Tomorrow’s the big day. And there are always surprises. But rather than offer a space for predicting shockers, I thought I’d ask for your wish list picks. Name three nominations (in the major categories) that seemingly have no chance whatsoever, but are still in the acceptable realm of possibility, which would send you over the moon.
For example, I might consider “Exit Through the Gift Shop” to be the best film of the year, but for these purposes it’s more appropriate to go with something like “Shutter Island” or, better yet, “The Way Back” for my “wish list” picks in Best Picture. Make sense?
I’ll start…
Best Picture: “The Way Back”
Best Director: Mike Leigh, “Another Year”
Best Original Screenplay: “Four Lions”
You? (My final predictions are here if you missed them.)

One quick note: if anyone out of the entire True Grit cast gets nominated for best Supporting Actor, it should be Brolin. Seriously. The most 3-dimensional performance/character in the entire movie. It needs to be said. Pepper was also good.
And I am astonished to report that I found Bridges somewhat… muted. There.

It’s odd, but I have’t seen any really good movies this year that AREN’T among the top ten–none that I can think of. In previous years, “Zodiac,” “Match Point,” and “Mulholland Drive” were out of the running, but maybe with ten nominees they would have been nominated.

(I tried to go with things which I feel have little-to-no shot at getting in to the finals. I wanted to choose Ryan Gosling for ‘Blue Valentine’ but I think he’s certainly in the top 6 or 7 choices. I’m hoping he can sneak in! And Michelle Williams as well, of course. Certainly over Manville or Swank or Steinfeld—who I hopes gets Supporting so she can win…even if it is category fraud).
Best Picture: The Way Back
Best Director: Danny Boyle, 127 Hours
Best S. Actor: John Hawkes, Winter’s Bone

So wait, you want Williams in over Steinfeld, whom you nonetheless want to win an Oscar? Interesing take.
