The song “Cinema Italiano,” by the way, is one of the film’s original compositions vying for Oscar glory. Based on this snippet, I think some melody wouldn’t have gone amiss. But that’s me.

I’m pleasantly surprised. Just a shame Kate Hudson is in the movie.
Fantastic trailer!!!!!!!!
won’t be shocked if she sneaks into supporting actress. Weinstein knows what he’s doing.
Yes, Kate Hudson can not sing, one of the problems with the film.
Not joking: unless this is one of a series of trailers, I feel like this could cost the film millions of box office dollars, simply for making it look like the movie’s main star is Kate Hudson.
I enjoyed it.
But, I’d like to maybe hear Daniel Day-Lewis speak in one of these trailers….or sing!
I didn’t find it good… mainly because I don’t like the setup of the Kate Hudson sequence, I wasn’t into the song, the dance, the acting, the set. Maybe it will be better in conjunction with the entire film rather than as a preview.
Okay, is it too much to ask that, if you’re going to place a song “Cinema Italiano” in a film ostensibly about Italians, that you the work “cinema” be pronounced all’Italiano??? Rhymes with “chin,” not “sin”…
There is an italian segment in the song and she does say it like “Chinema”, i have 2 of the 3 new songs. I think Kate sounds very good, way different than I expected. Marion Cotillard’s new song though is crazy good if you ask me (especially lyrically)
“Crazy Heart” trailer is on Quicktime now.
That sucked. Looks like Lindsay Lohan’s “Rumors” video. Actually, it looks like Hudson took a role written for Lohan.
And at the end it sounds like she’s yelling “Civin me an enema! Giving me an enema!”.
Amazinggggggggggggg!!!
Gotta love the polarizing reactions:
Awful! Amazing!
I think the trailer is fine, gets me excited to see the movie.
Loved the trailer and absolutely love the song, I doubt Hudson will get an Oscar nod but the song could do quite well.
I really liked it. There is also a fabulous diva shot of Nicole Kidman somewhere in the middle.
I agree about the semi-lack of a melody beginning, but now I can’t get that chorus and hook out of my head.
I think it would be great if they did a series of trailers highlighting each of the Nine ladies. Hell, if Harry fricking Potter can have a million trailers…..
Wasn’t a fan of the song. Hudson’s voice was perfectly fine, the song was just unbearably lame. Not a great trailer altogether.
The “Crazy Heart” trailer, however, is really good. Extremely excited for that movie. Trailer is up at Apple.
Is there a poster for this movie yet?
Actually I think her singing is better than Renee Zellweger’s was in “Chicago.” I don’t think the film’s fate will be decided on her contributions. Perhaps in spite of them.
Holy Christ is that song bad. Someone explain to me at the incessant yelling of “Guido” about half-way through?
I completely forgot Anthony Minghella co-wrote the screenplay. Interesting.
What makes us assume that it’s Kate singing?
The song is what bothers me, not Hudson.
I hope Marion Cotillard’s original song gets in. It fits more with the musical. In my opinion.
maury yeston’s strength as a composer, i think, has always been his gift for creative and emotional melodies. the original Nine score is chock-full of gorgeous ones. sadly, this song is an exception. at least kate sounds ok.
Because they cast her because they believed she could sing. And it’s Rob Marshall for peet’s sake.
I think the song is good, but not great. It’s missing something, almost like it’s missing a melody and thats the backing track. Hudson’s voice is fine though and the dancing and scene look amazing. And it’s catchy, but I can’t see it getting an oscar nom, Take It All probably as a better chance.
But the trailer is fantastic! Be italian works better as music, but God, the film looks beautiful. If this doesn’t win Cinematography, Art Direction & Costumes I’ll be shocked. This film looks fantastic. Daniel Day Lewis seems to have nailed the role….and the women……drool.
Also, did the Crazy Heart trailer remind anyone of The Wrestler? And why no mention of Colin Farrell?
Yes, Andy, Crazy Heart totally had The Wrestler feel going on.
