Actress Naomi Watts is front and center as an awards prospect in Doug Liman’s “Fair Game,” and the trailer, recently launched via Yahoo! Movies, certainly conveys as much as well. At Cannes, however, the film didn’t really set things ablaze. Guy was measured in his appreciation of the film at Cannes. We’ll see what Summit can do with a campaign but for now, it’s clearly being positioned as a thriller to bring in the dollars. While I wish it had a different name – do we really need to be reminded of Claudia Schiffer? – it does look like a solid piece of adult thriller filmmaking. Alas, it reminds me of “The Interpreter” and a lot of people don’t like that one for some reason.
I don’t know, I kinda lost interest in this story once it was revealed that the leak came from outside the White House. That and apparently Plame wasn’t really the big shot spy that all of the controversy made her out to be.
meh. Seems intriguing, but I’m very skeptical of its Oscah chances
Tony, that’s… a shame. I wasn’t actually aware of much of this story. I don’t remember it being in the news much down here.
Glenn: Cindy Crawford, you mean! Give respect where it’s due.
Xavier: I don’t follow. You’re intrigued by the film, but because you don’t sense much Oscar potential, you’re “meh” all of a sudden?
Been there, done that.
My hunch is that upon release, the Watts buzz will flatline.
Yes, of course, Cindy Crawford! How could I get that SO wrong?
It looks OK, but nothing spectacular. As much as I love Watts, this just looks like a run-of-the-mill role for her. Same thing for Sean Penn. And considering the Cannes buzz wasn’t anything to get too excited about, I think it’s Oscar chances are slim to none.
I would say.. the trailer was to make the movie look interesting for the normal cine-goers .. focus was less on performances and more on the thriller feel … still I believe .. on Nov 5th when the movie finally releases .. it will come out with strong buzz for Naomi’s performance .. sth similar to Sandra’s run last year .. darling of both the masses and the critics .. even though it wasn’t an oscar worthy one !!
The film is not going to be a “darling of the masses.” Just trust me on this one. (For one thing, it’d require a pretty abrupt political about-face from many of the heartland residents that held “The Blind Side” so dear.)
I talked more about the Naomi’s performance rather than movie itself … but do you agree that it would by loved by critics ..?
Glenn…yes, it was revealed that a woman by the same of Andrea Mitchell caused the leak, not nnyone in the administration. So I’m not sure why they’re making another movie about it.
Gautam: I imagine the critical reception upon release will be much as it was at Cannes — respectful but fairly indifferent. And I don’t quite follow your point — if the performance is to be embraced by “the masses,” the film has to be too.
This doesn’t really excite me at all.
