Some exciting announcements out of Toronto today (still no “Road”). The festival is shaping up to be very, very cool this year.
The film I am most excited about, announced today, is Werner Herzog’s remake “Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans” with Nicolas Cage in the role that Harvey Keitel made legendary. No in between with this one; they either nailed it or blew it.
Drew Barrymore will bring her directorial debut here, the roller derby flick “Whip It,” with Ellen Page. That brings back memories of Saturday afternoons with my grandparents watching roller derby. Barrymore made a startling impact in “Grey Gardens” on HBO earlier this year and hopes are high for this one.
The Coen brothers are back with “A Serious Man,” as is Michael Moore with “Capitalism: A Love Story,” his latest documentary that will take viewers into the financial brain centers of America.
Rebecca Miller is back with her latest film, “The Private Lives of Pippa Lee,” featuring Robin Wright Penn as a stoic wife who follows her much older husband, portrayed by Alan Arkin, into a retirement community that will challenge their marriage.
“Dorian Gray” comes from director Oliver Parker and stars Ben Barnes as the famous Gray, who offers his soul for eternal beauty and youth. Colin Firth co-stars.
Also coming are “Perrier’s Bounty” featuring Cillian Murphy, Jim Broadbent and Brendan Gleeson, as well as Michael Caine in the promising “Harry Brown.”

It’s not a remake. Herzog has been very adamant about making that point.
There’s still hope for ‘The Road’, I got my fingers and toes and anything else that I can cross, crossed.
Totally on board with what Troy said above. Herzog’s film isn’t supposed to be a remake. In fact, he’s publicly stated that he hasn’t even ever watched the Ferrara film.
But we still get to see Cage’s dick, right? ;)
i LOVE herzog movies but i don’t know why!
Carrie: It’s because Herzog is the greatest living filmmaker in the world today.
Good lord, is “Pippa Lee” still knocking about unreleased in the States? The film’s a bust, despite that terrific cast.
