I have to take off and Guy is busy with Berlinale duties, but the BAFTAs are in progress. There may be a live feed out there somewhere but I don’t have time to track it down. I know you can keep track of the goings-on at BAFTA’s Twitter page. Consider this your space to discuss the winners. Guy will be back later with a full wrap-up.

Fuck! Natalie Portman! ^!&$#% I really thought Bening had a chance! Grrr..
Some have mentioned that no film has ever won both best film and best British film before, but that’s not entirely true (though the name of the one award was different).
The Sound Barrier, Richard III, The Bridge on the River Kwai, Room at the Top, Lawrence of Arabia, Tom Jones, Dr. Strangelove and A Man for All Seasons all won both “Best Film from Any Source” and “Best British Film”.
so between harry potter, the gruffalo, alice in wonderland, AND the kings speech HBC really had a good year. I think the oscar is hers
Kings Speech Best Film, first to take both
Since the award has been renamed…no film has took both.
OMG, please don’t let the Oscar be hers. She really doesn’t deserve it. Stuff like that really makes me question whether these bafta and oscar members know what a good performance is. Best score was also a failure on their part. However, i am going back to my prediction that Inception will take the art direction Oscar. After seeing TKS and Inception again and remembering that Inception has more art direction wins under its belt (and it’s just superior work imo) i’m gonna go inception FTW.
The BAFTAs always do this, they always vote British. It’s disgusting actually, when you really think about it.
The supporting awards going to HBC & Rush is quite possibly the worst decision the BAFTAs have ever made in the acting categories or in general since awarding Julie Walters Best Actress for Educating Rita over Meryl Streep in Sophie’s Choice!
Girl with a dragon tatoo won best foreigner movie?!
It’s really unfortunate that they couldn’t give British Film to Another Year or Four Lions. There’s no need for King’s Speech to get both.
Well, Rush was in a British movie…but he’s Australian…
I am sure since TKS didnt win as many BAFTA’s as some people expected, some bloggers including one hysterical blogger are busy with coming up with a new spin! BAFTAs brought back the possibility of BP/BD split back. So now some “self-important” bloggers will attempt to present as BD as more prestigious and important than BP award…
Regarding British/American awards, again some whinny bloggers claim that TKS shouldnt win OSCAR because it is a British movie. An American movie should win OSCAR.
This is just wrong! Very wrong!
Does anyone know what time the ASC winners will be announced
Mike
Me and you brother. UGGGGGH!!!! I am so effin pissed off right now.
Bonham Carter and Rush for Oscars Supporting statuettes!!!
TKS was obviously going to take Film, but I’m glad to see it didn’t sweep and the the awards were spread out. It shouldn’t of won British Film though. Why give it TWO best picture awards? Can’t see Rush winning the Oscar, Bale is just to good. Also HBC has a better chance now, but I still can’t see her win. Fincher’s winning makes me think that there will be a split, which will be good.
I don’t think Rush’s win means much for the Oscars.
Best Supporting Actress is the only legit contest left, I think.
I’m all for Fincher winning Best Director…
Supporting Oscars are not yet locked for Bonham Carter and Rush, but I have a feeling British Academy members will vote for Bonham-Carter straight…. I just don’t feel it for Steinfeld, Leo, and Adams…
Please note: Tom Hooper won in the Best British Film category. The director in that category along with the producers are the winners.
BAFTAs were crazy about Black Swan. They wanted to give it something. But it lost 11 awards.
Jason, why is it disgusting for the British to vote British. It’s their awards. Did you want them just to award American films?
And now because TKS didn’t win director and editing, it didn’t deserved best film?
Yeah, I applaud BAFTA for spreading the wealth.
And if TKS won 7 awards, well …. it IS a British film, and it is very good. Why berate a voting body for voting for what they deem best?
I really do not see Natalie Portman’s acting abilities. I think this is clearly a case of people wanting to reward someone because they present themselves a certain way – the anti-Lohan if you will (although Lohan is talented, troubled and awful at picking scripts, but talened). It’s not even that she’s not the best actress, I see a bad actress.
Poor ‘Another Year’. I really (foolishly) thought Lesley Manville would win. And couldn’t Best British Film have spread the love?
Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress (2010) – Helena Bonham Carter
@ Sam “I think this is cleary a case of people wanting to reward someone because they present themselves a certain way- the anti-Lohan if you will.”
Where do you find the coralation between Lohan and Portman? One is 29 years old. The other is 24? You have Portman with her second Oscar nod and Lohan possible facing prison time?
I think Lesley Manville was screwed this year, not only because it was a deep year for women, but because the nature of her character in AY was just too indicisive in it’s Lead/Supporting distinction.
I feel like, if she was nommed Lead, people would have thought it not big enough. And while nommed Supporting at BAFTA, some people may have thought it too big; hence giving a nice British achievement award to HBC (though, I did really love her in TKS).
It’s puzzling how anyone could say Manville’s role is “not big enough” to be a lead one when others have won in that category for much shorter screen times (Patricia Neal, Anthony Hopkins, etc).
Sam
I couldn’t agree more. I’ve decided not to watch the Oscars this year. My eyes can’t tolerate one more mediocre starlet walking up to that podium for a physical transformation role. What happened to acting? has it now become a circus? who can lose more weight? who can act the craziest? what is this? smh