I change my vote on the sidebar poll to ‘Nine’.
Ick. Horrible lyrics, but surprised by Kate Hudson–she can hold a note. (On the other hand, it’s still Kate Hudson… so, meh)
And holy crap!: those shots of Cruz are quite intriguing.
Well I can’t get the tune out of my head so that speaks to something.
That song sucked.
its 2 easy 2 hate on this, we should give the film a chance but i guess Guy has already decided he is gonna hate it.
Mike: No, I’m looking forward to the film like crazy. I just don’t like what I’ve heard of this particular song. Relax.
1. I like this. She can carry a tune, even if it’s not on the level of some of her co-stars, but that’s not what the song requires. And the song itself is catchy. I want some variation, not the same big shownumber over and over again in some 2-hour diva-off that happens to also star DDL.
2. This trailer is likeley meant for a specific audience, i.e. not us. They’ve already warmed up a large audience for this, and will continue to do so, but like Avatar and its recent Nickelodeon-trailer, only this one’s for the kids 18-25. You don’t warm them up for a movie by telling em it’s got the guy from There Will Be Blood and the girl from La Mome, and the other one from all those Spanish films etc. You warm them up by showing a happy song from the girl from How to lose a guy in Ten Days, and Skeleton Key, and Fool’s Gold. You know… movies they’ve seen.
In ‘8 1/2′ Guido was Italian because it was an Italian film, and he was a surrogate for Fellini, and that was it.
In’Nine’ everyone is constantly shouting about how Italian they are.
Totally agree, Erik, the first trailer was drawing for a more mature audience, and this one is to bring in the younger crowd. It’s all a marketing ploy.
I think Kate Hudson sings this very well, however, and it’s a great trailer…
why does Rob Marshall films featuring costumes by Dion Beebe are never sexy? they look like awful amateur broadway production.
Some people here don’t seem to understand that this is a promo for Middle America, who is patriotic and American-centered therefore they want to see a nice American girl in an American film, and this nice girl is Kate Hudson, that’s why she’s promoting it as if she were the main star.
She’s a bigger draw in the US than the other actresses in this film. Yet no one really knows her outside the US.
This clip won’t be shown in Europe, where they will have no problem making money with the most popular European actresses being in it
Oh, and that shot of Nicole Kidman is just wow
“Yet no one really knows her outside the US.”
Simply not true.
“In ‘8 1/2′ Guido was Italian because it was an Italian film, and he was a surrogate for Fellini, and that was it.

Heartily seconded.
I cannot wait for this film, although like Guy this particular song is not my favorite. I actually really liked the musical (I have only heard the music not actually seen it) so I am really excited to see how the songs are performed by the rest of the cast, especially Daniel Day Lewis (can he sing? I can’t wait to find out…) The visuals are fascinating to me though in this trailer to say the least.
I don’t get the Kate Hudson hatred. Sure, she’s done a bunch of incredibly stupid movies, but she CAN act. And not all of her movies are dumb. (I’m particularly a fan of her, and of everybody else, in “About Adam”.)
However, I can’t say I’m really looking forward to this movie, so if people are deterred from going ga-ga over it because of Kate Hudson, be my guest.
I don’t know if it’s just compressed sound-wise but Hudson sounds auto-tuned. Not like T-Pain or Kanye but still auto-tuned.
rafta@ your sentence made absolutley no sense. And Dion Beebe is the cinematographer….
This film looks brillinat, in my opinion and people seem to be really enjoying it. I don’t mind Hudson being in the film, or the song.
December 25th, here I come :)
@jess: As someone who is from “middle America,” my main interest in Nine is Marshall, Day-Lewis, Cruz and Cotillard. Not Hudson. And you’d think if they were marketing to people who want to see an American film the song wouldn’t be half in another language.
Just sayin’.
ach. this is about as ‘italiano’ as fettucine alfredo. (if you like this you probably need to look that up).
kate’s voice is fine, but the song doesn’t fit her :|
