Yesterday’s thoughts on Academy Award potential for “The Tree of Life” will serve as my post-Cannes Oscar column. Thanks to Guy for doing such a bang-up job covering the festival. For now, I’ve run a comb through the Contenders section and tiered things up a bit. No ranking and no predictions yet. Just defining the field a bit more. I won’t get into serious consideration until the year’s mid-way point, I expect.
Check back tomorrow for a Malick-themed installment of The Lists.

Hmm. I would think that Tilda Swinton belongs more firmly to the group of strong contenders than just languishing in the “rest of the field”. It’s an extremely baity role, even if they’ve ignored her in the past.
And I would like to see Jonny Greenwood’s score for WNTTAK in the list of contenders for original score. Mostly just because it would make me happy to see his name there. I’m trying to have no illusions about his chances. Still, anything is possible and I would think that he’s at least a minor contender.
The upper tier clearly notes “with distribution.” Of course, this was before I saw that Oscilloscope picked the film up, so I need to go through and adjust.
I saw the “with distribution” bit after posting, sorry.
No problem. And I just added Greenwood.
¡Gracias!
Sigourney Weaver in Rampart please! It’s her year!
I know this is pretty obvious (especially because we have only seen a few contenders), but I think if dragon tattoo is good (and if isn’t to graphic), its Fincher’s year. He basically came in second last year, so the academy may see this as “his time”
PLEASE!!! Take off the results of the 2011 Oscars from the right side of the page!!!
Hey Kris,
I noticed that you have Viggo Mortensen, “On the Road” in Best Supporting Actress.
Also, what about Vanessa Redgrave here, isn’t she supporting for Coriolanus?
Vanessa Redgrave is in the top tier under supporting actress.
Thanks for the Viggo catch.
Kris, what did you think of Water For Elephants?
I loved it, and the cinematography, at the very least, shouldn’t be overlooked.
Has anyone heard anything at all about Rampart? No release date, no news on any festival appearances, it’s been too quiet for that one and I am really looking forward to it after The Messenger.
Rashad: Actually haven’t seen it.
Dragon Tattoo has a lot of hurdles to clear. First, it’s a remake. Second, it features a protagonist who suffers from Aspergers and is bisexual. Third, Fincher isn’t making the film for an Oscar.
But on the other hand it does have Nazis. So that can’t hurt.
I’d put “Bridesmaids” as a contender for Original screenplay. With the critical and commercial success it’s bound to get some buzz in that department just like “The Hangover” a couple of years ago.
Found a random Maladies trailer online with Franco, Keener and more. Any word on this one or a release date? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWX4QbORz-Q
