The “Harry Potter” franchise has been a nice cash cow for Warner Bros. So it was a stroke of genius to split the final novel, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” into two film adaptations, virtually assuring an extra $800 million or so. The “Twilight” series took note, too. The all-encompassing trailer for the two-parter wizard denouement has hit the web via Yahoo! Movies and, well, they’ve always known how to cook up fetching trailers for this series. I still think its finest hour was the first 60 minutes of “The Goblet of Fire” and was generally “meh” on the third film, which is the favorite for most. So I guess I’m just out of step with the rest on these. Check out the new trailer by clicking the image below or have a look at the embed after the jump.

Eugh, I want to be excited for this movie so much, but to me the footage was dissapointing – it was mostly Part 2 stuff, and the feel of the movie isn’t even vaguely reminiscent of the first few Potters. Where is the magic?
Squeal!!
Kris, I bang on agree. The 4th film was the best (esp. that 1st hour). And I, too, was not as wild about the 3rd, as most. But I eagerly look forward to these last 2.
Hahaha, and the third as a favourite for most? Go to any fan site, and for even suggesting you liked the third, you’ll be ripped to shreds! (They’re so vicious!) I think critically the third was the most well-liked, if that’s what you meant…
I guess that is what I meant, yeah. Which is the fan fave? I guess I just assumed it would be that one, too.
Never read the books, always found the films’ respective tones bland and very unmagical. I chalk that one up to letting Chris Colombus direct the first two instead of Gilliam.
Cinematography and Art Direction look great..
Daniel Radcliffe continuing to look as wooden as a stool. I mean seriously, it was cute and all when they were little when they practically had the script in their hands, but the trio are what, 20 now?
The 3rd film, while technically superior to the previous 2, set in place a ‘tone’ that I still don’t like. And Gambon came on way too strong, for me.
The wild favorite, Kris, is “The Order of the Phoenix,” and I don’t really blame them, even if I thought “The Half-Blood Prince” was the series’ finest achievement. The films have gotten better and better, and this looks absolutely stunning. They’re certainly better than the stodgy “Twilight” series.
That’s one dull generation.
Twilight sucks!
Weird, most of the fans I know think the 3rd is by far the best (Which I agree) so I don’t where all these ripped shreds are. The 3rd one is the only once to have any sort of directorial personality. And I prefer Gambon over Harris.
Personally, my favorite is “Half-Blood Prince”, and that’s the one that will lead us into the final film. If I had to rate the films it would go like this:
6. Order of the Phoenix
5. Chamber of Secrets
4. Sorceror’s Stone
3. Goblet of Fire
2. Prisoner of Azkaban (Sorry Kris)
1. Half-Blood Prince
I have some problems with this trailer, but there mostly muted by how much I love it. I feel this will be the best yet, so I’m keeping hope alive.
***…and the feel of the movie isn’t even vaguely reminiscent of the first few Potters. Where is the magic?***
Naturally, as the subject and tone is supposed to be increasingly mature as the series goes on.
YAY! Oh gosh, call me arrogant, but I’ve always felt that this series and Toy Story were the two film series that were tailor-made not just for my generation but specifically for those born around the same time as me (late 80s). Is that a generation? I have grown up right alongside Andy, Harry, Ron, and Hermione, and I just find that incredibly cool.
Anyway, I loved the trailer. Lots of end-of-the-book stuff, though, which kinda surprised, and I always envisioned that scene at the beginning of the trailer a little more darker, like in the dead of night. In one of the earlier trailers, there was a shot of Hermione holding up her hands, which looked like they were covered in blood, and that intrigued me immensely for some reason. Here, though, in the same shot (around 1:15) it looks like her hands are clean now, so make of that what you will.
Half-Blood Prince is indeed far and away my favorite, and I was glad that it grabbed that cinematography nod. I’d have to follow that with Goblet of Fire, Prisoner of Azkaban, Sorcerer’s Stone, Order of the Phoenix, and finally Chamber of Secrets. OotP I hated when it came out in theaters but on a couple of recent rewatches has grown on me very much almost on the merit of the performances alone (Staunton, Carter, and Rickman, especially).
I’m not holding my breath for awards recognition, especially with the 2-part structure, but if these knock ’em out of the park, God if I wouldn’t love for a big sendoff.
my favorite has always been Chamber of Secrets i thought Prisoner of Azkaban was a piece of Crap
The trailer looks simply amazing. I am a little disappointed that they showed most of the second film though. The HD version is over at apple by the way.
Is anyone with me on saying that, as a massive Harry Potter fan, i think the last half hour of the fifth movie was the best. That fight in the ministry of magic was breathtaking. It encompassed, for me, everything Harry Potter should be.
