Well, we got ourselves a surprise or two, after all. If you predicted Hilary Swank’s out-of-nowhere Best Actress nomination for “Conviction,” go out and buy yourself a congratulatory drink. (While you’re at the bar, buy a commiserative one for Nathaniel Rogers too.)
I doubt the nomination will launch her into the Academy’s five (unless story-mongers really are desperate to see another round in the Swank vs. Bening grudge match), but it does demonstrate how up for grabs that fifth slot is. Lesley Manville and Michelle Williams, the ball is still in your court.
Nothing on the list matches that nomination for sheer unexpectedness, but I suspect a fair few people didn’t see “Winter’s Bone” star John Hawkes coming in the Best Supporting Actor category — much less at the expense of the season’s nominal frontrunner, “The Social Network.” I wrote in my predictions last night that I wasn’t sure how fully SAG would warm to the film’s young, non-insider cast: while I predicted a snub for Jesse Eisenberg, it was actually Andrew Garfield who got the shaft.
(He’s in distinguished company, at least: joining him on the sidelines are Jacki Weaver, Ryan Gosling and his aforementioned “Blue Valentine” co-star, all of whom I can easily imagine overcoming this roadblock a month from now.)
Though Mark Wahlberg didn’t repeat his Golden Globe coup from earlier this week, “The Fighter” still lived up to its reputation as the season’s potential late-breaking spoiler, joining “The King’s Speech” in the top spot with four nominations. Just behind, with three, are “The Kids Are All Right” — rallying nicely after a couple of early misses on the precursor trailer — and “Black Swan.” Darren Aronofsky’s film just goes from strength to strength: with nods from the BFCA, the Globes and now SAG, one-time longshot Mila Kunis is looking a mighty threat for an Oscar spot. Nice.
All four of those titles landed in SAG’s ostensible Best Picture category, Best Ensemble, with “The Social Network,” of course, rounding out the list. I see a number of our readers already fussing over “Inception”‘s absence from the list (well, save for Best Stunt Ensemble), to which I can only say that a large ensemble doesn’t count for much when the film isn’t much of actor’s piece.
Check out the full list of film nominees at The Circuit.

YAYYY!!!!!!
Why Renner instead of Garfield? Well I hope Garfield still snags that Oscar nomination.
a little miffed that Andrew Garfield wasn’t nominated….
Swank and Bening, together again at last.
But this does not bode well for Inception. This was the one guild TDK missed out on in 2008.
John Hawkes, YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!
I’m sure he’ll be snubbed at the Oscars in favor of someone like Andrew Garfield who missed out here, but I’m still thrilled to see him getting such a major nomination.. And fingers crossed, who knows? Could happen, clearly Garfield isn’t the sure thing most thought.
How thrilling for Mila Kunis too, she now has a BFCA, GG and SAG nomination. Oscar is sure to follow, you would think, with such a track record.
Oh, and I totally LOL-ed when Swank’s name was read out. I’m still LOL-ing. At least they can’t be blamed for being predictable.
Agreed red_wine… Edgar needs to win that award for best actor in a mini-series…
Strike my last comment. It’s early morning and I forgot we have 10 nominations in BP, not 5. Inception is fine, then, but this eliminates hope of it being the big winner this season.
Mila Kunis is IN! Next stop, the Oscars!
Best ensemble nomination for “Black Swan” is quite a suprise. And a huge, huge boost for the film’s Best Picture Oscar chances.
It appears that actors really dig the film.
Mike_M, except Carlos isn’t a mini-series, it is cinema, it is a motion picture. Edger Ramirez should be up with the big guys in the Lead Actor in a motion picture category.
On the TV side of things, WOW at Chris Colfer’s nomination! Extremely impressive in a condensed category like that, and extremely well-deserved for the work he’s put forth especially this season.
I hope Garfield snags it too, but preferably in favor of Rush (yeah right).
Loving the Renner & Kunis noms.
Lolololol, Swank. It’s as if voters decided to follow the unwritten rule that two Best Actress nominees must be previous winners at all costs. This coincides with that other Supporting Actress rule that two women from the same film must be nominated annually.
Poor Jacki Weaver. Hope this isn’t it for her….Love Kunis and Adams, but hope that Weaver replaces one of them for the Oscars.
Sadly, I think the Globes, at least in the Drama categories, were more accurate. But that could just be me stanning tirelessly for Gosling/Williams.
Just a question…why has Inception been ignored for it’s brilliant ensemble? When you look at how great the cast is (Leo Dicaprio, Ellen Page, Joseph Gordon Levitt, Marion Cottillard, Tom Hardy, Ken Wattanabe, Cillian Murphy, Daleep Rao, Michael Caine, Pete Postlethwaite, Tom Berenger) and then you see that they are all good, it just puzzles me. Oh well….
