‘True Grit’ trailer

Written by

in

Last week we got our first look at the Coen brothers’ “True Grit” via a crafty teaser trailer with no shortage of visual flourish. Friday a teaser poster hit and over the weekend a fuller version of the trailer was attached to a number of new releases. Today, via Yahoo! Movies, we get an online look…and yes, it’s AWESOME (though structured more commercially than like a Coen film). We get a good look at Matt Damon’s performance here, which I hear is a highlight of the film. Have a look at the trailer by clicking the image below or watch an embed after the jump.

This was attached to my screening of Social Network, this was fantastic…

Saddle me right the hell up for this one! Fantastic stuff.

I’m not convinced. I don’t think this is going to be the Oscar contender most think it will be. I don’t see Jeff Bridges’ performance here as something people will talk about. Hailee Steinfeld just doesn’t have the presence she should. It just looks more mainstream than most Coen brothers movies. Been there. Seen that. Next please.

No problemo, Duncan, little brother. Just you set yourself down with the womenfolk there while the real menfolk see the picture. We’ll all bring ya back a squirrel come suppertime.

This womanfolk cant wait to see the movie!

“Them boys are gonna think about the wrath that’s ’bout to set down on ’em.”

If that is indicative of the kind of dialogue the movie is going to traffic in, then I am going to be in absolute heaven come Christmas.

I’m sorry Hunter? I like “No Country For Old Men” and I wasn’t a fan of this trailer, so I’m gay? I don’t quite get the logic on that.

  9. Hunter Tremayne Avatar

Simmer down, little brother. Nobody’s disputin’ yer manhood. See, some folks jes’ don’t got the temperament fer some movies, and so they’re likely to get their fool head shot off if they get in the way. Safest place fer you is right there. Holler if ya hear a boogerman.

Duncan: You’re reacting and passing judgment on a trailer meant to sell tickets. As noted in the copy, it’s clearly built for commercial purposes. Surely you’re able to grasp that.

Also, I don’t think Hunter (in an admittedly childish comment) said anything about you being “gay.”

Dropping the amateur Cogburn impression for a moment, this looks good for a serious number of nominations. No way is Hailee Steinfeld supporting, though, Ryan. She’s in every scene and the story is told from her point of view.

  12. Hunter Tremayne Avatar

Erm, I meant Kris, of course, not Ryan.

  13. James Avatar

I could still see her positioned for a supporting nomination.

  14. Jim T Avatar

But, Kris, your reaction was also from this “trailer meant to sell tickets”. Why is it OK to get excited based on this trailer but it’s not OK to feel negatively about it?

Personally, I still (even more than before) don’t think it has anything to give me. I’ll wait for the reviews but No Country had great reviews and I didn’t really care about it so…

Well, I just try to keep an open mind for everything.

Well, the Coens have yet to create something that’s done anything short of delighting me, and considering the calibre of talent at play here, I’m am super fucking excited. And if this film isn’t anything but killer, then I’d be thoroughly surprised. And I’m usually someone who doesn’t get excited about a movie this early on.

  16. Kristopher Tapley Avatar

Hunter: Rinse repeat on that argument.

Jim: You’re bending over backwards to make an argument, but I’ll try to address it from my point of view.

Sure, I think the trailer looks awesome. I also wrote, clearly, that it is built for commercial purposes. I imagine the tone of the film will be a bit different than the one being fronted here, but I don’t have an issue with the tone here, either.

Duncan, unfortunately, doesn’t just seem to dislike the trailer and its tone, he seems to think the film will be derivative because the trailer is a commercial one. He’s dismissing it out of hand.

One of those reactions is hasty. I’ll let you decide which one.

I was sold when they said A Coen Bros. True Grit adaptation starring Jeff Bridges. This trailer is just icing on the cake.

I definitely preferred the teaser trailer. But I still think this has the potential to be great.

Holy crap. That trailer gave me goosebumps like three times over. It may not be as slick as the teaser trailer, but it actually managed to get me more jazzed up than the teaser did. Must be the more frantic pace, and the music.

Oh, and if Roger Deakins doesn’t have his Oscar by February’s end I will lose my mind. Drool.

  20. ThinWhiteDuke Avatar

Who are these people who need a good trailer in order to get excited for a Coen film and what is wrong with them?? I found this much more effective than the teaser, but i was all in regardless.

  21. M.Harris Avatar

Damn! That looks good. Don’t want to assume too much; But! It’s the Coen’s. I’ll be seeing it the first day it comes out.

I’m sorry Kris, but I don’t recall you getting so defensive about people lambasting the King’s Speech trailer. Basically everyone dismissed it out-of-hand, and many dismissed the movie itself as well, when you linked to that trailer… and there weren’t any complaints from you then.

But one person posted a relatively innocuous criticism of this True Grit trailer and you’ve already taken him to task twice. I’m pretty sure Duncan is allowed to say that he probably won’t watch the movie because the trailer failed to convince him to do so. That’s kind of the point of a trailer, isn’t it?

I didn’t know we were all supposed to start tugging our willies because it’s a western with the name “Coen” stamped on the packaging.

    Well…

Damn. I’m very excited for this now.

Roger Deakins just has to win this year. I don’t think i’ll be able to take it if he loses again. Also, movie just looks fantastic albeit a little more mainstream and usual. And i say that because even w/ the Coen brother’s other film trailers, you could tell that the film would be a very different thing from the trailer. I’m not quite getting that vibe here, but then again, I’m probably wrong. It is the Coens after all..

  25. Kristopher Tapley Avatar

SJG: He’s allowed to say anything he wants. I never said otherwise. But it’s silly to dismiss the film based on the trailer, just as it’s silly to do the same for The King’s Speech. Charming final comment, though,

Looks amazing! This has definitely shot up to the top of my must-see list.

But damn Kris, no need to belittle Duncan with condescending questions like “surely you’re able to grasp that?” just because the guy didn’t like the trailer. It’s not like he’s trolling or anything, just giving his honest reaction. Jeez.

I think this is the type of a film were in if it succeeds in the awards season, it will will succeed in a major way and vice-versa…

I like the cinematography, but I’m yet to see the other contenders.. But a nomination is probably locked?

I don’t know but I have a feeling that Matt Damon might have a shot for a supporting actor nomination… Though it seems to be a tight category though…

There will be a short interval while I note that a gritty Matt Damon astride a painted pony and brandishing a rifle and a Texas twang is nothing short of mind-blowingly hot.

We now return you to Oscar talk.

  29. Kristopher Tapley Avatar

Evan: It’s the second time in as many posts that Duncan has said that so I decided to speak up. I’m not being condescending, I’m reacting to the notion that, based on a trailer built to sell tickets, the film will somehow be too mainstream (implying, of course, poor quality). Simple as that.

I think you (and SJG) think I’m taking the comment more personally than I am, though. Just attempting to keep perspective.

  30. Silencio Avatar

The teaser was more exciting for me, probably due to the choice in music. But I’m still in line for it. I’m ready for the Coens to knock it out 4 times in a row.

This trailer has definitely peaked my interest in the film. I’m not on the verge of orgasm over it, but it does look better than I had imagined. Though, I can totally see how someone wouldn’t be excited by it. Whatever. But I’m not yet sold on Bridges as a lead actor nominee though.

Me too, Joe. I was stuck seeing trailers for some lame teenie-bopper fare and another Zach Galifianakis comedy.