I do think what Alfonso Cuarón with the 3rd movie was quite amazing in comparison to how Chris Columbus set up the first two. He completely changed the tone in his vision and it basically set up the next five films. I can tell you right now, the Harry Potter films would not nearly be as good as they are now without Alfonso.
I will definitely agree with you there, Douglas….the music, the magic, the possession, the heartbreak, the battle between the two greatest wizards of all time, all spot-on.
The fourth one (Goblet of Fire) was terrible. Truly, truly awful. I think it’s the worst of the series.
This last one was aiight. Although it did lose the balance between its storylines, it was the HP movie that cleared showed the most evolution and the effort of everyone involved was evident.
I also loved that last half-hour of the 5th movie, but I thought the dialogue between Harry and Dumbledore didn’t make any justice to the one in the book. My favorite movie of the series so far has been Prisoner of Azkaban. I have always thought that Cuarón was an amazingly inspired choice for directing Prisoner, he really took the series to another level and added a thick layer of polish and creativity not seen before. To me Goblet of Fire was good, but it lacked scope and felt very episodic.
“the only once to have any sort of directorial personality”
That’s not necessarily a good thing. And I’m not saying it’s a bad thing in this instance, just a flimsy defense.
As far as Order of the Phoenix, I feel asleep at least twice. And that never happens to me in a movie.
I have always felt that Goblet of Fire was the best of the series. it balanced the growing up aspect (romance, maturity, etc…..) and the dramatic storyline of the series quite well. I also felt that Half Blood Prince was the weakest, felt like the romance between characters was blown up too much and the climax was rushed. the big death scene felt like there was no weight to it cause the film put too much attention to the romance and the kids being teenagers. Hope that isn’t the case for the last two.
I perked up to the Harry Potter series when I saw “Order of the Phoenix”. “Half-Blood Prince” is fine, but it does feel a touch imbalanced.
Personally, I kind of hate that Warner Bros. is marketing both films at once. I also fear that Part II is going to go the route of “Return of the King”, where we get fifty mawkish endings.
Well Kris, would you like me to expand so my argument doesn’t seem so “flimsy”?
3D, seriously? As if splitting it into 2 movies wasn’t gouging enough…
***I also fear that Part II is going to go the route of “Return of the King”, where we get fifty mawkish endings.***
I think my eyes rolled out of my head.
“I think my eyes rolled out of my head.”
As in…you think my crack at “Return of the King” is unjust and/or seven years too late? Or do you agree with me? Sorry, I can’t tell…
I have been a huge Harry Potter fan since i was like 8 or 9 years old. I personally think that Order of the Phoenix was the WORST of the HP movies. Aside from Imelda Staunton’s Dolores Umbridge, that film was utterly painful to watch. The flying newspaper effect pissed the hell out of me and overall it wasn’t fun at all.
HP from worst to best:
Order of the Phoenix
Prisoner of Azkaban
Chamber of Secrets
Sorcerer’s Stone
Half-Blood Prince
Goblet of Fire (still the best)
Totally lame that there seems to be a civilized debate going on about this over-produced mass marketed fantasy franchise but if Kris were to post a Twilight trailer all he’ll would break loose. Someone want to tell me what the difference is?
“Harry Potter” is well written, thematically prevalent literature and “Twilight” is preteen girl dime store trash? Is it that hard to grasp?
And Chase, both. Seven years too late and totally wrong in the first place!
Not to talk about the movies per se, but the Harry Potter books were a genuine cross-generational publishing phenomenon, especially compared to the demographic of the Twilight readers.
I’ve grown up with the books and films, and these final two look amazing. From a technical stand point, it looks stunning. For me, “Half-Blood Prince” was great, as was “Order of the Phoenix” and “Prisoner of Azkaban”. “Goblet of Fire” was good, but the first two are awful now by comparison, though I’d still take them over any ‘Twilight’ film and day of the week. I am looking so forward to this. Cuaron did a fantastic job on “Prisoner”, helping the franchise mature in every aspect, and paving the way for the great job that David Yates has been doing. I’m so excited for these films, I’m flipping out over here, lol.
Well said Speaking English.
Yeah, sorry Chad, but the HP franchise is simply incomparable to the Twilight fandom in terms of quality and cultural impact. This vampire fad will fade, but people will be talking about the Harry Potter books for years to come (and perhaps the movies, but on much, much lesser scale). And, unbelievable as it may be, the movies have actually defied the odds by being consistently well-executed. Sure, to varying degrees of quality, but nonetheless it is one of the more handsome franchises out there.
A fight between Twilight and Harry Potter is ultimately superfluous. They all cower in the shadow of Lord of The Rings. Best fantasy novels, best fantasy films.
