Steven Spielberg? Really? Jesus, why do they keep letting the same 5 people give out Best Picture.

Can’t really detect a narrative for a win for either TSN or TKS from that. If they even have that type of thing in mind.

Why does Bigelow need Swank to help her give out the best director prize? Nothing against Swank, but seriously, you don’t need two people to give out that one, and I think Bigelow can handle it on her own…

…some of these pairings are kinda weird, but whatever. I do think it’s cool that Bardem and Brolin are re-uniting from their “NCFOM” days to give out something.

Agree with the Dude…weird to not have Bigelow give it out on her own. Are her and Swank doing a movie together or something?

  5. Loyal Avatar

Because no one at home would know who Bigelow is unless they introduce her as the former wife of James Cameron. Sad but true.

Same on director. I honestly think ampas should make their show more like BAFTA.

    @JJ1,

don’t you think that if that if TKS wins Art Direction, Cinematography and Supporting Actress that would be a sign? :))

If they really want to make a statement, have Kimberly Peirce or Betty Thomas or a gaggle of female directors so whatever young people are still awake can see that female directors do exist. Swank?!?! Don’t get that at all.

Agree on the general “Huh?” about Swank. A mistake?

And how many times has Spielberg presented Best Picture now? It seems like a lot.

  10. Loyal Avatar

Andrew, I think it’s only Spielberg’s third time presenting Best Picture (Slumdog and Return of the King).

He’s also presented Best Director 3 times (Zemeckis, Mendes, and Scorsese)

It would be third time. I’d lke to think it’s for every time he was snubbed in any way, which would imply he’ll do it dozen more times ;).

Still, not at all thrilled to see him hand out that Best Picture Oscar to something like King’s Speech. At all.

Kinda dumb to put Actress just before Actor, since Bridges is presenting Actress and then right after has run back to his seat in time for his own category while usually the presenters follow the winner backstage. They could’ve put Director in-between them, given the guy some breathing room.

^There will probably be a commercial break before they do Best Actress or something.

Why no Mo’Nique and Christoph?? :(

The last time Spielberg presented BP, there was a clean sweep. Let’s hope that is not the case this year.

I’ve always wondered why they don’t do something like that. Open the show like the Tony Awards — put the nominated songs in action and try to recreate the year we had in movies using the nominated songs, thematically edited great movie moments from the past year and stunning visuals, lighting etc. Then right away get the host on stage for an opening monologue that isn’t as long as they usually are. Sorry, but in these long monologues there are these big holes when there’s really nothing to care about and I bet they lose a lot of people who aren’t really obsessed right there. Then get right to the award — make people wait for an acting Oscar. Impress them with something else. Since the original songs are already performerd, get somebody associated with film music and a legend associated with musicals to present — like Paul McCarthney and Julie Andrews. It would be a glamourous opening.

People would be hooked and won’t change the channel during the rehearsals. Then they could use somebody associated with animation to hand out animated feature film and animated short subject – a couple would be nice. And I think that if they care about what Hollywood came up with in recent years – Amy Adams and Patrick Dempsey would be a nice couple to revisit. They’ll do both animated categories. And really, the clips from animations always seem very long. Even to me. Make an interesting choice. Why not showing some irony and getting previous winners pay tribute to the nominees (like Shrek and Donkey paying their tribute to Toy Story 3, the characters from Spirited Away praising The Illusionist and Ellen’s fish from Finding Nemo paying tribute to How To Train Your Dragon).

Then Annette Bening & Julianne Moore pay tribute to this year’s Honorary Oscar winners and why not getting them on stage, where they will receive a standing ovation and after that beautiful moment combining it with awards. What do these individual have in common? They love movies – a producer/director, a critic, an actor and a big European auteur. Even if the auteur doesn’t show up, the other three will. And they know what a good movie needs – a good script to start with. So it could be part of their opening of the two screenplay presentations.

After that get a short comic bit, using Justin Timberlake in a pairing with the actual other stars of TSN (not Mila Kunis) and they would make a nice pair of documentary feature and documentary short subject presenters.

