Only 15 films qualify for Oscar’s animated feature race

Written by

I honestly didn’t expect the list to hit so soon on the heels of my item earlier this afternoon, but hit it has.  And it actually appears that “The Dreams of Jinsha” was the other title submitted, not “Chico & Rita.”

Alas, there are only 15 titles that qualified, meaning we will only see three nominees in the category this year.  “Yogi Bear,” predictably, did not qualify, while “Idiots and Angels,” it turns out, did.  I’d LOVE to see Bill Plympton in an Oscar race.

The rest are the usual suspects, but it’s a real shame we can’t have a full slate this year.  Speaking solely for myself, I’m liking a lot of feature animation in 2010.  TheGolden Globes, however, could still see five nominees as long as 14 titles were submitted to the HFPA for consideration.  Check out Oscar’s field of animated feature contenders after the jump.

“Alpha and Omega”
“Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore”
“Despicable Me”
“The Dreams of Jinsha”
“How to Train Your Dragon”
“Idiots and Angels”
“The Illusionist”
“Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole”
“Megamind”
“My Dog Tulip”
“Shrek Forever After”
“Summer Wars”
“Tangled”
“Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue”
“Toy Story 3”

And from the press release:

“The Dreams of Jinsha,” “The Illusionist,” “Summer Wars” and “Tangled” have not yet had their required Los Angeles qualifying run. Submitted features must fulfill the theatrical release requirements and meet the category’s other qualifying rules before they can advance in the voting process.

Under the rules for this category, in any year in which 8 to 15 animated features are released in Los Angeles County, a maximum of 3 motion pictures may be nominated. If 16 or more animated features are submitted and accepted in the category, a maximum of 5 motion pictures may be nominated.

Films submitted in the Animated Feature Film category also may qualify for Academy Awards in other categories, including Best Picture, provided they meet the requirements for those categories.

Well at least it looks like a race this year. I could see any of the top three on your sidebar winning.

Although if TS3 does get the best pic nod the race is of course over.

Pixar will win for a fourth consecutive year and an 8th overall nomination. I’m guessing that hot streak ends next year with Cars 2.

Toy Story 3, How to Train Your Dragon and Tangled sounds right. I think you’re shooting yourselves in the foot predicting The Illusionist over what is an essentially a modern-day Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast.

anyone else think “Legend of the Guardians” could pull off a sneak attack and get in?

if Zack Snyder becomes an Oscar nominee over a masterpiece like “The Illusionist”, I might vomit.

    Steven,

Why would it be shooting yourself in the foot to predict a unique piece of animation as opposed to what you yourself basically call a rehash of past Disney films? The animation branch has repeatedly nominated smaller, arty films over the large, commercial films, and The Illusionist fits that bill perfectly.

The Illusionist most certainly has a strong chance at the third spot.

Legend of the Guardians, however, has no hope for a nomination.

To know how animators think is to understand that they value films like The Illusionist. I don’t think it’s impossible for Tangled to make it in, but I’m going off a mixture of history and actually talking to those who vote, here.

I hope you’re right, Kris… I really do. I think “The Illusionist” is one of the very best films of the year so far, and it would benefit greatly from a nod!

This rule for 16 films is ridiculous! No other description to it! It means that The Illusionist or Despicable Me are probably gonna be left out he Oscars and a film like The Wolfman can be nominated in Make-Up for example. Animation is so underapreciated by the Academy. That’s why I support TS 3 for Best Picture win. The Best reviewed and most watched film of the year. Are the characters not human? Yes, but the sensibility of the man behind it is bigger than the one showed by any director or actor in a 2010 film. FYC – TOY STORY 3: BEST PICTURE OF THE YEAR

(it should go without saying that when I say “The Illusionist” is one of the best films of the year, I’m stating my opinion, obviously).

I think it’s a weak enough year for animated film that 3 nominees makes perfect sense.

