I liked last night’s episode well enough but it couldn’t touch his 1996 stab. I blame the cast and writers more than anything, but as usual, Carrey put his heart into each bit, especially this one (which was kind of weak but mostly saved by his effort):

I like Carrey too Kris, but come on, this is painful.
I don’t think I’ll be able to stop laughing for a while. Clever and hilarious. Those actors are GOOD.
It was an awful sketch, Chad, but like most things, Carrey’s dedication keeps it from falling completely apart. As I noted.
I wanted to like this sketch more than I actually did, but thought the episode overall was stronger than most recent ones. Especially that amusement park bit with Carrey as a creepy automaton. Awesome.
This wasn’t all awful. I love the flow chart moment and how this sends up the film’s often overly obvious symbolism.
This bit could have been SOOOOO much better…but you’re right, Kris, Carrey saves it from being a complete waste.
i enjoyed this. Side note: I had a thought today…How is Black Swan not technically an adapted screenplay? Doesn’t it pretty closely follow Swan Lake’s plot? Just a thought.
I actually thought the whole episode (including this skit) was quite funny.
But that IS because of Carrey. It’s also the best SNL I’ve seen in a very long time. SNL sure sucks now, doesn’t it?
Okay, I just saw the amusement park skit and that was pretty good.
This is about as funny as a “Meet the Browns” episode, maybe worse.
This show was good up until somewhere during maybe I don’t know 2002-2005, but then we starting getting new talent and new writers, but now that has only lasted so long and the writing has grown stale and poor and these talents can only hide it for so long. I liked I guess around 2 or so skits last night, but yea this doesn’t compare to the first Carrey hosting as the lifeguard, Jimmy Stewart on the Joe Pesci Show, and Night at the Roxbury.
Color me pinko but Carrey was kind of mediocre and seemed to try to hard. The sketch is alright but he wasn’t the strognest player in it.
Kris, I know you are a big Jim Carrey fan since “In Living Color” ( I was too) , and many people ( including myself) predicted he would be the only cast member to become a gigantic comedic star .
But, after one hour of SNL , I had to turn to another channel. I know SNL is a comedic boot camp and hosting job is enormously challenging . But, sadly, it seems Carrey doesn’t know the subtlety approach to acting ( Hello, Bill Murray & Tom Hanks ! ) . He treats acting like a sledgehammer and enjoys hitting the audience on the head with this tool. It is absolutely irksome , and it drains most of the humor from the comedy ( also the SNL writers didn’t do him any favors) . Sorry, Kris, this is not funny , and it definitely isn’t comedic acting.
P.S. In the past couple of years , the best SNL hosts have been : Jon Hamm ( who knew Don Draper could do comedy well ? ) , Justin Timberlake ( his SNL gigs helped him transition to feature films) , Zach Galifianakis ( he can improvise with the best of the best) , Betty White ( Of course ! ) , and Anne Hathaway ( her surprisingly great impressions & very good comedic timing – she was offered the Oscar co-hosting gig ).
I think the best host was Taylor Lautner.
That was even worse than Black Swan.
I still can’t stop laughing at the Worst of Soul Train sketch. I liked the psychic/impressionist bit, too.
@Chase Kahn: Don’t diss my man Tyler P.! One of these years, he’s gonna be sweeping all the awards like it’s nobody’s business! (Not really.)
I thought this was hilarious…I also liked the psychic one.
I forgot to mention that the surreal carnival skit was the highlight of the evening- both Jim Carrey & Taran Killam handled the physical comedy with aplomb. I will never knock Jim’s unbelievable knack for physical humor.
Out of all the current SNL cast members, I truly hope , the comedic chameleon , Bill Hader will have a big time film career – a la Bill Murray. Their is nothing Hader cannot do comedically- always worth watching.
I will admit, this was the first fist-in-mouth gag that has ever elicited a laugh from me. The final facial expression sealed that bit for me. But yeah, Black Swan deserves a way better send up than that.
Terrible episode with the exception of the Amusement Park Ride skit (which was quite good).
I loved the homeless band and the amusement park “animatronics”
