Clips from ‘Never Let Me Go,’ ‘Somewhere’

With the fall festival circuit merely hours away (Guy is already getting settling in Venice), we’ve got a pair of clips from two anticipated titles to pass along today.

First, there is Sofia Coppola’s “Somewhere,” which is exclusive to Venice and features Stephen Dorff and Elle Fanning in what isn’t likely to be an Oscar movie, but could play well to European audiences on the Lido. The clip, courtesy of Reelz Channel, features some of Dorff’s performance as an actor navigating the PR necessities of his latest film.  I cracked up when he stepped off the apple box at the end.

Meanwhile, MTV has a clip from “Never Let Me Go” that goes a long way (in just over a minute) toward indicating the thick, moody atmosphere the film will establish.  It features Keira Knightley and Carey Mulligan, though it’s more of a showcase for the former.  The film will play Toronto later this month.

Check out both clips after the jump.

I don’t get any good vibes from the NLMG trailer or clip.

    Wow.

The combination of Portman’s score and the slow tear forming in Mulligan’s eye sent a chill down my spine.

My anticipation level for NLMG has just been raised a bit more. Can’t wait. :)

Eight Oscar nominations for Never Let Me Go, including one for Andrew Garfield in a category that’s historically skewed young on a tiny handful of occasions? I could maybe see a couple of these nominations, but Director and Actress? You’re a loon. But hey, you’re one of those who latched onto Alec Baldwin in It’s Complicated with only a modicum of buzz.

It’s also silly to note the film opens at TIFF. It goes wide before the festival closes.

I didn’t even notice the apple box the first time I saw that clip. It is one of those great little Coppola touches.

Is the NLMG score meant to evoke Radiohead’s No Surprises as much as it does? Would be an awesome choice.

I feel like Knghtley is going to be a real scene stealer and get the most buzz in “Never Let Me Go”. I realize it’s not a popular position to take in some circles, but I’m a huge fan of hers. I’m probably wrong, but that’s just my gut feeling.

I’ve been excited about “Never Let Me Go” since the trailer debuted and its about time Oscar prognasticators are catching up. Though the early buzz does actually worry me alittle, hopefully it won’t get out of control. This could be Keira Knightley’s year…

Also Kris, I think its time for you to add Michael Sheen and (especially) Maria Bello to your contenders list…

Yes, I’ve been meaning to post something on that. Thanks.

I think Keira Knightley has a very juicy role with Ruth. The supporting roles (Ruth, Tommy) are much showier than Kathy in the novel so I wouldn’t be surprised if Garfield and Knightley were to get more awards love than Mulligan, especially since the supporting categories love their scene-stealers.

As an aside, I’m so happy to see NLMG added to many of the categories on the side-bar. One can only hope it is a good enough film with good enough buzz to attain those.

I completely agree on Mulligan´s less chances to be a contender for awards as Tommy and Ruth´s roles are much showier, and i would say from the clips I,ve seen Garfield is the main scene stealer in the movie.

I love the book but I dont see NLMG getting enough critical acclaim for awards and even less for Oscars. I think the buzz is not coming from the film in itself but from the book´s success instead. I wish I was wrong..
