‘Inception,’ ‘Dragon’ reign at VES awards

Four for “Inception,” three for “How to Train Your Dragon” (which beat out “Toy Story 3” every step of the way).  “Hereafter,” meanwhile, took the supporting effects award.

Key quote from Christopher Nolan, who received the inaugural Visionary Award:

I know visual effects people pride themselves on doing the impossible.  I’d just like to encourage you to say “no” to the unreasonable.

I would have thought Rapunzel would have beaten Toothless out; I heard people LOVED what the animators did with her hair.

    Wow, impressive showing for HTTYD.

At least Inception will receive the recognition it’s due for special effects.

I wonder who Nolan was referring to about with that quote…

Perhaps a majority of the FXers will vote for HTTYD over TS3 in the Academy.

I feel so crumby for saying something like that – as I LOVED both animated films. I’m just salivating for an upset somewhere. :)

I’m talking Best Animated Film, of course.

And yay to Inception. Still thinking it will get both sounds, fx, and maybe art direction (but TKS in threatening in 2 of those categories).

Glad for Inception. I loved Toy Story 3, but honestly, HTTYD was so much better! And yay King Kong 360 3D!!!

I am not surprised by Toy Story 3 loosing it out to How To Train Your Dragon in terms of visual effects. Toy Story 3, great film that it is, is not visually revolutionary the way Wall-E (heavens that movie is a visual marvel) and Cars were, so no surprises.

And while the animation in HTTYD was superb, the animation in Tangled was dazzling. There’s obviously the hair but I would also like to note the flooding sequence when the dam breaks, the effects were good enough for a live-action film. Simply marvelously stuff. And the entire movie was so breathtakingly lit.

Even the Snyder owl movie, it is absolute shit but the animation was very good though much of it was ruined by the excessively stylized “Snyder” movement and the constant slow motion.

AMPAS looks pretty silly for overlooking Nolan in Director when all these other groups are recognizing him. I’m glad Nolan will still be leaving this season with some hardware.

Also, love the accompanying pic, Kris. Different take on the same still we’ve seen all season.

    @Hans. The Oscars are silly.

no surprise here. HTTYD was the better animated film visually and it deserves this. Toy Story 3 still has the animated oscar in the bag with its broad support with nominations in Best Picture, Adapted Screenplay, Sound, etc..

I think Dragon and Hereafter deserve the Oscar. I know that’s not the dominant, mainstream groupthink, but I seriously feel both are most deserving in their respective categories. Toy Story 3 and Inception are likely to win, but Hereafter and Dragon are the true winners, imho.