Interesting. As much as I wish ‘Tangled’ would be there, I think it shouldn’t be nominated. ‘Princess and the frog’ was a so so movie, but it meant the beginning of a new effort to regenerate the studio, the hand drawing animation that now is a thing that only Japan studios own and transform in success.

‘Tangled’ was a long-time project from handdrawing animator Glen Keane. It was supposed to be the new Beaty and the Beast, the Sleeping Beauty of the new century. The new strategy of the studio and the new directors of the movie, drawn this project into a very good light comedy. Bout certainly it’s not what we all dreamed at the beginning.

‘The illusionst’ keeps all the magic with what it was conceived. It’s hand drawing animation, and most important it’s original, fresh, and it’s something classic but at the same time, new. Disney just followed the nowadays formula with Tangled. That’s why The illusionist deserves the third spot and will take it.

The dark side of this is that ‘Tangled’ is going ro be lef out and this will be hard for the studio. They couldn’t even make this thing an Oscar nominated film.

Those two movies are the ones fighting for the last spot. Forget about Megaminds, Despicables and that stuff. The Illusionist is this year’s The Secret of Kells,-Spirited Away-Persepolis thing.

Anyway, TS3 will win. No question about it.

A weak year? Totally disagree. With 2 films with more than 97% at RT (the 2 best reviewed films of the year BTW), Tangled being raved in early reviews, 3 independent films (Illusionist, Dog Tulip and Idiots and Angels) raved also and with 4 animated films making more than 200 million dollar as of now in the US

I think Tangled would get the 3rd slot.

As much as I like Zack Snyder, I’m totally rooting for The Illusionist… And I’m hoping for it to be nominated in other tech categories as well….

I agree with Loyal… And here’s hoping it won’t be nominated next year… I just don’t get why do they have to do a sequel to a movie which is not that great compared to the other Pixar masterpieces…

Maybe the more interesting subject is actually what will become of next year. Pixar has Cars 2 as their only film, while Dreamworks has Kung Fu Panda 2: The Kaboom of Doom and then there’s Happy Feet 2 as well. Neither particularly strikes me as even something that ought to be a contender to win an Oscar. Maybe that odd-looking movie with Johnny Depp will take it.. Rango? Or preferably Winnie the Pooh.

No, “The Social Network” is the best reviewed film of the year.

Wasn’t The Secret of Kells released this year? I’m confused by the Academy’s calendar. If only Tales of Earthsea was eligible. Sure, the movie wasn’t good, but it would have given us those two extra nomination slots.

No, “The Social Network” is the best reviewed film of the year.

If you consider the fresh/rotten, it’s not. Social Network is 97%; How to Train Your Dragon is 98% and Toy Story 3 is 99%.

I’m not considering it, I’m considering the more accurate Average Rating:

    “Toy Story 3” – 8.8/10
“How to Train Your Dragon” – 7.9/10
    “The Social Network” – 9/10

This is pathetic … well, to me. 16? What the shizz does that even mean? If anything (and this is still a stretch), to have 5, it should be 15, a nice round number (if they’re to have one).

That said, for this specific category, even if there were 10 available and 5 superb animated films among them, there shuld be 5 nominees, anyway.

Well, any year would be weak for animation compared to 2009. Up, Coraline, Ponyo, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, and A Town Called Panic. And I haven’t seen Mary & Max or The Princess and the Frog, but if they’re good, that would bring the total of great animated films to 8.

The trailer for the next Pixar film is out and the animation is yet-again-shockingly glorious. I seriously think if animated films can look this real (and awesome), why distinguish between them and live action at all. It most certainly is gonna be a technical marvel.

Btw the movie itself seems awful, like Shrek 4 level awful. And I’m a Piaxr fanboy and all.

Shrek 4 wasn’t awful. And Shreks 1 and 2 were superb. All things considered it was a fairly strong franchise.

Cars 2 does *look* good but there’s hardly anything there that is shocking.

Once again, if it’s eligible, The Adventures of Tintin is the likliest behemoth at next year’s animated race.
