The teaser for David Fincher’s upcoming “The Social Network” hit the net at Mashable yesterday. If you’re somehow unaware, it’s a biopic (weird to say that, no?) on Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg from a script by Aaron Sorkin, based on Ben Mezrich’s novel “The Accidental Billionaires.” There is no footage, just a lofty tease that gives the impression the film will be, shall we say, quite sincere. It’s left to be seen how Columbia flacks and the 42 West component behind producer Scott Rudin (as always) will coalesce during the season, but it’s certainly a sight-unseen favorite for the race. Good teaser. I like the dialogue and the ominous tone. Looking forward to it.
Color me friggin’ excited.
What makes a Fincher film about some Facebook guy an awards contender?
I love Andrew Garfield.
I know it’s way early as far as this film goes, but Justin Timberlake’s line makes his feel like a performance to watch. And I’m really excited to see Eisenberg leave the Diet Michael Cera schtick behind.
Gustavo: The script is top notch.
By the way, something that’s been irritating me: I’m tired of people acting like Eisenberg stole Cera’s “schtick.” It goes without saying the whole disposition is totally played out, but it was fresh when Eisenberg did it FIRST back in 2002 in “Roger Dodger.”
Fair point. I guess what I really mean is it’s good to see him play a character outside of that sphere.
Zach, I agree with you . I am very curious to see the performances of Timberlake & Eisenberg . It is great to view a trailer that has a “less is more ” approach – and also places a heavy emphasis on the film dialogue. It will be refreshing to see a mainstream movie starring 20 -something actors that is not a action film, scifi- film or comic book movie – a dramatic movie that is plot & dialogue driven. I’m wishing for enormous box office success- we need more quality dramas. Kudos to David Fincher for taking risks !!
Both Jesse Eisenberg & Anne Hathaway got their start on a canceled tv program “Get Real” – they played siblings . I would love to see these two star in an indie drama.
tiff: Eisenberg and Hathaway will be starring (or shall I say voice-starring) in an animated movie together called “Rio,” to come out in 2011.
I’m wondering if the tone of this trailer will actually be the tone of the film. Very interesting. I think Fincher can be one of the best modern directors working today depending on the material, and I’m really curious about this.
Interesting, I didn’t know that Kris, I had always assumed that since Cera became more or less the bigger star that he initiated that schtick. I was surprised to look up just now that Cera and I are the same age and that Eisenberg is quite a big older.
That said, count me as well among those anxious about Timberlake’s role. If it’s baity enough, and if the film is respected enough (and it does look like Fincher finally is in the good graces of the Academy), then we might see some awards action for him. Then he’d be 3/4 of the way to EGOT!
Is this a legal drama?
Great to see Eisenburg get some meaty leading man roles. There’s definitely a darker edge to this performance.
