BAFTAs in progress

Written by

I have to take off and Guy is busy with Berlinale duties, but the BAFTAs are in progress.  There may be a live feed out there somewhere but I don’t have time to track it down.  I know you can keep track of the goings-on at BAFTA’s Twitter page.  Consider this your space to discuss the winners.  Guy will be back later with a full wrap-up.

I can’t imagine Rush winning a second Oscar over Bale’s showy performance, especially when you take into consideration how much more popular The Fighter is with the Academy (7 Oscar vs. 3 BAFTA nominations).

    Deakins. Hell. Yes.

    @ Graysmith,

the art direction award isn’t voted by the Academy’s entire membership as the Oscars are voted. It’s voted by art directors only, so it makes more sense. And TKS will probably win THREE acting awards and I don’t remember it ever happened. If it takes director, actor and film, it’ll have 8 BAFTA’s – more than The Lord of the Rings, more than Slumdog Millionaire, more than The Hurt Locker, more than any film in recent history!

    DEAKINS!

Deakins. I’m thinking that Oscar is locked up now. Well deserved.

True grit for cinematography–Deakins finally wins his Oscar!

The movie about a british monarch overcoming an impediment vs. the movie about an american boxer prevailing. I wonder who would the BAFTAS choose. Rush’s win is surprising, certainly, but I don’t think it’s indicative of something. And Carter’s win is logical, compared to the other nominees.

Director goes to Fincher: It’s not over yet!

Yes, I don’t think HBC’s win here means that much, since Leo and Weaver weren’t nominated and Steinfield is in lead. All the HBC win indicates is that she defeated Amy Adams on HBC’s home turf.

    So, not that surprising.

Rush over Bale is a little more surprising, but I’ve read that the reaction to The Fighter was not as strong overseas as it is in the U.S. I suspect that Bale will still win the Oscar, but this category does feel a little more uncertain than it did two weeks ago.

Andrew Garfield is really having bad luck in the awards circuit.

If Fincher won, best film is going to TSN I’m afraid…

Fincher wins. Things just got a little more exciting. I’m still hoping TKS takes best film.

Fincher, never doubted it. Not here, not at the Oscars.

    Fincher baby!

Looking like TSN, with that ominous British Film selection.

This should appease TSN fanboys. BAFTA is really spreading the wealth tonight. I hope Annette gets a piece of that big, British pie.

The different pundits–if you can believe them–have said that the BAFTAs almost always split director and picture.

Engrave Natalie’s name on that Oscar.

    Portman takes it.

Natalie Portman. Gag me. The best actress race is officially over. Portman has won.

They’ll split Best Picture and Best Director just like the Oscars will.

@Gilda “Rush is such a gentleman compared to Bale who has a reputation of going nuts in public”

No Bale doesn’t. He has had one isolated incident during his 25 years in Hollywood. Whose to say Rush hasn’t done the same? He just doesn’t have the press on his case the way Bale does.

  24. Brent Avatar

That’s a LOT of precursors for Portman. Bening better hope the sentiment is deafening.

If Fincher went on to win Director and TKS best british film, TSN has a clear shot on best film…

Who cares anyway? I’m glad to see Rush getting some recognition for his performance. It’s boring when one person wins everything.. Spread the wealth, there’s more than just one great performance after all.

Leading categories are finished. Some grey areas regarding Supporting. Still think Bale is set though

The Brits will be forgiven for their supporting category stumbles if they don’t award best film to TKS.

Bleh, well at least they had the sense to recognize Fincher over Hooper.

  35. Samuel Avatar

Interesting. Is the split on in two weeks time?

  36. Brent Avatar

Does Fincher’s win mean THAT much to Oscar? Either way, this really cements TKS in Picture. As if it wasn’t locked in before.

The BAFTAs really did a great job of reflecting what I’ve been predicting for the Oscars ever since the nominations came out. A lot of people have been jumping on the bandwagon that The King’s Speech is going to sweep, especially after Hooper won the DGA, but I’ve always been on board with The Social Network taking home three of the major awards, the very same it took home tonight: Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Editing. The King’s Speech will still rule, but it won’t sweep.

Oh, The King’s Speech winning both British film and Best film…

    Wow, that was quite unexpected.

TKS will win best picture and there’s a race for best director!

I agree. Think the Oscar results will be very similar to BAFTAs except for supporting.

Bonham Carter?!?! Hurl! Too much hard on for The King’s Speech she doesn’t even deserve the nomination. Even Stevie Wonder can see that!

It is my understanding that for the BAFTAs each winner is voted on only by members of its branch except Best Film. Someone correct me if I have this wrong.

I still think Director is a toss-up at the Oscars, but hoping Fincher can pull it out.

    TKS won. Hooray.

  44. Samuel Avatar

I am not one to begrudge The King’s Speech winning best pic, nor even best director should it happen. But the one category I can’t abide is Best Score. It’s not a bad score by any means, but the other nominees are a whole lot better.

I hope this Bafta win isn’t an accurate predictor.

Harvey’s probably going apoplectic right now, road raging at why King’s Speech didn’t win MORE awards. ;) And HBC? Seriously? What capital crime against fashion humanity did she commit today with her choice of BAFTA dress.

TKS wins an historic double, Firth, HBC, Rush, Desplat, original screenplay.

TSN wins director, editing , adapted screenplay.

    Deakins.

Inception and Alice for the techs.

    Very interesting.
