I have to take off and Guy is busy with Berlinale duties, but the BAFTAs are in progress. There may be a live feed out there somewhere but I don’t have time to track it down. I know you can keep track of the goings-on at BAFTA’s Twitter page. Consider this your space to discuss the winners. Guy will be back later with a full wrap-up.

Winners so far:
Best Production Design: “Inception”
Best Costume Design: “Alice in Wonderland”
Best Film Editing: “The Social Network”
Best Makeup and Hair: “Alice in Wonderland”
Best Original Score: “The King’s Speech”
Best Sound: “Inception”
Best Visual Effects: “Inception”
Best Film Not in the English Language: “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo”
So much for that “King’s Speech” sweep.
Thank Christ that The King’s Speech didn’t win Best Editing. It shouldn’t have won score, but I’d rather it win that than editing.
HBC!
Happy with all the winners so far except TSN and the girl with a million titles.
Helena for best supporting actress. YES!!!!! I smell a Tilda Swinton-like upset at the Oscars.
Shocking to see The King’s Speech win for Best British Film, seeing as no film as far as I know has won for both that and Best Film.
Very interesting to see the lack of a sweep for The King’s Speech. It looks like it’ll win fewer here than it will at the Oscars.
Yes, Outstanding British Film – The King’s Speech; Outstanding British Debut – Four Lions.
Hmm…
fewer wins? yes! crucial wins? double yes. Me thinks they are doing quite well.
Ya, im thinking carter is winning supporting actress at the oscars, still hoping for steinfeld but it just seems like the easiest choice for voters
Rush wins S. Actor. Veeeeeery interesting.
wow, so could social network win best picture at the baftas? whats happeneing here!!!
Rush beating Bale is something of an upset, no? Bale is from the UK after all.
Colin is definitely winning best actor. I just hope Annette pulls an upset and wins best actress. We’ll have a valmont reunion (which should be repeated at the Oscars).
Really strange all of this.. The King’s Speech sweeps the supporting acting categories, but kind of flops in such widely expected tech categories.
I told you guys. TKS will sweep the acting categories, here and at the Oscars too.
after Rush win,Cotillard & Daniel Day Lewis ask where they can return their prizes
has any film ever taken both best british film AND best film?
Graysmith
What happened to Amy Adams? LMAO!!!!!
@americanrequeim: Nope. Looks like that precedent is being broken tonight.
Also, TKS wins Screenplay because of course it does.
Haha, no way The King’s Speech will sweep the acting at the Oscars. But this certainly makes things a bit more exciting, since so many categories didn’t go where most would’ve expected them to.
@americanrequiem,
It has happened, but not since the Best British Film category was reinstated in 1993.
Man! TKS is on a roll
@Afrika,
She didn’t win.. and your point is? Did I ever state that I thought she would?
Rush & Carter’s wins were to be expected and since the BAFTAS usually split Best Film and Best British Film, I wouldn’t find it surprising if TKS doesn’t win. The only telling sign in relation to the Oscars, in my opinion, would be Firth losing.
what about if Benning wins? that would be very telling.
I mean in terms of The King’s Speech’s chances at the Oscars.
I think that’s a done deal.
Keeping my fingers crossed for Bening. I desperately hopes she wins.
HBC must be local sentiment?
@ Graysmith,
actually THE KING’S SPEECH is doing amazing, since BAFTA’s rarely give us sweeps. THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING won four or five awards only. And it lost art direction that year among many other categories. It’s because of the way the BAFTA’s are voted.
TS3 with Animated.
I think it’s quite wierd that Rush won over Bale. As somebody said, Blae is also British and don’t they want to aknowledge his work?
I suppose the Supporting skew could be as a result of THE FIGHTER being omitted in the Best Film category.
Bale lacks a lot in the personality department and that might come back to bite his behind come Oscar night.
Tom Hardy!!!!
Is the BAFTA production design award similar to our art direction?
@GabrielD Yeah, I find Rush’s win a lot more perplexing than HBC.
Figured Bale would be a given here.
*Bale lacks a lot in the personality department*
He may not be an ass kissing twat, but it’s insane to see that he lacks in the personality department.
*say, not see
I don’t think Bale’s Britishness is very common knowledge. And The Fighter wasn’t strong in the UK at all. I’m wondering if a lot of voters didn’t even see the film? That would explain Leo missing out-they just went for the superstar names they recognized and gave the film a couple token nominations.
Was Garfield up for the Rising Star Award? Hardy is big but, AG was a huge factor this season.
@Ross,
Sure, but it’s still surprising to see something like Inception taking home Production Design over the huge favourite that also happens to be a period film. You’d think it would’ve won something below the line, especially if it takes home Best British Film and Best Film (which hasn’t happened since 1968).
*I told you guys. TKS will sweep the acting categories, here and at the Oscars too.*
You may be right and it will be a sad, sad day.
TSN wins Adapted Screenplay. No surprises there, then…
The Rising Star Award is voted for by the public though so that could turn out whatever which way, especially in a year like this with no clear favourite. Maybe a lot of Inception fans called in to vote?
Rush is such a gentleman compared to Bale who has a reputation of going nuts in public. Seems like the Brits would prefer someone like Rush. In fact some of the pundits here say the supp act race is tightening, as Rush is well regarded in Hollywood. But I’m sure Bale will pull it out.
@ Brent
Since Melissa Leo and Hailee Steinfield, whose are the frontrunners in the category, were not nominated, HBC’s win is not that indicative of a sweep.
On the other hand, Rush (australian, so, no specific attachement) winning over Bale? I don’t know, it just seems to indicate something…
sorkin for adapted screenplay–finally!
“I don’t think Bale’s Britishness is very common knowledge.”
It’s common knowledge in the UK, of course. Rush’s win has nothing to do with Bale’s “personality,” and all to do with the two films they are in.