Never been able to figure out what’s so bad about Chamber of Secrets. Not the best film, but certainly far, far better than the first. For me, it’s a wash between Half Blood Prince and Goblet of Fire as to which is the best. I think the end of Goblet is my favorite of any of the films. I like the end of the Order too, but most of that film is just a disaster. They cut the soul out of it, and what remained felt more like a montage than an actual film. As for Prisoner, I never had much of an opinion on that one. It’s good, but I never understood why it was supposedly above the others.
So the defense is all just about the books?
Well I think because the source material is so much better it has also translated to the movies. And really, you can’t deny the pedigree, an entire cast of A-list British actors against Kristen Stewart and two shirtless guys. Yeah.
jajajajaja, Speaking Eanglish!!! I agree!!
Man, the folks at Warner Brothers always knew how to cut a good trailer.
Anyway, the last Potter film I’ve seen is Order of the Phoenix, which was a messy, artificial, soulless piece of garbage, just like every Potter film that came before it. I have no interest in seeing the last three, and I a agree with Guy: That is one dull generation.
It’s true that the target audiences of the two are demographically different, but the Harry Potter films seem to want to appeal to most of the wide audience the books have, whereas the Twilight films are focused on the books’ (pre)teen girl market, even though they clearly have a wider and older following. They evidently seek to intensify and exploit that appeal (with hot shirtless boys and longing gazes) for obvious profit, rather than exploring in any depth the thematic issues of the books. I’m not saying the Harry Potter movies always do a great job of such thematic exploration of the books, but the lengths they go to with cinematic craft (cinematography, sets, and casting at least) show a level of sincerity that is lacking, for me at least, with the Twilight films.
I’m just hoping that with two films, we get even more camping. Sad to see more of that didn’t end up in the trailer.
/sarcasm
Something about the tone in the trailer wasn’t quite what I expected, but I can’t put my finger on it. And someone mentioned Hermione having bloody hands. Are you talking about the part where Harry and Ron are on the ground behind her? I’m guessing that’s when Ron got splinched.
Oh, and that dragon looks terrible, and I have every intention of seeing this in 2D.
Chad knocking a mainstream film. What a shock. *rolls eyes*
As for me, the series peaked at Prisoner of Azkaban and has been downhill since. There was a time when I excitedly anticipated every new film in the series, but I find it hard to be for this new one, considering how majorly disappointing Half-Blood Prince. The producers were idiotic for hiring David Yates for the final film and should have brought back Alfonso Cuaron.
I’ve also considered Bryan Singer and Brad Bird as possible directors for the final entry. Unfortunately, it’s too little too late. Ah, well. They will re-adapt Harry Potter into a television series in twenty years time, anyway.
Chad’s just gearing up for his main page trouncing when the films are #1 at the box office.
Seriously, can someone else get the weekly box office blog duties? Someone who actually enjoys movies?
As for HP, there is so much missing on-screen from JK Rowling’s world that it isn’t fair to compare the books to the films. We see everything from Harry’s point of view, and no other characters, other than the Defense Against the Dark Arts teachers, receive any depth of character in the screenplay. Ron is reduced to comic relief, and Hermione is a sidekick. Maybe that will change in the final films. I think so far David Yates has been all over the place in his direction and story. The last two films aren’t bad, but they don’t seem as balanced in terms of plot elements, humor, suspense and artistry as Cuaron and Newell’s entries.
So far for me, I would rank them:
1. Prisoner of Azkaban
2. Goblet of Fire
3. Order of the Phoenix
4. Half-Blood Prince
5. Sorcerer’s Stone
6. Chamber of Secrets
Yeah, I have never understood how adults could enjoy these sorts of things. I guess I don’t enjoy movies either.
I grew up with them too and I would say I’m fairly the audience for the movies but the entire film series is just disposable. A curiosity of our time, flavor of the generation without any value or merit.
The best things I can say about these films is that they certainly spend a truck-load of money on it. And I have really out-grown the books as well. I really liked them at one point but I doubt I would even have considered reading them now.
I’ll perhaps end up seeing this, but being in two parts has dulled my interestalmost completely, who wants to see two movies?
The only difference between twilight and harry potter is that these films are more sophiticatedly made and not so gender specific in their appeal. Besides that I cannot compare the quality having never seen or read any of the twilight movies/books. But my females friends assure me they are the most horrid things in the world.
I have read books no4,5,6 and 7 and I liked them a lot. I think the movies are mediocre (I haven’t seen half-blood prince).
I am kind of OK with the 3D thing because the movies are much shallower than the books so they might as well go all the “silly epic fun” way.
I can’t even remember what happened the film before the new one. Let alone the rest of the franchise/arc. The trailer looks pretty standard and I still cannot get used to those absolutely silly magic wands. I can’t wait for Hustler to produce “This Is Not Harry Potter XXX” and put those wands to some real magical use.
Looks nice and epic which is what the last book was, more so then the rest. Could live without the 3d thing being everywhere though
So adults shouldn’t be entertained by childrens’ movies. Got it.