Oh, and the other rule, of course: That we must have a Bening vs. Swank race. Again. Just…ugh.
Things looking good for BP for TSN, TKS, Black Swan, Fighter, and now … Kids.
I think Inception is in 6th (slipped, a bit). Winter’s Bone is looking good, unless Kids qialifies as it’s sole indie spot, altogether.
Feeling less sure about a The Town nom. Just Renner, no Afflecks anywhere, etc..
Ouch for Lesley Manville, Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling, but I don’t think this lineup will repeat for the Oscars.
And that Swank nomination helps Bening, that’s for sure. But what’s the fascination about her? Zero buzz, “okay”-performance and gets in, but Rockwell misses.
@Jason: It’s not that puzzling, Jason. It’s not an “acting movie”; ergo, voters like this tend to overlook or dismiss it in this regard.
@JJ1: Don’t give up all hope. There’s still the possibility of a writing nom from WGA. Hopefully he isn’t shafted like he was for Gone Baby Gone.
@The Other James D.: There is just so much good talent this year that is going to go unrewarded, it’s a bittersweet embarrassment of riches, isn’t it?
I can’t wait for Meg Griffin to become an Academy Award nominee.
Happy for all the Black Swan love, specially the surprise again of Kunis, maybe she will be nominated after all.
Oh, and the best thing is indeed Chris Colfer’s nomination for best actor comedy, I’m so happy for all the attention he’s getting. Well deserved.
Seriously, Hilary Swank?! Swank getting in over Michelle Williams is just devastating to me.
In what universe were they living where Hilary Swank deserved recognition for the mediocre “Conviction” but Sam Rockwell, the films only saving grace, did not?
And I just can’t begin to understand how the guild that should most understand the beauty of Gosling & William’s performances could snub them.
Best Actor – looks set unless Gosling bumps someone.
Best Actress – gotta hold out hope that Swank will be Manville or Williams. Ugh, stunned by lack of Manville.
Best Supp. Actor – hope Brits get Garfield to bump either Hawkes or Renner.
Best Supp. Actress – I still think Steinfeld and Kunis are on shaky ground (Weaver/Manville/Weist).
I kinda expected Winter’s Bone to get an ensemble nomination. I guess it was ranked #6 and they went for the John Hawkes nomination instead as a consolation prize.
Andrew Garfield not being nominated is surprising, though. At least The Social Network got the ensemble nomination, otherwise it’d been Up in the Air 2: Electric Boogaloo.
Inception is not a contender for any acting awards, so no one should be surprised or shocked that it didn’t get anything here. The performances in it were just fine, they’re just not the kind that gets nominated for awards. The film will still get a Best Picture nomination and so on, this has no impact on it’s chances.
Ugh, Swank? Really? Really, SAG? I appreciate them wanting to shake things up a bit, but oy. Really thought ‘The Town’ and ‘Inception’ would show up in best ensemble…I still think ‘Inception’ will land in the best picture race, but I feel like this might be a big blow to ‘The Town’s chances. Very excited about Renner and Kunis. Both give great performances that I never thought would gain a lot of awards traction, but I was wrong.
Did Swank spread AIDS or something in the world???
I wonder why she gets so much hate.
@Hans: So true. It’s a fairly vacant year, and yet there’s richness all around. But like 2007, I think things will be chosen more for an agenda than for being worthy.
@red_wine: She wasn’t bad by any means, but it was such an okay-TV-level-type of performance. However, in Best Actress, that is often appreciated, because women overcoming/succumbing to struggle gives voters lots of eastwoodies.
Gotta agree – HOW could Swank get into 5(!) and not Williams. HOW could she get a notice in a strong year of actresses and Rockwell gets nothing for what’s deemed the best performance of the film?
I guess you never know with SAG (being as large a guild as they are) what’s gonna surface.
If any movie took a bit of a hit I’d say it was The Town for missing out on an Ensemble nomination. Hard to argue with the five films that did get in though, and they’re all bigger Oscar contenders too. At least it’s got Renner to solidify its odds for a Best Picture nomination.
You gotta wonder about Lesley Manville though.. Is it category confusion? Not enough having seen the film? Is it just not to taste of American voters? There’s gotta be some reason she’s missed out on the big three precursors. Her odds are incredibly slim at this point, especially since she’s not killing it with the critics awards either.
Hawkes love is great.
Hailee love is great as well, but she is the lead. I just hope she and Portman win
The Other James D., much worse is nominated all the time, but people seem personally offended somehow by her.
Btw, looks like Sasha Stone’s No Guts/No Glory shtick finally paid off this season, as she astutely selected/randomly pooped the Hilary Swank nomination notion as her choice. Nice job, Sasha! Now, whatever inadvertent voodoo magic you used to make that nomination occur, please stick a pin in her doll facsimile and reverse it in Manville’s favor kthxbi.
