The only person who doesn’t need to be nervous is Colin Firth.

and some can argue Natalie Portman too. After the overly predictable globes and sags, I have no excitement left for the Oscar race.

I don’t think anybody really needs to be nervous, except for Hooper and Fincher… mabye, who even knows if there’s still a race there.

This is very true. This is one of the first Oscar seasons where it is truly boring, and most of the winners are already known.

Scott Rudin better step to it if he wants to turn around The Social Network’s Oscar chances…

Was there a race whenb everybody thought that The Social Network was the front runner?

Every single year the Oscar race is predictable. You know who’s gonna win way before the ceremony. I think it is better now after The King’s Speech’s DGA, PGA and SAG wins.

@Robert: Uh, what? The last Oscar season was far more locked than this one.

2009: Hurt Locker, Bigelow, Bridges, Bullock, Waltz, Mo’Nique.
    2010: King’s Speech, Hooper/Fincher, Firth, Portman, Bale/Rush, Steinfeld/Leo.

Let’s not pretend now that anyone other than Bale is going to win.

    @Roger Hamer
I don’t think there’s much he can do at this point. Even Sorkin’s potential Oscar seems shaky to me.

…..Roger? Anyway, I still think a turnaround is possible. If he goes back to the drawing board, improves Fincher’s image, maybe frames the Best Picture angle in a new way (not the most “moving” or “inspiring” film of the year? Try most “thought-provoking” or “talked-about,” and see if that sways a few voters), he could pull off Best Director for the film, I really do.

Come on, Academy. Do it. You know you want to put “Toy Story 3” at the top of your list.

Sorry. Was posting fast and got names mixed up. It seems like even the most thought-provoking film can be trumped Oscar porn.

Geoffrey Rush has always been his biggest competition. That doesn’t mean everyone is comfortable voting for him – look for Jeremy Renner as a possible dark horse upset.

Geoffrey Rush hasn’t won anything. How exactly is he competition? Just because most feel he is the second best performance in the category?

Frontrunners lose – Tilda Swinton wasn’t the frontrunner the year she won and she won.

Melissa Leo’s biggest threat is Helena Bonham Carter. Both women are previous Best Actress nominees but Carter lost her Oscar to Helen Hunt – they’ll want to rectify that soon.

For the record all child actress nominees lost to adults in the last decade.

@ /3rtfu11: Let’s keep things in perspective, here. Best Supporting Actress 2007 was a WIDE open race. Amy Ryan had the early lead with the critics’ groups and the BFCA, but Cate Blanchett won the Golden Globe, Ruby Dee took SAG and Swinton herself snagged a BAFTA before her victory at the Oscars. That is not the case here.

And the award based upon the opinion of some 5,700 people goes to….

There is a huge difference between a frontruner and a frontrunner who has swept everything-won the majority of the critic awards, BFCA/GG/SAG-and received a BAFTA nomination and are not previous Oscar winners. That is Firth, Portman, and Bale. Any of them losing would be pretty historic in nature.

Leo’s a bit of a different matter I guess. She split the critic awards and missed a BAFTA nomination (and has a costar in her category). I think she will win, but supporting actress is kind of a mess.

I love how in one thread you can have people complaining about how boring the state of the race is because we all know who’s going to win most of the awards, and then the very next post can be about how awful it is not to know who’s going to win best supporting actress.

This is why the Oscars are fun even when they’re not. The obsessiveness about knowing vs. not knowing, as well as everybody bitching about what makes one nominee “deserving” vs. what makes another “undeserving”, etc., — in short, the politics of it all — is what makes the Academy Awards fun.

Everyone can lighten up now. :)

I cannot wait to see what happens in Portman’s post-Oscar win career.
