Taking questions for Oscar Talk

Written by

Totally dropped the ball on this yesterday (of course), but maybe you guys are lurking and can squeeze a few queries in before Anne and I get to the podcast.  PLEASE KEEP IT TO ONE QUESTION, and as usual, stray from stuff we’ve already covered.

Where does Halle Berry stand in the Best Actress race now that the film has been screened?

And is Richard Jenkins getting a campaign for Eat Pray Love or Let Me In?

This season, we keep hearing that Best Actress is so deep, and yet it seems that most film blogs only see two possibilities for the win (Bening and Portman). What are your favorite years for the category, and how does this years race stack up against those other great years?

How much chance does Naomi Watts stand in the best actress race when compared to the actresses who are competing for may be 1 vacant best actress slot – the likes of Michelle , Sally and Julliane. From what I feel Sally has the disadvantage of staring in a small film .. Michelle .. again stars in an NC-17 Rated film ..and Julliane competing against Annette .. so it seems to me Naomi could be holding that 6th position .. in case one of the 5 strongholds move .. also considering Fair Game’s better than expected box-office run …..What’s your say .. ???

Because Leo DiCaprio will be in Eastwood’s ‘Hoover’, do you guys feel like he won’t get a nom or win this year (though he was fantastic twice), and may get nommed and/or WIN whenever that film comes out?

    Would it be his “time”?

Often I get a little bored following the oscar race because of how the best picture winner seems to be a lock months before the nominations are announced. For me, the more competitive and close the races are, the more interesting they are to watch. I just wanted to know in your years of covering this annaual event, what have some of your favorite races been to follow?

I’m only asking two questions because it’s Black Friday and you don’t seem to have a lot of people online asking questions:

    1) Toy Story 3 lost some of its appeal for me the second time around, and I certainly don’t think it will prove as lasting or conducive to repeat viewings as its predecessors. It felt less cohesive and more like a string of comedic episodes. Anyway, I’m wondering if you’re hearing similar feedback from industry folks or voters who are catching the film for a second or third time on home video. Now that some contenders are making their way to DVD and Blu-ray, are you noticing any other Oscar heavyweights that seem to either suffer or benefit from multiple viewings?

    2) Why all the love for Jennifer Lawrence and so little for John Hawkes, who I think should be strongly considered for a Best Supporting Actor nod?

The King’s Speech got a score of 90% in Rotten Tomatoes, which even if it means it’s pretty good, it puts it behind a whole bunch of other films like Toy Story 3, How To Train Your Dragon, The Social Network, The Kids Are All Right and 127 Hours.

Do you think this less-glowing-as-expected consensus might affect the movie’s chances to win Best Picture in any way, shape or form?

What are your feelings on some of the films released over the holiday into theaters? And what chances do they have for Oscars?

Am I alone in thinking the numerous amounts of film festivals, which show all of the supposed Oscar contenders months before release, takes away the excitement and surprise of the Oscar season?

My main question would be about the lack of big office numbers for BP contenders, especially when compared to last year. Does it really matter to voters during the nomination process.

i think that Marion Cotillar delivered a great performance in Inception and deserves some recognition

I don’t have any question, I just hope Kris will put a little of Carter Burwell’s True Grit score for the intro to the podcast. :D

Oh, I do have a question. Has Tron Legacy started screening yet, and if so, have you heard any off-the-books reactions?

If Natalie Portman wins Best Actress, will hers be the only kind from a genre perspective to win? Kathy Bates did win for a horror movie, but her main competition that year (Angelica Huston and Joanne Woodward) already had won Oscars. I only ask because Catherine Deneuve and Mia Farrow were great in Repulsion and Rosemary’s Baby, respectively, but were not even nominated.

    Keil,

I too am curious why John Hawkes is getting looked over. He currently sits atop my own list of supporting actors, though I admittedly haven’t seen very many contenders for that category.. Still, I think he’ll be one of my top five when all is said and done. He’s already ahead of presumed/predicted Oscar nominees Ruffalo and Garfield on my list.

    Andrej,

It only has 42 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes so far, by the time it goes into wide release it’ll probably have four times as many reviews, which could kick its percentage up quite a bit. Also, if you look at the average rating beneath the percentage, you’ll see it has an 8.4 rating vs. the 7.9 that The Kids Are All Right and How To Train Your Dragon got. The percentage isn’t everything.
