Robert Downey Jr.’s ‘Dark’ diss

Written by

Robert Downey Jr. at the premiere of Zodiac in February 2007

My whole thing is that that I saw ‘The Dark Knight’. I feel like I’m dumb because I feel like I don’t get how many things that are so smart. It’s like a Ferrari engine of storytelling and script writing and I’m like, ‘That’s not my idea of what I want to see in a movie.’ I loved ‘The Prestige’ but didn’t understand ‘The Dark Knight’. Didn’t get it, still can’t tell you what happened in the movie, what happened to the character and in the end they need him to be a bad guy. I’m like, ‘I get it. This is so high brow and so f–king smart, I clearly need a college education to understand this movie.’ You know what? F-ck DC comics. That’s all I have to say and that’s where I’m really coming from.

Well…

Um…the Dark Knight has made over $440 million and counting. Now, unless the majority of these people that paid for that don’t care if they don’t understand the movie, and for some reasons I highly doubt that, Robert Downey Jr. is in the vast, “dumb” minority. I had no problem understanding it myself. And though I was thoroughly entertained by it, I do expect a movie to teach us at least something. If Robert Downey Jr. feels in anyway threatened (maybe because Iron Man is no longer #1) let him come up with a better argument than this. The Dark Knight is not Shakespeare, so if you can’t understand it, well, too bad.
And that last insult was just unnecessary.

I’m under the impression that he was joking.

I am too, Dan. Hence my brisk reaction.

Yeah, he’s joking. He’s Robert Downey, Jr. Come on.

It’s satire but with an element of truth. Everyone is seeing it multiple times just because it is so confusing. And I mean that in a good way.

If he was joking then brilliant. He has always been a satirical guy when being interviewed (wonder if he’s like that in real life or if that’s an act:P).

If he’s being sincere my respect for him has just dropped about 10%:P

It’s Robert Downey, Jr… if there was video of this quote we’d all be laughing hysterically at his very clever satirical humor. The man is extremely articulate and intelligent and if he wasn’t he certainly isn’t dumb enough to bad mouth another Comic film knowing that it would hurt his own reputation and box office.

Yeah “joking”, just in a year where his #1 film happened to be toppled by the film that he is “joking” about.
He could have been kidding around, but its quite clear there was a subtle edge/jab at Dark Knight. He’s clever to be certain, but I think we’re all presuming a little too much here.

Doubtful. In either case, it’s not worth snowballing into something it isn’t. I laughed…

“not worth snowballing into something it isn’t”

No, of course not. But I did not laugh…I think it was a well placed insult under the guise of comedic relief. But yes, just considering the source and the fact that isn’t that “big” of issue, nothing to fight ad nauseum over.

I think it’s a jab at DARK KNIGHT because he no longer has what us fanboys consider the best comic book movie of all-time. Why additionally diss DC Comics. By the way, I saw it a second time too, but not because I was confused but because it was just that good (and my lady friend and her young son wanted to see it too).
