As much as I am rooting for The King’s Speech, maybe it was just me but I’m really happy for the two wins of Alice in Wonderland…
Congratulations to all the winners!
Viva el Rey!!!!
The only shocker was Cinematography.
But I was surprised that King’s Speech was a more subdued winner than, say, Slumdog.
I’m really glad TSN won score, but I can’t get over that cinematography award. It’s such a shame, not only because I think Deakins needs to win one, but the cinematography in Inception, while impressive, did not match up to True Grit, in my opinion.
David Fincher can easily win his overdue Oscar by making a thought-provoking movie about the creation and rise of InContention.com. Starring Peter Sarsgaard as Kris Tapley and Joseph Fiennes as Guy Lodge.
Good show. Nice production. Concise. Loved the opening Franco/Hathaway film bit. Their overall hosting — eh, kinda flat? That said, loved the Hathaway singing/Franco as Marilyn Monroe bit.
Best Pic – figured TKS had it after Hooper won. Was iffy about it’s chances after TSN won Score (!) and Editing.
Best Actor, Actress, S.Actor, no surprises. Good speeches.
Melissa Leo – there are no words. hahaha
Happy for Susanne Bier.
The shorts destroyed me in my pool, as always.
Inception is the story of the night, for me. Cinematography, both sounds, fx. And I bet it was close for art d.
Alice got art d & costume. The frequency of one film winning bfor oth of those two categories continues.
True Grit not winning Cinematography, to me, is an indicator (though, probably not strong) that the cinemnatographer’s name should be listed on the ballots. I guess the Academy at large just doesn’t care about who’s “due” statistics in tech categories unless it’s a huge story/narrative.
That’s what I got. :)
I would just like to start by saying that James Franco failed utterly and completed. At least Hathway was trying. But he just entirely copped it. Worst hosting job in the history of the Oscars.
So much so for him being multi-talented.
It’s strange how a period Best Picture winner did not manage to win a single technical trophy… A good film, but that will not win the biggest of all the tests: time.
But what really pissed me off was Hooper winning. He was notably the worse director nominated and miles away from a Chris Nolan or a Danny Boyle!
Overall I am happy with the results, except I wish Amy Adams or HBC won over Melissa Leo..
Now the race is over. Everyone should accept the results and calm down. According to AMPAS, the Best Picture of 2010 is the King’s Speech. No matter what you say or think you cannot change the results! So get over it and start focusing on next year:)
Fuckin’ Tom Hooper. Not even in the top 20 directorial efforts of 2010.
Academy Award Winners Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross has a nice ring to it though.
Agree.
3rdx NY/NY/GG/GG winner lost after Sierra Madre/Brokeback (vs. 2 DGA/Bafta losers Graduate/Brokeback). 5th Pic/Dir/Screenplay/Lead Acting winner in my life.
It’s 12:37AM ET, and Harvey Weinstein still sucks. Ditto the UK Film Council, the fucktards that financed TKS.
Wow, True Grit lost so bad. So bad, it didn’t win the record for most losses.
All in all, this was a satisfying Oscars.
Questions: When Natalie Portman thanked a “Michelle Rodriquez”? Is she the same person we think she means?
Also, Michelle Williams and Busy Phillips sitting next to each other was kinda amusing.
Thanks Kris for managing this past season. I enjoyed myself on here, greatly.
Other quick mentions:
Kirk Douglas … awesome. Justin Timberlake, nice off-the-cuff humor while presenting.
Future hosts should be Justin Timberlake and Sandra Bullock.
I think James Franco was fine; that’s
… sorry … James Franco was fine; that’s WHO he is. Anne was a bit shrill, but I think she was just a bit too excited. Still liked her singing.
There was no standing ovation for winners..
Only for Kirk Douglas (understandable) and Billy Cristal (god knows why???)
To me…
Best: Wally Pfister, and the Inception tech sweep win. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’s win.
Worst: Randy Newman win.
In the Middle: Dogtooth, David Fincher, Exit Through the Gift Shop losing. The King’s Speech winning. Alice in Wonderland’s tech wins.
Ouch: True Grit, 127 Hours.
And Melissa Leo’s dropping f-bomb for the first time ever on Oscar telecast history is not acceptable! It is not like her win was a big surprise! She should have been better prepared. Those classless actors should watch very classy British actors and learn how to give good acceptance speeches!
If Harvey was that powerful, then why didnt he get Michelle Williams win? or get a nomination for Ryan Gosling? or get a BP nod for Blue Valentine? or why didnt Inglorius Basterds win last year???
He just did what every other producer does…Support his movie! Some movie fans and bloggers get crazy over movies they like. Imagine being a producer for those movies!!!
Second that Sertan.
Would have loved to watch HBC speech.
well said, Sertan!
Academy: Dead to Me.
I really can’t wait until twenty years from now when “The Social Network” is considered one of the most artful and influential films of the decade and “The King’s Speech” will be considered a second rate “Shakespeare in Love,” only remembered for having beat out “The Social Network.”
At least I still won my Oscar pool.
Tom C.
We all survived Sandra Bullock’s win over other more deserving actresses last year! We all thought the Academy was dead then…only to go back this year!
You will get over it!
James Franco really bombed as co-host; as has been suggested already, was he stoned? That’s the only reasonable excuse I can scrounge up, and it’s a limp one. Bring back Hathaway for next year solo, give her some good material, and she’ll shine. Or even better — Justin Timberlake.
