complicated will help Streep, not hurt her.

    LMAO.

Bigelow is not winning the Oscar.

AMPAS nominated Reitman for Juno, and the only other groups who recognized him that entire year were the Chicago critics and the Indie Spirits.

The Academy obviously likes Reitman. And it’s easier for them to give it to another white guy who happens to be young than a woman or a black guy yet. Sad but true.

Reitman deserves very strong consideration on his own merits, gender not an issue. But we’ve seen with Denzel Washington and Halle Berry that the Academy can be pressured, and one can’t help reading Forest Whitaker and Jamie Fox as being benefited, not hurt, by social politics. All four Oscars were for great work. But the Academy isn’t indifferent to pressure and they’re sure to look extra carefully at Bigelow’s candidacy.

  40. M.Harris Avatar

“And it’s easier for them to give it to another white guy who happens to be young than a woman or a black guy yet.”

Dennis, give the Academy a little credit. I think that they’ve moved past the race thing. And you used the word “yet.” Have you paid any attention to the recent nominees in winners who were black? With wins and nominations for people like Terrance Howard, Forest Whitaker and Jennifer Hudson.

In my opionion, if Reitmen wins. It will be because of the quality of his directing. Same goes for Bigelow. Sure it’s a novel thing to have a woman directing a cast full of men. But a win for her won’t be predicated on the fact that she is a woman.

Alright!!! Another Up in the Air win. Good choices overall Clooney is defently good and screenplay makes sense. I haven’t seen Hurt Locker, but Waltz’s win is a good sign and hope to see that trend continue.

  42. the other mike Avatar

great points M . Harris, the Academy has no problems awarding african americans and if precious does not win it wont be because of racism.

I would like 2 see Katheryn win cause yes she is a female, byt she actually made the best film of the year like i said, way better than Up In The Air and as a matter of fact, her competition is dwindling as we see all the players.

I am just shocked about Clooney again! I really didn’t expect this from the critics! And I agree, ric, the NY critics should shakes things up a bit. I really will be shocked if Clooney takes NY but, I think, LA seems very possible now.

Somebody help me – when was the last time a British ingenue took the Oscar for Best Actress in her first major motion picture released in America? Julie Christie? Do some of you really think they’re going to give it to Mulligan? After Cotillard 2 years ago and Winslet last year? Really?!

I honestly think Sidibe has a better chance with the academy than Mulligan but I’ve certainly been wrong before.

So it seems the tide is changing and I’m seeing Bullock show up on more on more predictions. I happen to be a fan but being nominated over Cornish seems like a real shame. When I finally see BLIND SIDE maybe I’ll feel differently.

And INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS is really beginning to look like a contender. Huh.

PLUS – I believe Winslet was probably the only actress in the world who could have won over Streep last year. Winslet had all those nominations with no wins and she is so deserving and she is so respected…

But people aren’t even pretending anymore – many are simply stating that Streep is the greatest living American actress.

Remember, people were already feeling a little awkward last year about Streep waiting so long for another Oscar and now it would be her 16th nomination (!) PLUS she has yet another $100 million movie on her resume (and JULIE & JULIA could be considered the LEAST likely of all her blockbusters over the past few years).

And 3 of the likely BA nominees will truthfully be able to say that the nomination will be reward enough – a very young British actress in her first major motion picture gets nominated – a very inexperienced, natural actress in her first major motion picture gets nominated – a very popular but not widely regarded as a “serious” actress gets nominated – I mean, even if you weren’t particularly fond of Streep, I think it would be difficult NOT to give her the award this year – I mean, come on!!

Sure they adore Mirren but I don’t get the sense that THE LAST STATION is so fantastic that people are dying to reward her with more than giving her her 4th nomination SO…

I really am fascinated to hear why people don’t think this is finally Meryl’s year.

I get what you’re saying about Streep, billybil. It’s just that it’s a fluffier role and that doesn’t always fly with the Academy. If she were supporting, she’d be a cinch! But since she’s not, it’s between Mulligan and Sidibe.

To be honest, I’m rooting for Sidibe even though I haven’t seen Precious yet. Only because I’d like for Halle Berry not to be the ONLY black actress to win in lead.

P.S. I left you a message in the NBR thread from the other day =P.

***It’s just that it’s a fluffier role and that doesn’t always fly with the Academy.***

Oh please. So why did Helen Hunt win for “As Good as it Gets?” Gwyneth Paltrow the very next year for “Shakespeare in Love?” This is a desperate, sorry excuse and is simply untrue. And we’re not just talking about any actress here… we’re talking about MERYL STREEP. Playing a REAL PERSON. In a BRILLIANT, WIDELY ACCLAIMED performance. Mulligan and Sidibe are going to have to be thankful for even being nominated.

  47. The Other James D. Avatar

You’re a fantard. But I’ll process your comments anyway.

Those examples are both ’90s performances, for one thing. Secondly, you can’t just ignore the momentum Sidibe and Mulligan have. They are not automatic also-rans. It’s this same sort of rudimentary thinking people had last year. And similar thinking in 2007, assuming Blanchett would beat Swinton (tsk).

For the record, I loved Streep in the role, and wouldn’t mind it if she won. But to discount the others this early is foolish. Streep is not a lock for the win whatsoever yet. And if Mulligan/Sidibe emerge victorious, it would not be considered an upset yet either. Technically speaking, Mulligan is the frontrunner thus far. We’ll see how next week’s critics awards impact that in order to further assess just how shit’s gonna go down this season. Until then though, this is all just jabberwocky.

Having just seen Precious, I can’t ever recall having quite this reaction to any other film. It was incredible, and the performances astounding, but I genuinely can’t see the old gentlmens club embracing it in any capacity. It will be nominated for something, but not all it deserves as this takes subject matter to the absolute next level.

  49. billybil Avatar

    Other James D – I’ve responded elsewhere.

And keep in mind the momentum Hathaway had last year at this time.

I like jabberwocky as long as it supports this Streep fantard’s dreams.
