It should be, which I know means nothing, but there is a point made by Sasha Stone that the film has become too big too ignore. And we all know that box office does not a nomination, right Mel Gibson and “The Passion of the Christ”. However agin, like Gibson’s intense Bibnlical film, “The Dark Knight” might deserve to be there…bear in mind we have not gotten to December 31 and seen all the films. There might be five worthy nominees yet to be released.
As it only needs to get into the top five to get that nomination ( I know, duh!) I would say it will, based on box-office, lingering poignacy for Ledger and the uniformly spectacular reviews. This year hasn’t been such a memorable one for American cinema (so far, anyway) that it would be squeaked out, so it will be in effect the sole prepresentative of the quintet in the area of crowd pleaser (with attitude) I don’t see it as having a remote chance at winning, as the Oscar will go to a greater prestige item, but a nomination, meaning in the final five, I would say, most certainly.
I was skeptical for a long time, but then I didn’t think it was going to be the #1 movie of the year (let alone non-adjusted #2 of all time).
I’m forced to admit now that I was probably wrong. Even without its merits, it seems too big to ignore. Factor in that it’s also a pretty damn good movie and it feels like just the rare kind of genre picture the Academy could get behind.
I generally don’t make these decisions until much later in the year, so much is still unknown, but I’m willing to throw down a little early for TDK.
As it stands at this point in the year I’d say it definitely would be nomianted for Best Picture but we still have the “Oscar-bait” stuff to come, so I am predicting it won’t (although Ledger WILL get nominated though).
I think “The Dark Knight” deserves to be nominated for an Best Picture Oscar because it has three things going for it .Number one it’s on pace to be the second highest grossing movie ever, number two it’s hard to find a Film Critic that doesn’t love the movie and no matter how much a movie can gross I think wide acceptance by critics aides in the nomination of a movie.Last but not least for all the action that the movie has there’s a scene towards the end of the movie the begs us to ask ourselves in a time of despair, help our fellow man or help ourseleves. There’s really no right or wrong answer to that but the scene sort to has a “Titanic” boat sinking feel to it.
No.
Will I be lynched if I say I don’t think it deserves to be nominated either?
I liked it. I just don’t know if it’s that special.
I have no doubt in my mind that it will be nominated for Best Picture and Best Director. I don’t understand why many prognosticators are doubtful of its chance. Yes–it’s a super hero movie, and yes the Academy usually doesn’t go for those kinds of movie.
But movies that break the mold and that accomplish this “movie magic” that the Dark Knight is doing CAN get nominated. Who would’ve thought a popcorn movie about a gigantic shark terrorizing a New England town would get a best picture nomination? Who would have thought a movie set entirely in space with a tagline “A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away” would be nominated? Heck, who would have thought a movie about a little girl getting possessed by a demon would get nominated?
The Dark Knight has been the number one film at the box office for four weeks. I think I read the last film to do that was Return of the King (I could be wrong…and hey, that whole fantasy trilogy was nominated—and ROTK swept EVERYTHING at its Oscar awards).
This movie is, obviously, HUGE. I’ve talked to many, many people who have seen it two, three times, and who WANT to see it more. Everyone is having a deja-vu type experience similar to Titanic. I think a best picture nomination is inevitable, and many, many people will be dissappointed if the Academy cops out. And frankly, it NEEDS something like this, judging by last year’s five best picture nominations, which most moviegoers hadn’t seen (with the exception of Juno).
Boy, it sure is neck-and-neck.
In my opinion if Chris Nolan had cut 15 or 20 minutes out of its last half hr by leaving the rest of the Two-Face storyline for a third film THE DARK KNIGHT would not only be a lock for a nomination but in my opinion a very solid chance to win best picture. As is I still believe the academy has to acknowledge it with a best picture nod. Personally I still don’t understand the acclaim the LORD OF THE RINGS FILMS received. If they could get nominations then so should The Dark Knight! Hey it would also help the ratings big time!
You all know my opinion. It will be nominated. And possibly win.
No chance.
Doesn’t really deserve it either, and certainly won’t by the end of the year when all is said and done.
Delusions are powerful.
No, it perhaps should be, but if it should be, then so should Bottle Shock (a film superior to Sideways). Neither really feel like BP oscar films in this era. But I will be the first to cheer if it does get a nomination.
I do think that Christopher Nolan is on a very short list of directors in a frontrunner position for a best director nomination this year. I think the directors branch and the cinematography branch will both award a nom to Dark Knight because on the caliber of the film and also on its innovative and boundary pushing scope at the inclusion of using Imax so creatively and uniquely.
9.1 at IMDB + 8.5 at Rotten tomatoes = a clean Best Picture nomination. Find me a film with those numbers that has not been nominated for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Screenplay…. Maybe you can but it is not easy. It will not be ignored! The public love it and the critics love it and that is too much for the academy to step around.
The only two American films in this decade with better scores out of 10 at Rotten Tomatoes are Return of the King and No Country for Old Men. They are 8.6 to Dark Knight’s 8.5… That’s two Best Picture winners.
Something tells me that most Academy members don’t keep a keen eye on Rotten Tomatoes/IMDB scores. I don’t see it as a very relevant barometer.
The Broadcast Ceremony of Oscars 09
Justin Timbarlake on charge

Australia
The Dark Knight

The Road
Angelina Jolie /best actress nominee (Changeling)
Brad Pitt/best supporting actor nominee (Burn After Reading)
Kate Winslet and Leo DiCaprio also nominees.
Penelope and Bardem in the red carpet
Alicia Keys and Mike White perform the James Bond song
this could be like VMAS but couture!!!
Rotten Tomatoes rating is actually a very relevant barometer for the academy. Critical reviews and box- office gross are taken into concideration when it comes to a nomination. If The Sixth Sense didn’t have the one-two punch of solid critical and commercial success, it wouldn’t have even been a thought in voters minds. As for the academy writing it off for being a “comic-book” movie, then why nominate Babe, a “talking-pig” movie. Or Beauty and the Beast… they never take animation seriously, or The Fugitive a film based on a sixties TV series. The list goes on.
Give it BP and BD nods.
It should be!! Best film of 2008 and greatest comic book adaption yet so top 5 yes but should be no:1!
Go Dark Knight Go!!!!!