A swift ceremony overall, if a bit bland. Dull, even. Surreal moment with Douglas was my favourite part — I love old people! Melissa Leo’s batty acceptance speech will long be remembered: but the F-bomb? Classy, Leo, classy. Songs were chopped and boringly staged. Many flubbed lines, as per usual: what’s with these actors and being so wooden at the Oscars?
No real surprises except for Short Animated. I should have followed my gut and went with “Alice” winning Costume, and I switched away from it last minute in art direction. Disappointed with “Inception” winning over Roger Deakins, but he’ll have to wait for another extraordinary piece à la “Assassination of Jesse James” in order to win. But poor “True Grit”, completely shut out!
“King’s Speech” winning 4 awards makes sense to me: I only half-heartedly went with it dipping into the tech awards; should have listened to my gut, once again.
Thanks Kris, Guy, Gerard and Chad for a well-covered year! I for one am glad it’s over… hopefully next year won’t be as nasty!
Hear, hear, Sertan!
I have one more stupid observation to make: To all the Academy voters who were hesitant before voting for Melissa Leo because you thought her Oscar ads were “lacking in class” – you all got served, f$#@&s!!!
I wonder if all those who the Academy is dead to now will quit or continue posting on Oscar blogs for this next season?
LOL Louis,
I have a feeling that she wont be back next year as a presenter:)
Am I the only one who thinks that Melissa Leo saying the word fuck is being blown way out of proportion?
The Tom Hooper backlast looks like it’s already beginning here. talk about some pressure!
Best moment of the night by far was seeing Luke Matheny win Live Action Short for God of Love.
It’s surreal seeing someone you know in real life, a friend, win an Oscar. Couldn’t happen to a better guy.
My feelings are hurt for Annette Bening.
The Other Ryan,
her entire speech was a train wreck…After a long career, she won her Oscar and then wasted her chance of being gracious and humble with that classless, almost trashy, speech!
Some other actresses, half her age, did much better job with their acceptance speeches!
I like how “The Fighter” is the first film since 1986 to take both Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress. Well done!
I cant understand those people who say “TKS won only 4 awards”..
Yes it did…and still it is one more than what TSN won!!!
Speaking English,
yesterday i was watching From Here to Eternity (also won both supporting awards) again and I was watching about the same thing! I only wish supporting actress was Amy Adams, but oh well. I can live with Melissa’s win:)
Just a few random thoughts…
Kinda surprising that True Grit got nothing with 10 nominations. Disappointing to see Tom Hooper win with his distracting camera choices. My favorite moment of the night was when Spielberg pointed out that the nominees are in great company regardless. Plenty of amazing, all-time classics didn’t win in their day.
i get the feeling leo intentionally dropped the f-bomb to get it in the press
I’m a Franco fan, but his dickish attitude tonight was completely off-putting. And, unfortunately, it made Hathaway’s seemingly genuine excitement seem too hyped-up. They didn’t work as a pair at all and Franco’s completely to blame for that. Pair Hathaway with Hugh Jackman next year.
The whole awards show, however, was one of the most boring Oscar telecasts I can remember (and not because of the lack of surprises in the winners). The whole atmosphere just seemed dull and subdued. The sets were weak, the musical performances were abysmal (I can’t believe I’m actually going to say this, but I could’ve used some awkwardly choreographed dancing to liven things up)…just blah.
Favorite speech of the night was Luke Matheny…Shout out to Delaware! (Us Delawareans get excited with any mention of the state.) The King’s Speech screenwriter was also nice and I enjoyed Randy Newman’s grumpy old man routine even though I’ll never for the life of me understand his appeal.
DRM,
When I heard SS say that i was thinking “he didnt vote for TKS but knows that it will win:))
Well I hope she never get back ever as a nominee… How I wish it was Steinfeld or HBC.. Oh by the way, nice to see Tim Burton watching Atwood, Stomberg and O’Hara as they won for Alice…
As others have mentioned, kudos to you all at InContention for having the best Oscar site around. While opinions are certainly expressed here, your ability to balance those opinions with analysis (and great writing) is what makes you guys stand out from the pack.
Although I didn’t do so great in my Oscar prognosticating (17 of 24), for the first time ever, I got a short category correct thanks to your individual category analyses.
My final comment of the night (almost 2 am on the east coast!): Poor Billy Crystal.. His face looked overbotoxed! Does he really think that he looks better like this than how he would have looked without all that Botox???
And I have a feeling that James Franco treated “hosting Oscars” job as another “thing” he did for fun so he didnt take it seriuously at all..What he did (or didnt do, in this case, hosting!) was quite disrespectful to the Academy, the audience and Anne Hathaway.
He almost had “I am too cool for this job, couldnt be bothered much” attitude!
Say what you want about the ceremony, but that opening was one of the best Oscar openings I can remember.
I still love Melissa Leo. She is one of the nicest people to work with in the industry. And I liked her f-bomb.
Melissa Leo was beyond trashy. If she won an MTV Movie Award, I could maybe understand dropping the f-bomb…but at the Academy Awards??? Please…
…she gave a great performance, but I’m over her. Please don’t come back next year, Melissa.
Eh, I can’t everything my way. I guess TSN won’t have to go through BP backlash.
Sertan –
Your comment in #45 about Franco treating the Oscars as just another “thing” to do is right on the money. It was disrespectful and, as a movie buff, it kinda ticked me off (which, was probably, in the end, his objective). I realize that it’s foolish of me to give the Academy respect, but I’m the crazy movie geek that would watch the Science/Tech awards were they televised. (And seeing those clips of the Governor’s Awards with Coppola, Godard, and Wallach being awarded makes me want to watch them, too.)