So then get to Best Supporting Actress. And why not the tributes? They could be fun. If the stars aren’t there, try another thing: why not re-edit the clips so that they both feature the nominated performance’s highlights and a previous nominee (or co-star) actually praising the performance. If you do that, you’ll have ca. 1 minute per nominee, so in five minutes we’ll hear And the Oscar goes to… / And don’t only get last year’s presenters. Make things more interesting. You know what will impress people? What about … Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome previous best supporting actor winner Jack Nicholson and a legendary actress, who acted in films such as All About Eve and her Oscar-winning A Gentleman’s Agreement – the 1947 winner in this category Celeste Holm. They could have a brief, but interesting introduction and it would be nice to have a winner in this category from 63 years ago presenting to this year’s winner. And I guess, the winner will be really speechless.

Then – following that – you could present a few technical awards: combine Art Direction, Make-up and Costume Design into a presentation that is informative at it is visual – use moving scerens, interviews with nominees, some videos the nominees did while working. Make people curious about filmmaking. And get a presenter, who’s actually very much attached to films that are known for their production design. I think Kate Winslet would be a good one.

Then present Foreign Language Film. Have you ever tried to find five legends from the nominated countries? This year it could be hard, but last year it would have been easier. But anyway, get somebody who’s very much the face of foreign cinema in the US, somebody like Juliette Binoche or maybe a couple: why not having a blink and combining Max von Sydow with Barbara Hershey. They’ve been in Hannah and Her Sisters, playing a couple and Barbara is in this year’s best picture nominee Black Swan.

Then go to the music. The orchestra could perform a brief medley, followed by a presentation done by a composer. Why not using the orchestra in the presentation. They could actually perform the moments, then the conductor opens the envelope and gives them a sign, so they start performing the winner.

Then get the two Sound Awards, followed by Visual Effects. And why don’t you try to make visual effects into a category, presented by … why not … somebody associated with visual effects. Spielberg!

Then get to Best Supporting Actor, use a previous supporting actress winner (Blanchett!) and a legend, who won this category — I can think of George Chakiris, who won in the 60’s.

Then combine the short film awards, but really make these categories about the films. Make people interested to watch them, to care. Why not a little bit more about the filmmakers’ journeys, how they had to fight to make them etc. About their future dreams and so on.

And then — right away — do cinematography and film editing. I think you could ask a surprise pair (Julia Roberts & Clooney would be nice) for cinematography and then somebody more storytelling-related in film editing (Scorsese & Shoonmaker).

Then get to the final two acting awards, followed by director. And since you’re using the set of Gone With the Wind, why not saving it for last and getting Olivia de Havilland for picture?

Try these little things and make the show work for audiences without compromising its values.

I’m thinking Swank will be introducing the “In Memoriam” montage.

Mr. F: Slumdog lost sound editing, but it’s a good point, especially since ROTK was a clean sweeper.

I only recall defending director winners presenting the award when they are big names like Scorsese or Spielberg, so I think Swank is added for some star power.

Funny with director being before the lead acting awards, since the only other times I remember them doing that were 03 and 08, the other years Spielberg presented BP, but perhaps I’m forgetting a year.

Yay, Mila Kunis will be there!!! They really need someone fresh for Best Picture. And why no Monique and Waltz???? do they not do that anymore.

Seems to me that if you are in FOUR nominated films in a single year, you should be asked to present. Maybe she turned them down, but HBC should be presenting Art Direction this year.

My mom made the mistake of bnuyig a video camera when I 13 and my sister was 11.90% of her recorded content was, Mooooom..are you recording? Aaarghhh!!! with attendant scuttling out-of-frame. We were not a family destined to have loads of heartwarming home movies. The only good one was the one where I got the family dog so hyper that she jumped up and nipped my butt. That was pretty funny.

QuotesChimp is also necessary to carry homeowner’s insurance because most of your possessions are stored in your home. If you do not carry homeowner’s insurance, you may not have the financial resources available to replace your personal items or rebuild your home if damage or total loss occurs. If disaster strikes, you could be left homeless and in serious debt.