I love that Swank was nominated! I hope that she gets nominated at the Oscars – the last two times Swank beat Benning. What drama, for there to be a round three of this battle!
Weaver has an uphill battle – little seen movie, high expectations and more of a subtle performance. I don’t think she’ll get enough votes to make it into the top five especially with the tough competition this year.
Considering Hawkins did better than Manville, I’d say that Weaver could be this year’s Hawkins. Here’s hoping she’s merely Amy Ryan with a slight speed bump. Animal Kingdom better have had a convincing DVD push!
@red_wine: I’m with you there. Hell, it’s not like she was nommed for Amelia (disembowel me). If Conviction were a 2009 film and she had snuck in over, say, Mirren….Well, even though Mirren was better, it wouldn’t be that big of a deal to me, because Best Actress was major jock itch last year. This year, however, it’s stronger but there’s fuckery afoot.
@ red_wine (26): Right?
But I’m also surprised that Swank got the nod. Even though I actually predicted Conviction for two nominations, I thought it would be Rockwell & ensemble. If anything, I could have imagined a Juliette Lewis shocker. SAG loves this movie.
Things not looking good for The Town.
No Enbsemble nod with SAG? When that would be it’s strongest guild?
As I see it for BP noms:
The King’s Speech
The Social Network
The Fighter
Black Swan

3. Jesse Eisenberg – The Social Network (B/G/S)

6. Jacki Weaver – Animal Kingdom (B/G)
B = BFCA nom
G = Golden Globes nom
S = SAG nom
Red makes a good point, I guess Swank is uncool because she’s been very successful. Everyone automatically seems to zero in on her.
‘Black Swan’ has been getting major love recently, and I hope it continues, especially for Kunis.
Bummer about Garfield getting pushed out, but I’m happy that Renner made it in.
Chris Colfer!!!!!! <3
Hilary Swank?!?! I haven't seen 'Conviction' yet, so no comment! lol
Best Actor seems most likely to repeat at the Oscars, but I'm thinking maybe Supporting Actress will repeat as well. I'm still holding out hope that the Oscars will nominate Andrew Garfield.
I guess it was ranked #6 and they went for the John Hawkes nomination instead as a consolation prize.
Cute theory, Andrej, but the nominations aren’t compiled by a jury. This is simply how the votes stacked up.
The Other James D.
I don’t think its star fucking. I would hesitate in calling Swank a star. She’s an A-lister all right but that is because of her 2 Oscars and talent. She isn’t popular, beautiful (IMHO), babe, sexy, famous around the world, gets the biggest roles in Hollywood, gets chased by paparazzi, appears half naked on magazine covers.
She is just a low-key hard-working actor who make it big with her acting talents alone, maybe that is why she inspires members of SAG. I don’t think its star fucking at all, she is no Kate Winslet or Meryl Streep.
Awards Daily is out of whack again with its server, so here goes. Duvall’s nomination reeks of career achievement for a movie no one saw. That sound you heard was the final nail in the coffin of Inception’s Oscar hopes. The genre bias of the Academy has spread like a virus to SAG. To me, a “stunt ensemble” nomination is an insult. I have serious doubt Inception will be nominated for picture, director OR screenplay. Pretty much a total rear end smooching of the hardcore arthouse.
And then there’s Hilary Swank, SAG’s attempt to one-up the HFPA re: The Tourist.
When the hell did I ever mention “starfucking”? -_- I said “there’s fuckery afoot”, meaning general fuckery, as in the snubbage of better performances. Although I do agree that she isn’t attractive and The Office‘s writers need to let it go. Neigh.
” I have serious doubt Inception will be nominated for picture, director OR screenplay. ”
I hope your words are prophetic! What joy it shall be on nomination morning if this happens to be true.
LOL, oh Paul. Never change. Just go away.
@red_wine,
I don’t know about the sexy and half-naked part. I saw some black and white photos of her a while back, ads for Calvin Klein underwear, and she looked pretty damn hot in them.
Glad that Steinfeld and Bridges got in. Was kind of getting pissed off that people were thinking that it wasn’t going to get anything because of the Globes. The Globes don’t mean shit. Steinfeld is going to win Best Supporting Actress at the Oscars.
Yeah, sure. Let’s hope Melissa Leo says otherwise.
SAG aren’t starfuckers, certainly not on the level of the BFCA and especially the Golden Globes anyway. If they were starfuckers there’s no way in hell they would’ve nominated John Hawkes, for example. I don’t see the Swank nomination as starfucking, it’s just a really random nomination for a film most had discounted as being out of the race, especially for Swank since it was Rockwell who was getting the boatload of the praise.
Graysmith,
I just checked out those pics and if I didn’t know beforehand it was Swank, I would never have guessed it was her, I think she has been photoshopped out of her mind.
She’s hot here all right but she doesn’t generally do it for me. Though I really admire her acting.
