I’m on my way out the door and so I can’t fully comment on the just announced list of Gotham Award nominees (which, along with the trickling-in list of Hollywood Film Fest winners, really is making this seem like an Oscar season all of a sudden, no?)  But here they are.  A handful of other awards/honors were announced a few weeks back.

I’m glad “Sugar” got something, even if it is a lone nomination in the ensemble field.  “The Hurt Locker” cleaned up with nominations across the board.  “Big Fan” did really well, too.  Your thoughts?

    where’s Precious?

With Bigelow picking up the Career Achievement Award as well, I guess the night will belong to The Hurt Locker.

Yeah! No Precious! And Sidibe can be considered a real Breakthrough, not like Jeremy Renner or Ben Foster who had a pretty solid career behind them.

Does this “The Maid” might have a chance for something out fo the blue? It has very strong reviews and now this nomination (I know it’s not much but still…).

Jesus, what happened to the Gothams this year? Are they under new management? Big Fan? Amreeka?! Very, very disappointing.

Jim: Pete Hammond has been high on the leading actress performance in that for a while. So maybe that.

Yeiks! Ben Foster coulda be a great contender
also Samantha Morton & Woody Harrelson in the supporting categories.
The Messenger seems to be the Frozen River of this year.

I always expected Hurt Locker to clean up at awards here and my guess is it will be the only film mentioned to get oscar attention beyond perhaps A Serious Man in screenplay (I’m not sold on its BP chances but maybe I’m being a bit biased since I was mixed on the film’s quality overall) and the documentaries.

Renner’s stock continues to rise. Seriously could fill the perennial indie acting slot.

I’m surprised Sophie Barthes wasn’t a breakthrough director for “Cold Souls”, given the good reviews (just to have a woman in the mix).

And “Amreeka” does seem a bit random; that spot probably should belong to “The Messenger”. I haven’t seen “Big Fan”, but that got good reviews, so I don’t see any issue there.

Oh well, great for Foster, Saavedra, and of course, “The Hurt Locker”!

P.S. Actually, “Goodbye Solo” should be a Best Feature nominee….That’s a little disturbing. Oh well. Still, I like the group of films overall. Well done.

Ben Foster for breakout actor? He’s broken out already.

    Where’s Sharlto Copley from District 9 ??
HE’S THE Breakthrough Actor OF THE YEAR!!

(Happy to see a Chilean actress there anyway… VIVA CHILE!!)

Haha, “The Maid” isn’t getting anywhere close to Oscar. Especially since it wasn’t chosen for the only remotely possible category (foreign language film). Too weird and dark (as in dark comedy) for Oscar.

I know… Chile choose “Dawson 10” as their representant for this edition (and I’m thinking that maybe it was a mistake)

I’m very disappointed that Goodbye Solo wasn’t mentioned for Best Feature. But I’m very glad that Souleymane Sy Savane was recognized as he was magnificent in the film. He’s the true breakout performer of the year!
